Thread: Resort fees, convenience fees, ATM fees, Debit Card fees, Fees and Fees.

I heard today that Bank of America now wants to charge a $5 monthly fee when you make a purchase with your debit card. That's the newest fee in the world of fees.

Some casino resorts in Vegas have added "resort fees" which are supposed to be for the pool and common areas.

There are "convenience fees" when you buy tickets online-- those fees support the website that acts as the broker for the show or stadium.

There are ATM use fees when you use an ATM that doesn't belong to your bank and that's probably meant to penalize you for being some other bank's customer.

And don't you just love the fee that airline's charge for meals or for even bringing checking a bag?

What's with all the fees anyway?

Well, if you ask me the fees are a way to make up for the low "basic price." Airlines don't want to raise the cost of a ticket for a seat so they charge you separately for the meal that used to be free, or for checking a bag (I remember when you could check two for free).

Hotels charge you a "resort fee" so they don't have to raise the price of the hotel room.

In a way this is all like bait and switch advertising. Hey, Mr. and Mrs. Consumer, we'll let you stay in our hotel for $29 tonight but we have to charge you $10 for the facilities, $5 for having a phone in your room, $3 for the electricity you are going to use, and...

And the banks! I remember when they wanted everyone to start using ATMs because an ATM transaction was cheaper than a teller transaction -- and now they are charging us for the ATMs.

And those debit cards were supposed to save the banks money because they wouldn't have to process paper checks. What happened with that?

Isn't it just bait and switch?
