If you're driving from southern California, your usual route through Minden/Gardnerville will not work, due to the road closure. The road will be closed for most of January.

The best alternate route is to take US-89 West from US-395 shortly before the Nevada border.

They somehow got it open after 3 days, but the repairs failed and it's closed again: http://www.tahoedailytribune.com/new...carson-valley/

Here is a map of Nevada roads. The purple means chains required (except 4-wheel drive with snow tire), and the red means closed:

    Kingsbury Grade remains closed.

SR-89 in California, which can be taken west from US-395, is NOT an alternate route. It is always closed for the winter.

There are only 2 ways into Tahoe now from southern/central California.

You can go through Sacramento, by traveling north on I-5 and then east on US-50 through Cameron Park/Placerville/Pollock Pines.

You can also go through Carson City, by traveling north on US-395, then going west on US-50, and following it south along the lake until you get to South Lake Tahoe.

The Sacramento way is faster/safer, but adds 32 miles over the closed route.

The Carson City way adds 16 miles over the closed route, so it's shorter, but overall will probably take longer.

89/88 through Carson Pass into Jackson is one of the most scenic routes I can think of. We try to go that way at least a couple of times a years, especially if 50 is backed up. 50 is a mess on a three day weekend during Spring and Summer, one lane road for the most part with passing lanes here and there. Between the trucks and RV's, 88/89 is a breeze.

If you are feeling adventurous, you can jump off at Sly Park Road in Pollack Pines and take the Mormon Immigrant Trail (also closed in Winters) that also intersects HW 88. It is an alternate route for HW 50.

Back open for now... but you pretty much can't drive anywhere in/around Tahoe right now without chains:
