Thread: "Suncoast cannot intervene on customer's behalf" regarding handicapped spot tickets

  1. #1

That's a new sign recently posted in the Suncoast parking lot.

    Wonder what happened.

Casinos are notoriously lax in their enforcement of parking violations, for obvious reasons.

Someone at Suncoast must have gotten a handicapped spot ticket, and then made a huge deal to the Suncoast how they deserve the equivalent in comps.

Dan I'm guessing some high roller thought they had the right to park anywhere they wanted.

Hi-roller or whatever....just another idiot who thinks the rules don't apply to them. For the same reason I enjoy and applaud every time I see a cop writing up some speeder or red light runner on the side of the road, it is equally gratifying to see the police punishing handicapped parking violaters at the Suncoast. It was likely some distraught "AP" anyway whose theoretical "edge" just took a hit from the reality of a parking ticket.

    Dude... lay off the cocaine!!

That driver deserved to have his/her car ticketed/towed.

While we're on the subject... I have seen several motorcycles with "disabled/handicapped" license plates. How it that possible? Can handicapped persons control motorcycles?

There are other handicaps that are not necessarily physical handicaps, at least in the way you'd think. I believe if you're shorter than 4' 10" or 4' 8" you're legally handicapped. I was an acquaintance of someone who had some sort of disease which meant he got a handicapped sticker/placard so he could park near entrances of buildings in case he had some emergency. You can probably get one for even being a little overweight not necessarily morbidly obese.

Handicapped for being "a little overweight"? What's the statute--stupidity?

Is it any wonder that a self-proclaimed AP said that??

Morbid obesity (40% BMI) usually qualifies someone as handicapped. Unfortunately, seven to eight percent of Americans are morbidly obese so, theoretically, they could qualify for handicapped spaces. That is a boatload of people, and it isn't going to diminish anytime soon. Sad but true. Literally seven to eight percent of the population can seek out handicapped parking on weight alone. Pretty embarrassing for a country and a culture.

No, I don't agree with it, but that's the reality in the US of A.

This is a constant annoyance for me. People using the handicapped space when they aren't handicapped. There was a 2 year period when I could not walk--I had to use crutches--and I still wouldn't park in a handicapped space. Pure laziness--like the drive through window. Get off your effin fat ass and walk into Starbucks and get your coffee. Morons wait in line 20 deep and I just walk in.

I try to park a long way away from anywhere, so people who need spaces close can use them. My mom, aunt, and uncle all had MS, so I have some respect for proper use of the spaces.

I have a different kind of beef with handicapped parking. I hate it when someone with handicapped plates uses a parking space NOT for handicapped drivers.

This happened a couple of years ago when I went shopping at Trader Joe's here in LA. TJ's are famous for having small parking lots. On a Sunday afternoon every spot in the lot was filled and cars were waiting and I saw a car with a handicapped license plate parked in a regular spot WHILE THE HANDICAPPED SPOTS WERE WIDE OPEN.

    Wow you are easily perturbed.

Isn't it possible that when the offending driver got there all of the handicapped spots were taken?

Or maybe the driver was using the car of a handicapped person, but not handicapped himself/herself, so they were being considerate by not taking a handicapped spot.

Absolutely those are possibilities. It's also possible the "handicapped person" wasn't really handicapped at all One of the big problems in LA is that so many people have handicapped license plates because they get their doctors to write them and keep renewing them.

I'm not sure why a front row parking spot matters that much anyway.

Is there a handicapped shopping aisle, where all the groceries are closer to the parking lot?

Redietz... back in the 1980s I remember Publix supermarkets having an express aisle at the front of the store with the things most shoppers just "run in" for. Thought I'd mention that since you mentioned a handicapped aisle close to the parking lot.

There are always far more handicapped spots (by law) than actually needed. That's why you never see all of them filled in any lot, unless people are parking in them illegally.

I do think it's hilarious that some gambler at Suncoast bitched to them about being ticketed. When you park in a handicapped spot, you're gambling, and this person apparently lost. Tough luck!

Damn sure wasn't an AP. Suncoast ran all the AP's off years ago. You know that, Rob.

Had a case a few years ago where we represented a large condo association. This particular development gave each unit owner one dedicated parking space. A handicapped woman sued because there were not enough handicapped spaces. Well--there couldn't be. Each unit owner got one space. We offered to move her space right to the door but she insisted there be twenty something handicapped spaces to comply with the law. The judge could not see the distinction that these were not public spaces but rather were owned, by deed, by the unit owners.

So we did what we usually wind up doing when the judge is an idiot--file bankruptcy for the association and the lady doesn't even get her closer space.

Sometimes the laws make no sense.

Scroll down a bit and it shows criteria for having a placard or plate. One of them is if you can't walk 200 feet without resting.

    Booze talking again?

Ever hear of "promotions that turn a play positive?" That's AP lingo for "that's a $75/hr. edge, and whether I win or lose doesn't matter because it is a good play!"
