Thread: Harrahs New Orleans

    Thanks guys.

So in your experience in NOLA, is it stupid to have a car? Is most of the entertainment, food, etc walkable or short cab?

I would use the car to and from airport and to and from race track. Otherwise, the car would probably just sit there.

I guess it would depend on how many trips you are taking to the race track.

A cab ride to/from the airport is $33 plus tip.

Not sure about cab fare to the racetrack.

If you can get a good rate, a car rental could be a good value.

A car also gives you the option to do some sight-seeing at little extra expense.

    Hi Regnis:

I stayed at Harrah's New Orleans and walked many times to the nearby French Quarter. I never rented a car. There were always a lot of people walking that route including tourists and I felt safe. The problem with a car is the awful traffic in the French Quarter as many streets, especially Bourbon St. are blocked off. Parking is expensive, impossible to find on the streets, in addition to the gridlock at night. Finally, if you plan on drinking, including the free drinks at Harrah's Diamond Lounge (food cooked to order also available at the DL, called the Palm Room), take that into account as well in considering whether to rent a car.

Thanks coach--1 time back and forth to track. Mapquest says 15 minute drive.

I agree with FAB unless you plan on going to Biloxi. You may look at UBER back and forth from airport and racetrack as well. Everything else is right there within walking distance assuming you like to walk.

Thanks all. Looks like I'll skip the car. We are walkers so it really would have been just airport and track I guess.

One other thing my wife found out from her host. She was told that by the time we get there, end of January, they would have the Terrace part of the casino open. Since NOLA Harrah's is now smoke free, it will provide a place outside with slots for people that smoke. We don't smoke so it has little interest to us but I know a lot of people do. Other than that I have no idea how many slots, or if there will be any VP or table games but it will be a nice option for smokers.

Returned from Harrahs NOLA. Here is a brief summary:

    1. Hotel is very nice and very clean. Staff friendly. Good water pressure in shower. Only problem was first day we had no wash cloths. Second day, we came up to room as maid was leaving and she made a point to tell us wash cloths were being washed and she had ordered some up to our room. Of course, we never got them. Third day mid afternoon I went up to the room to shower---no bath towels. Called housekeeping and they said they would send some up. Saw a maid's cart down the hall and went and asked her for 4. She said she could only give me 3. OK--then 3 more were delivered.

    2. Casino was pretty busy on the weekend but only moderately busy on the week days. I spent very little time in the casino anyway as this was not a gambling trip. Saturday they had 6 or 7 craps games going. 10 times odds and all-small-tall. Very low level players but polite and mindful of the game and the courtesies, but I got a lot of comments and looks when I took my marker. Most of the action was penny action in the middle and on the SAT. None ever hit. I played craps only twice for about 2 hours both times. Small loss both times as there were no good rolls but few shitty rolls.

    3. Played very little VP---maybe an hour total. There was little VP overall, and very little dollar VP. The one section for VP that I found was mostly nickle - quarter. The high limit was mostly $5.00 and up, with just a few dollar games. I apologize but I didn't even pay any attention to the pay tables as my play was so minimal.

    4. After considering many of the comments above in this thread, I was not going to have a car. But then a meeting was set at a location where I would need a car. So I did rent a car. Went from airport to race track to hotel and never used it again until I returned to the airport. They sent a car to pick me up for the meeting. Valet was free for diamond.

    5. We walked everywhere, whether it was in the french quarter, the garden district, Magazine Street, Frenchman's Street, etc. We never felt any concern, even at night, and any one approaching us was just a beggar, not a threat. We felt safer during busy times than less busy times where, during week days, it was pretty quiet and desolate.

    6. FOOD!!!!!! Just outstanding. If you are a foodie or just like good food, you can go wild here. We love oysters. In Chicago, we pay $3-$5 per oyster raw, and more for cooked. Here they were as low as 50-75 cents each for happy hour, and maybe $1.25 at most during regular hours. We hit a lot of non-tourist places. One big disappointment was a yelp and food blog hot spot that sucked (Casamentos).

    7. We lucked into record high temps in the 80's. The locals were complaining about it being too hot, but we laughed as in Chicago we missed a snow storm and temps in single digits--which I am sitting in right now and wondering why my parents settled here.

