Thread: Lunar Eclipse 8-21-2017

These things are never that big a deal except for all the hype they create, and most of that is generated by opportunistic & greedy sales folks.

Being humbled by space is something you can associate with every day, and it dwarfs any eclipse. Just go out at night and look up into the stars, or get yourself a good pair of binoculars or any decent telescope for a more intense experience. See all those stars and planets up there? It has no end, and if there is an end then think of what could possibly be on the other side of that "end"....more universe? A wall? So what's on the other side of that "wall" and how far out does that go? And then what?

Eclipses are indeed a minor event.

    "A minor event?"

The sun being blocked and the skies going dark in broad daylight is "a minor event?"

I'll concede that it is not as awe-inspiring as it may have been to ancient peoples who did not understand the actual cause of the event.

Yes, there is hype surrounding it, and the motel owners are making a profit off of it, but that is supply and demand at work.

A solar eclipse, an F-4 tornado, a full blown hurricane, an erupting volcano: all display the immediate power of nature; all are impressive.

I just googled it. Coach is right. It's a solar eclipse. V, you have more faith than I do. Hwy 101 down the Oregon coast, with all it's twists and turns, is a pain in the ass to drive anyway, especially in the summer tourist season. One million people are expected to pour into Oregon. And I'm sure a lot of them are headed for the Oregon coast.

    It's really not that dark.

    The trafficsituation should be interesting.

My plan is to spend the weekend in Lincoln City on the Oregon coast and eat most of my meals at the nearby Chinook Winds casino.

But then it occurred to me that with the massive hordes supposedly descending on that area to view the solar eclipse the casino might actually run out of food.

Either that, or they'll be too jam-packed to get in.

    This could get crazy.

Please. Stay home. Watch it on the web or on TV. Remember the Triffids.

Yes, compared to what's out there, a solar eclipse is nothing more than a minor event. And anyone who flocks to any event where they know in advance that crowds of people will be there, aren't the best planners. Stay home and watch it on TV. Crowds of people today are not the same as it used to be. These days, people going into crowded situations who have some sort of trouble are getting exactly what they ask for.

If you want decent food the Chinook Winds is OK. But if you're looking for the best food on the entire Oregon Coast then head up about 20 miles to Pelican Pub & Brewery in Pacific City. Incredible food (and hardly only cheap pub type food), beer, and it's right on the Sandy beach. Only problem with Oregon is that most days are cloudy and/or foggy.

This is sort of a vacation for me.

Basically it's just a good reason to head down there; gee, my favorite casino is located there.

    Who knew?

So long as we are able to arrive and leave without too much disruption, that's fine.

I'm actually looking forward to the crowds, the buzz.

In Idaho restaurants and grocery stores have been advised to stock up. The restaurants have been advised to cut their menu to three items in order to crank the food out faster. My new plan for the eclipse is to drive into it on the 21st then drive back out. I'll be coming from the north so the traffic shouldn't be that bad getting in and out. I have a bunch of canned meat, crackers, and water in the trunk so to hell with the restaurants.

I'm also thinking the farthest north the traffic from the south on the 15 will go is Hwy 33. Hwy 33 runs east and west and sits dead middle in the path of total darkness. This intersection between 15 and 33 is out in the middle of nowhere. I have a friend who is planning on camping at Mud Lake on 33 just off the 15. I wonder how many other people have the same plan.

I was on the Oregon Coast in March. Spent the night in Lincoln City. The best weather is at Cape Foulweather. LOL! Captain Cook named the place and he was right. We don't get hard rains in Montana, not like Oregon anyway.

The only thing I know (that I've read) that is unusual about the solar eclipse is that to our knowledge EARTH is the only place in the known universe it can be viewed.

It's getting close. I'm now working the machines in the small towns of southwest Montana. I'm hovering around the area so I can make a beeline for the path of totality on Monday morning. It looks like the only hotel room I can get for Sunday night is 200 miles from the path.

Mickey, have you noticed anything about what you keep saying? First you and some gay guy are going to shack up in some rv, then it's a motel room that you can't afford, then you're going here, then there, then somewhere else.

    Don't forget the 30-pack.

I have to admit, that was a blast from the past. That was one of my fave movies. I have a first printing of the paperback somewhere.

A good example of the power a solar eclipse can have upon the clueless and the superstitious:

    What, Me Worry?

I'm in Dillon, Montana on the 15 and 120 miles north of the path. I spent the night in a hotel here. Rooms are all sold out tonight. The town is now packed with traffic. RV's out the ass. Waiting lines at the gas stations. But I beat them to the punch and gassed up last night when I rolled in. Worked some machine plays in the town today. Now I'm headed to Rexburg, Idaho. I'm all stocked up with food, water, and my camping gear.

Why do you even care about this? Smartmoney says you'll either be in sleeping it off when the event occurs, or too drunk to know what's going on. Alcoholics look for ANY reason to pour it down. A total solar eclipse is as good an excuse to abuse booze as there is, and it'll obviously do wonders for the adult beverage industry.

How about the first photo mickeycrimm.
