Thread: Review of Guy Fieri's El Burro Borracho restaurant -- now in Laughlin, soon coming to Rio Las Vegas

  1. #1
While in Laughlin, I decided to try Guy Fieri's new El Burro Borracho restaurant.

    It was hit and miss.

Here's the menu: https://www.caesars.com/content/dam/...racho-menu.pdf (may load slowly because of Caesars' failsite)

    The good:

I ordered a carne asada taco plate, which came with 3 beef soft tacos, beans, and rice. I substituted the usual toppings (onions and something else) with cheddar cheese. They were pretty good. Beans were pretty good, too. Plate was $16.

I also ordered a chicken tortilla soup. It tasted good, but it had way too much cabbage in it. I've never even heard of cabbage being in tortilla soup, but this had so much that it felt like I was chewing cabbage with every bite, and I don't like cabbage at all. I then gave the soup to my girlfriend, who liked it a lot and finished it all. But I'd still rate the soup as good, as it was more my personal taste of not liking the cabbage.

    The bad:

Before they seat you, they lead you up to the wall of crap associated with Guy Fieri (souvenirs, sauces, etc), and tell you that you can buy them at any time. Tacky.

Adding to the "tacky" theme, you have to walk up the check yourself and pay at the register, even though it's otherwise a full service restaurant. Even worse, they decided to let some old people who were buying 7 jars of sauce on a comp cut in front of me, and I had to stand there and wait for a few minutes while they wrapped them all.

My girlfriend got the Acapulco Gold Salad with chicken ($14), and didn't like the chicken in it. I tasted it and agreed. Seemed like some chopped-and-formed, frozen-and-warmed-up crap.

Overall, it was fine for Laughlin (where food isn't exactly known to be gourmet), but I don't think it will go over very well in Vegas, even at the Rio.

    Dan,

I know nothing about dining in general, but thought I'd ask. Some pretty decent Mexican restaurants I've eaten in have also had you walk up the check. Is it relatively common for that type of restaurant or not really?

What changes would you make in bringing that restaurant to the Rio as opposed to Laughlin? Menu, design, any thoughts as to what might make it work better in the Rio? I always wonder about this since I found out a few years back that the average Laughlin visitor had a bigger per day gambling budget than the average Las Vegas visitor. I perceive Las Vegas as more culturally polished or higher end or something, but maybe I'm just dead wrong.

Even though some restaurants do have you walk the check up, they are typically coffee shop types.

This place is supposed to be better than that.

And they should definitely kill off the "walk the diner by the gift stuff and tell him he can buy it" routine at the beginning.

    Dan,

What a coincidence, I was at El Burro Borracho last night also. It was my fifth time eating there so I guess I like it. My mother-in-law raves about the tortilla soup but I haven't tried it yet. I like the enchiladas there and the margaritas are good. I agree about having to go to a cashier to pay. It seems tacky. I've never had the gift shop routine at the beginning.

These celebrity chefs are all adding gift shops now to their restaurants. Gordon Ramsay has one at Steak in Paris BUT I think it is very unusual that you are walked by it on your way to your table. But these days NOTHING surprises me.

Mexican food is supposed to be cheap. Those prices seem ridiculous. Frickin beans!
Take off that stupid mask you big baby.

Anyone tried Taco El Gordo on the strip just north of desert inn rd? I have always wanted to try it but never made it there yet.

I wouldn't eat at any Guy Fieri restaurant. As a chef, he makes a great entertainer. But all his food is gimmicky shtick with no real culinary substance.

Laughing has some excellent dining venues as good as in LV if you know where to go. Having a so-so experience at a Mexican restaurant of all places shouldn't be a barometer for an overall comparison.

I'm assuming that place is in Harrahs because that's the only casino chain most of you guys go to. Harrahs has always had one of the worst selection of dining choices on the river.

I went to Harrah's because that's where I had my freeplay and free food credits.

Speaking of the river, do Seven Stars get the water taxi for free?
