Thread: Harrah's Laughlin

  1. #1
Can some give me some information on this location? I received a TR offer for a comp flight from New York to Laughlin on what the e-mail seems to show as a TR jet and a week's comped stay for June for two. A few months ago, they were charging $140 per person for the flight, now it's comped. I'm only a Platinum or Diamond member, depending on how often I can get to Las Vegas, so I'm not sure if this is a sign of desperation.

    Thanks,
    Ben

Rob can chime in better than me on this, as I haven't stayed there in a few years. My (dated) take is that Harrah's Laughlin is one of the better properties in Laughlin, and it's one of the few with a mini private beach (and I do mean mini) bordering the river. It's a nice property. I feel obligated to mention that a decade ago Harrah's was shot up during a biker week type of thing. So if nice relaxation on a river with the occasional ducking for shoot-outs is your cup of tea, this may be the place.

Yeah, I can give you some info.

Harrah's Laughlin is about 95 miles southeast of Las Vegas. It's the only Caesars property in the town.

Laughlin itself is a "working class" version of Vegas. It is very small (basically just one long street of hotels), and sits on the Colorado River. Despite the riverside location, there are oddly not many water activities in the area. You can hang out on a (small) beach attached to Harrah's, you can ride the "water taxi" between hotels, and you can rent a boat from a few places across the river (in Bullhead City, Arizona), but most who come to Laughlin don't tend to do all that much on the river.

Laughlin is brutally hot in the summer. It's worse than Las Vegas. For example, today's high in Laughlin was 111 degrees, and it's only June 5! By contrast, Las Vegas was 104. In July, don't be surprised to see Laughlin topping 120 on some days,

Laughlin is quieter than Vegas. The tourists there are less glamorous and stuck up. The limits at the games are lower. The restaurants are not as good, but there are more low-priced options than you will find in Vegas.

Harrah's Laughlin itself is okay. If you don't have kids with you, you should ask for the "Adults Only" tower, as it's both quieter and nicer.

Try to ask for a suite. They might give it to you if they are slow. The standard applied for a suite in Laughlin is lower than in Vegas.

Harrah's Laughlin is not luxurious, but it's not terrible. The dining isn't much to write home about. There's an okay cafe, the mediocre Guy Fieri Mexican restaurant, and a steakhouse I've never tried (though I can't imagine it being on par with the better steakhouses in Vegas).

If you're a single guy, you're not going to see too many hot, single chicks around Laughlin. Unlike Vegas, where "girls' trips" are common, most young and middle-aged women in Laughlin tend to be there with a boyfriend or husband.

Given that you're in New York, perhaps you should take them up on the free flight, and then rent a car and drive to Vegas.

One little trick, which I believe still works: If you have comped rooms in Vegas, you can have your hotel in Laughlin at the same time, and they typically don't notice. If you want to do this, book your Vegas room first, then respond to the Laughlin offer. They will likely book it for you without bothering to check that you also have a Vegas room. Of course, this will hurt your ADT, but I don't know if you care about that. If you do, you can always just split the trip to where part of it is in Laughlin and part is in Vegas, and then return to Laughlin for the flight home.

You probably won't want to spend a week in Laughlin.

LOL -- Dan, when did the Laughlin Chamber of Commerce hire you?

Yeah, it's brutally hot in the summer. I've had a couple of curious experiences in Laughlin, which I'll mention. First, I noticed that many of the Greyhound buses stopping there get the drug dog treatment when they arrive. Second, I was coming over the mountain from Las Vegas and had just crested, doing about 82-83 at daybreak driving down into Laughlin, when a sports car blew by me doing at least 100. A cop pulled out from somewhere and was in pursuit. I was between them, so I pulled over to the side of the road to get out of the way. To my surprise, the cop pulled in behind me and abandoned his pursuit. He came up to my car and said, "Who's your buddy?" It was daybreak, so at first I thought he meant someone was hiding in my backseat, so I swiveled around to look. Nobody there. So he meant the driver of the other car. He wound up giving me a ticket with an inflated speed on it, which I fought via letters to the magistrate. I wound up paying a lower fine and not getting points. But I still have to figure he must have thought the maniac speeder was a decoy to sneak me over the Arizona border for some reason. I never came to a clear conclusion on the matter.

So weird stuff, no hot girls, real hot, but if you're gonna stay there, Harrah's is probably the best option. I'd do 48 hours there and go into Las Vegas, as Dan suggested.

The difference between $140 and being comped is the time of year. Other than Thanksgiving to Christmas, the vacancy rates are much higher in the summer than the rest of the year. The extreme heat keeps people away.

Thanks very much for the information. I won't be taking advantage of the offer, I prefer Las Vegas, where I don't feel trapped at the resort. It's why I don't go to Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun, you're at a resort in the middle of nowhere, and you spend your whole time there. Atlantic City is almost as bad, since there isn't a whole lot to do outside the casino-hotels.

As I said, if you don't mind the 95 mile drive to and from Vegas, it might be worth it to take this offer just for the free airfare.

But I can understand if you don't want to.

Personally, I never visit Laughlin for more than 1-2 days.
