Thread: Do you pick up a die that goes off the table?

Question: do you pick up a die or dice when one or both bounces off the table?

    Your reason?

I do-unless the dealers or suits are being unfriendly or in some way annoying me. I also have stood on one die that went overboard for at least an hour so that I could take that die home and have it tested. I eventually bent down to tie my shoe and pocketed it.

I pick up a die or dice if they are off the table closest to me. I don't chase after them or crawl under tables to retrieve though.

My reasoning, i guess, is to help the boxman so he or she doesn't have to get up and walk around the table. Keep the pace of play up, especially if the shooter is hot, get the dice back in the shooters hand. Lastly, i am not a lazy person. Some people have a disdain for bending over to pick something up, i don't mind.

I usually play at the ends of the table, so yes, I've even gotten down on the floor to look for a die that might have gone under a blackjack table next door. Reasons? They're going to stop the game for a few minutes if the shooter called "same dice" while they look for it. Also, I guess I'm just trying to be helpful to the table.

I pick up the dice to move the game along. The only time I would not do so is if the table is crowded and felt more comfortable watching the chips on my rack.

    That's how I feel.

Any interesting results after your test on that die?

To my dismay it was perfect.

The WOV dice conspiracy advocates will tell you that you tested ONLY one die.

Of course. It's the only exercise I get at a craps table!

No I don't. I'm not paid to work there. I don't take security related risks that are senseless. I do realize that it would be courteous to do so, but I keep my eyes on my bets and the chip rail. If the floor has to come around the table and retrieve it, well, that is what he is paid to do. I don't want to cause any confusion with an ongoing roll or to hand the die to the stick or do anything else that would cause surveilance to become interested in me.

FleaStiff thanks for joining. I can't argue the security point. You are responsible to watch your chips on the layout and in your rail.

This is a silly thread. Anybody who stoops down inside any casino to pick up errant dice from the floor might as well wear a big neon sign on their back that says "I AM A LOSER!" That's something you only do for somebody you're visiting who has a craps table inside their home, or at a charity "casino night" event at churches, etc.

What's next for you people--diving onto the floor to pick up mishandled cards by the blackjack dealer?

No. Players don't pick up cards mishandled by dealers.

Please don't get me wrong. I'm not paranoid or something. I'm relatively certain no one is going to try anything funny when its "too tall to call" time. I also am probably not playing in some 'stree people' type joint wherein everyone knows each other from the house of detention. Its just that there are certain things that take priority and I think keeping an eye on my chips is one of the priorities.

I once had a dealer mis-position my come bet. He had turned his head and saw the cheques in the come area but hadn't seen which arm put them there and erroneously assumed it was the player next to me who had been making a few come bets in previous rolls. The game progressed and shortly the dealer paid off that come bet by positioning the chips in front of the person to my left. That player immediately picked up the stack of cheques and moved them a foot to the right on the layout. Each of the players knew what had happened, the crew were ignorant. So if that is what happens when a dealer is distracted momentarily, why on earth should I be complacent when the whole table is distracted by an errant die? I watch my bets and the cheques I have in the rail. If a girl in short shorts bends over to pick up the errant die, well that's life. I'll still watch the layout, not the distractions.

Do I suggest others adopt my somewhat extreme stance? No, not at all. Some enjoy the 'scenery' or the break in the routine. Its a festive time, its supposed to be fun. It generally remains a safe place, but I try to avoid getting unnecessarily distracted.

I've been 'taxed' by a few dealers and I have had a few 'rail incidents', I don't want any more than those few, so I choose to be a bit rude to the crew when a die goes overboard near me. I'm not proud of my choice, but I'm not ashamed of it either. As they say 'your mileage may vary'.