Thank you for taking the time to post such a nice summary.
I would go back to NOLA just to eat. The oysters are not just reasonably priced they were outstandingly good.
The paytables on the VP in the HL room, I have read, are supposed to be some of the best available in CET. Or were when I went there around a year or so ago. Unfortunately I never got to check them out myself as all of them - they only had 4 when I was there - were always occupied whenever I had casino time during my trip.

Did you have to apply for a line of credit separately at Harrah's N O for the marker?

  11. #31
Hey Coach. Since I will be in Vegas for the NHC next month, I had to call to re-open my line of credit for that upcoming trip since I haven't used it in a year. So I asked the credit rep about NOLA and she said she would take care of it. It is a separate line of credit--you need a separate line even for the various Caesars casinos in las vegas. But she kind of short cutted the application process for me.

    Hi Regnis:

I am glad you had a good time. When I was in Harrah's New Orleans last October, I found that almost all the craps tables had the STA bonus bet, but one had the Fire Bet, go figure. You had the same attitude I had which is New Orleans has so many unique things to offer, why spend too much time gambling? I leave heavy duty gambling to other casino areas. I typically use my Annual Seven Stars Retreat airfare to visit New Orleans. I loved the WWII museum which is walking distance from the Harrah's. Did you visit the Diamond Lounge? I liked the atmosphere and cooked to order food there but can get crowded so you have to wait for a seat.

Glad to hear you enjoyed NOLA and caught a break in the weather. We are going the end of next month and I am hoping the weather cooperates for us as well.

Thank you very much regnis for the details. Very informative. We're heading there on Dec 24 for 3 nights on our 7* annual trip. It will be our first time to NOLA. Really appreciate the info..

  15. #35
FAB--Exactly---didn't want to waste the great weather and all the other entertainment opportunities in the casino. I only went to the Diamond Lounge one time but it was closed. Hours were 4-10---I went there around 3.

SEEMORE--hope you get anything close to the great weather we had, although we did get big rain one night. Even then, we just kept walking and got soaked. I still wouldn't get a cab.

Kd--was my first time too and loved it. I would offer you some food recs if you like but it is hard to go wrong with a little research of your own.

One odd thing I just remembered about the craps tables. Whether they had 5 or 6 tables going or only 2 or 3, one of them was always a "crapsless" game, where if you rolled craps on the come out it was your point. Also, the boxes for place bets (usually 4,5,6,8,9,10) had 2-12 (not 7) so you could place those numbers as well. I am not sure if my memory is correct but I think the payoff for 2 or 12 was 11-2 and 3 or 11 was 11-4. But again, not sure my memory is correct as I really just glanced at it.

The crapsless game was always the most popular and crowded. I did not try it.

Thanks for a great report regnis.

I have never heard of a Caesars casino mixing games in its craps pit. I think it's unusual they would mix Fire and Bonus in the same casino and also have a single table for crapless-craps.

I am wondering if they were "testing" crapless craps at NOLA.

It is possible that they paid for licensing on the Fire layouts and are keeping them until the licenses run out. But to be honest, it would be nice if there was a choice since different players have different tastes.

Regarding markers: yes if you have a marker at one Caesars casino you can transfer it to another casino. My original credit line was at Caesars but when my host moved to the Rio my credit line was moved to Rio. Then when the host left Rio and went to work for MGM, I returned to Caesars and had my credit line transferred over.

However, the credit line transfers are only available at Caesars-owned casinos. I could not, for example, transfer my Caesars Palace credit line to Rincon which is owned by the Rincon Band of Indians and managed by Caesars.

Regarding markers: We have to get set up at every different CET location we visit. Any time we visit a property for the first time we had to set up a line of credit. Or if we have not visited a property in over 2 years we have to reestablish a line of credit. We have not been to NOLA in just over 2 years so we are going to have to give them our banking info so they can verify availability of funds. You would think once they check you out they would offer a company wide line of credit.

Alan what do you mean transferable? We have lines of credit at Paris, Bally's and at Caesars. On our next Vegas trip in March we are going to stay at Harrahs for the first time. I am wondering if we can transfer a line of credit from one of the other places we already have set up in Vegas rather than set up another one.

  19. #39
Ditto to what seemore said. I have always had to have a separate line at Caesars, Ballys, and Flamingo, etc., although my Ballys line was good at Paris. I don't think the lines were transferred over because I do get a separate statement from each casino. In reality, I can really go wild and blow my life savings as I can max out my line at each casino--it is not one combined total.

Would you typically do this in person at the casino, or maybe by phone or even online before the trip?
