Thread: Harrahs New Orleans

  1. #1
I know some of you have been to Harrahs New Orleans. I have to be down there on business and was wondering, location wise, is it convenient to the French Quarter/Bourbon Street.

Can I walk there? If you can walk it, is it safe?

If it is not convenient can you suggest somewhere else to stay.

I don't know the geography--I have never been there. But it appears they will give me a free room at Harrahs. Is the hotel pretty nice? I won't be gambling (well---maybe a little at night) but that is not my purpose for being there.

Do you need a car down there or can you get around without/

It takes less than 15 minutes to walk from Harrah's to Bourbon St. From the hotel/casino if you stay on Canal St. until you see Bourbon St. Take right. Bars and restaurants all up and down Bourbon St. Highly recommend the dueling pianos at Pat O'Briens if they are still doing that. As long as you stay within the tourist district and watch whats going on around you you should be okay.

I agree with Seemoreroyals that Harrah's is very convenient and safe access to the French Quarter. I love staying there. It has the subsidiary benefit of not being in the French Quarter itself as I do not want to be surrounded by partying 20 somethings 24/7 when I am on vacation.

Harrah's is a very nice, albeit small, hotel and you can use an underground entrance to get to the casino across the street. Just know that when it is busy, sometimes people are put into an overflow hotel by CET such as the Hilton Riverside, which is nice too. So make sure you are staying where you expect. Also at the Harrah's Hotel, get a high floor if you can otherwise you may be facing a parking garage instead of the Mississippi River.

We never get a car there and traffic in the French Quarter can be a nightmare. If you can get a CET limo from the airport you will save a lot of money over a cab. I recall the taxi fare from the airport was pretty stiff. Walk to the WWII Museum -- you won't regret it.

Regnis isn't asking about pianos, the view, or the traffic jams. He was simply wondering whether it was within reason to walk to the French Quarter/Bourbon St., and if the hotel is decent. The answers are, yes the hotel is reasonably nice, and no, you do not want to walk from Harrahs to Bourbon St. New Orleans is rife with murder, robberies, and other crimes against tourists and business people, and they know who's walking from point A to point B in that slummy city. Just spring for the cab fare and not be a cheapskate who ended up making the wrong decision. How come you people who've been there aren't telling him this?

Thanks for the responses. It sounds like this is a reasonable alternative to paying for a hotel room elsewhere in the city.

Rob--you are correct that my primary concern is convenience and safety, but any other info or tips is appreciated as I have never been to NOLA.

I now have differing opinions on whether it is a safe walk. I am a walker--i walk in places that i probably shouldn't, and have paid the price for that on occasion, even right here in my own town where I know all the areas. But I hate driving or taking cabs or other public transport if I can avoid it. It has nothing to do with being cheap about a cab. I just prefer to walk. But I am not going to be stupid if it is unsafe.

Regnis, wife and I are walkers as well and it is only about 15 minutes to get to corner of Canal and Bourbon St. It is not safe anywhere anymore so unless you want to spend the rest of your life staying home or constantly looking over your shoulder I would encourage you to walk. Just use common sense and you will be okay. If you go out of your way and are rude to people like Mr. Singer is on this forum, then you may have problems. Otherwise you are in for a safe and enjoyable walk.

I recall a study back in the 1970s about people who walk. Muggers target people who walk certain ways, the study found. If you walk at a good pace with your head up as if you know where you are going and determination to get there, muggers will steer clear of you. But if you walk at a casual pace, with your head down, or looking as if you are trying to find your destination or direction, muggers will target you. This was long before YouTube, so I couldn't find the report that the TV stations in NYC did about it.

There are dozens if not hundreds of folks walking up and down both sides of Canal St at any given time, from first thing in the morning until well past dark.

Unless you are stumbling back to the hotel very late at night, you'll be walking among many others and completely safe.

If you don't feel like walking, there should be several pedi-cabs lined up right outside the Canal St entrance/exit of the casino...they will take you right to Bourbon St or anywhere in the French Quarter that you want to go...the fee is negotiable.

Thanks coach. I have a scar over my right eye that reminds me to not take chances anymore. I am not a big guy or a particularly tough guy but I guess I'm too stubborn (dumb?) to just hand over my cash when challenged.

I have walked from Harrah's NO to the French Quarter many times. I didn't feel unsafe.

Harrah's NO is a nice property. Definitely the best of the Harrah's brand.

Anyone here ever get the "I bet you $5 I can tell you where you got 'dem shoes!" hustle while walking the streets of NOLA?

    ---

Whenever I stay at Harrah's NOLA, I always get a direct view of that abandoned World Trade Center building by the aquarium. Anyone find that empty building creepy as hell?

I have gotten that before on more than one occasion. I just keep going and ignore them. Eventually they find an easier target. The answer of course is you got them on your feet.

Unrelated to Harrah's or New Orleans, but I had a pretty unnerving experience walking around in downtown Atlanta at 2am.

Lots of guys kept approaching me to do "favors" such as give me directions, help me carry things, etc. If I would turn them down, they would keep walking with me and make needless conversation, and then again try to push to "help" again. Obviously the angle here was to expect a tip for the "help" they were giving.

Others would just give me looks like they were closely checking me out.

I just kept firm and repeating I didn't need any help. I looked everyone in the eye, tried not to act nervous, and in fact purposely let some of my annoyance slip through (so that was the vibe they got, rather than scared).

Eventually I got to the back entrance of my hotel, which they tried to lie and tell me was "locked" (in reality you just needed your key card), and I walked in and got rid of them.

    Wouldn't do again.

Walking around during the daytime seemed safe, though.

Re-visiting this thread. Still not sure if I need a car or not. To and from airport and to and from the racetrack for sure. That may exceed the cost of a car rental. But if I don't otherwise need a car, then I assume cabs are ok and can avoid the hassle of a car. Does anyone know if Harrahs NOLA charges for parking (either valet or general) for Diamond? Can't tell from their website.

Otherwise I assume any restaurants (I am a foodie) or other entertainment is walkable or a short cab. Any help appreciated.

Parking is free at NOLA for Diamond and above. Unless it has changed. And you know how CET is they are constantly making changes. You may want to call and ask just to make sure.

  17. #17
I did call there. Spoke to 3 people none of whom knew the answer.

My reservation confirmation on total rewards says that parking is $25 per.

Typical of CET. Disappointing but typical how nobody that works there can give you an answer to a simple question. We haven't been to NOLA in a couple of years mainly because we haven't won their the last few times and they are stingy with their offers and comps. We are planning a trip there towards the end of January and about 3 days ago my wife left a message for her host there to make arrangements and to try to work them for some extra travel reimbursement and additional free play because what they are offering is not much. If the host calls back or if I hear anything definite about free parking for diamond card holders and above I will report back.

I was just there in mid-September and valet parking was complimentary for Seven Stars. I'm not sure if it's the same for Diamond players. Also, you could also get free parking for 30 minutes of play.

Just heard back from wife"s host and it was confirmed that parking at Harrah's NOLA is free for both diamonds and 7 stars cardholders.
