Thread: What makes a promotion worthwhile to you

  1. #1
Instead of insults and such about "real money", what makes a promo or type of valuable play worth it for you to play or not to play? I'm the kind of guy that if it's quick, easily accessible, and profitable, no matter the amount, I'll play it. If it'll take many hours, a long distance away or require a team, such as progressives, I'm not interested.

You said it: is it profitable. Profitability also includes time and costs as well as the profitability of the actual offer. Are you spending $20 in gas for $40 of free play? Are you spending an hour for $20 of free play? Then consider the chance of converting that free play to actual cash. There are other costs to consider as well including what else could you have done with that time and with the money that goes toward expenses in taking advantage of the offer.

Unless it's an astounding amount of free play such as I received from the Palms, or I'm going to be close by anyway, I'm not the type to be reeled in by any promotion. It's a casino tool, and everyone knows my position on those.

That's where discipline comes in. I have no problem taking free money and walking out giving no other play what so ever. And obviously, as Alan alluded to, it has to be worth my while.

If you can do that then you're in a very select group. But you have to draw the line at going to a bank to get $400 in coin just for $40 in free play. It just isn't worth it, even if it were $40 in cash.

  6. #6
I would disagree Rob. If $40 in cash I'd be first in line for the bank to open.

  7. #7
That to me depends on the type of player you are. Are you someone who could just walk after getting the 40 bucks, or are you someone who never saw a vp machine they wouldn't play? And it also depends on what your spare time is worth to you, and if you value your dignity, even in front of the jagoff crowd who frequents Ellis Island. The place belongs in Montana.

I simply wouldn't do it, and would instead set my win goal $40 higher on my next session if it bothered me to any extent.

Rob not only would I walk... but I would recruit everyone in a five block area to do the same thing. I would give them the $400 and split the profit 50/50.

Years ago I had a $100 cash offer at State Line Primm. No play required. Just show up and get $100 cash at the cage. I drove by the casino on my way to Vegas, left my girlfriend in the car at the front entrance and got the cash, ran out and drove away.

OK, I know I'm a penny ante player compared to you guys, but here's how I do it-- and sometimes I win $80-$100. The el cheapo Caeser's promos give me tiny offers every day of the week-which I trash. BUT one day a week I get a combo offer that's $35-$40 and I take my free buffet offer, play the free play with my modified artt strategy, and then my wife and I enjoy the buffet. So I guess what would make my offer worthwhile would be to get rid of the chinchy, low class daily offers and combine it into a day of your choice. I know why they do it, but it's low class, in my opinion.

Sling nothing wrong with that advantage play. But after I did that for a couple months of using only free play because I made Seven Stars they killed my free play. And that's why I'll never go back there.

Alan, it looks like I spoke too soon. I just opened my February offers and they CHANGED my buffet offers to a different day- where I only get $10 free play. I DO get a buffet for two each week, but I can see what's really important to them. You would think after being a patron for over 10 years- ......

All things must be considered when determining if a promotion is worthwhile -- at the top is -- how much can I expect to make, taking into account variance. For instance, if I calculate my EV being $13k, figure it'll cost me $2K to do it [hit no RF's or SF's], figure out how much work I gotta do [is it a one time thing, or do I gotta return once a week], and figure out to the best of my ability the chance I won't get paid. That's a much better situation, than say, giving up $5K in EV up front then getting $10K back down the road (for a net profit of $5K).

One has to have the requisite skills to determine if a promotion is lucrative or not. Since you don't have those skills I think you have made a wise decision by staying away from promotions.

RS__ with the exception of Rob who gets mega offers I think most of us are getting offers in the $30-$300 range. You talked about thousands of dollars. Could you revise it to talk about a couple of Andrew Jacksons?

Imagine a casino with this promotion:

If you lose $20 or more, you get to spin a wheel. There are 10 prizes, 5 are for $20 in FP, 4 are $30 in FP, and 1 is $100 in FP. The value of a spin is $32 (less the $20 loss to get the spin). Could be treated as a loss rebate (play till you lose $20, then you'll get reimbursed [an expected] $32...or until you're up some amount [like $15-20]). Pretty good promotion, an easy $10-15 in value when played -- either you win $15 when playing, or you win [an expected] $12 for a wheel spin. Tough to lose on that one [and when you do, it's a small amount].

Now imagine a scenario where if you lose $40, you get to spin a wheel, with 100 'prizes', 99 are losers (you get $0), but there is 1 winner for $5200. On top of that, perhaps the casino is crooked -- and if you win the $5200 prize, they'll make something up like, "The wheel's gotta spin at least 3 times around for it to be valid...spin again." Your expected value is $52 for the wheel spin, less the $40 loss, for a $12 in EV when you lose the $40.

Both promos are very similar, you expect to make about $10-15. But the first one is much closer to a guarantee win, while the second is much more volatile and you end up losing much more often, especially if they welsh on money you should be getting back.

Has nothing to do with any sort of skills mickey. It has everything to do with being unable to play where you want, when you want, and how you want. People that chase promos are simple gambling addicts who are pawns of the casinos. AP's like to claim casino managers are stupid and don't know what they're doing when all these "lucrative" sounding "+EV" promos pop up all the time, but the truth is they're constantly trying to rope in as many of the so-called advantage players as they possibly can, because they are the ones who will bring in as much cash as possible from any means possible and play for as long as possible.

Alan you can stop with the envy over my Palms offer. They tried to rope me in to play hi-limits and then to return to do the same, and they failed. And the only reason I got the offer was because I was a big player there in the past who hasn't been in for several years, and I was a Legend card holder as well.

RS__ I've never seen a spin the wheel offer like that. How about sticking to the conventional free play?

"CASH YOUR PAYCHECK HERE AND RECEIVE A 125 COIN BONUS ON YOUR NEXT 4 OF A KIND."

On 9/6 Jacks you have 5.4% the best of it.

Just for the record, this doesn't have to be just about VP.
