Thread: Las Vegas Neon Museum

    Anyone been to this thing?

It's a bit expensive -- $15-$19 for a daytime tour, and $22-$28 for an evening tour. Each tour is only an hour, and it's the only way to see the museum.

    Looks interesting, though:

Never been and frankly zero interest. The Mob Museum I liked and I still haven't been to the Atomic Bomb (name?) Museum on Flamingo.

I got free passes as part of the 7 Star trip a couple of years ago. It was OK, but probably wouldn't pay for it. I recommend that you don't go during the day in the summer.

I was just there a few days ago and did enjoy it. My wife who is younger and had never heard of many of the casinos really liked it.

They were not open during the day. Last tour in the A.M. was about 9 and then re-open in the evening.

Tour is only an hour and it is a not for profit organization. Our guide was pretty informative and good humored.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Neon Museum. But I have a fascination with all things Las Vegas and especially, old Las Vegas, before my time. I love looking at old slot machines and pictures of casinos. So the neon Museum fit right in to that.

But it depends on your perspective. I went with my younger brother and my mother, neither who had ever been to Vegas before 3 years ago, nor shared my fascination with 'Old Vegas'. My brother thought it a complete waste of time and money. He said it was "paying to walk through a dump site". My mother fell somewhere in between. Although she had never been to Las Vegas and had no connection, she seemed to enjoy learning and seeing some of the history.

A couple of years ago I walked thru a "specialty dump" for old cars. It was called "U-Pick" and I was fascinated seeing the old heaps. I tried to find some hood ornaments that I thought would be nice collectibles but they were already "picked."

Where else could I buy a "Castaways" t-shirt?? And a "Dunes" for the wife. Wife had never heard of the Castaways but we stayed at the Dunes once before it closed.

Ah yes, The Castaways. Alan, you'll appreciate this. I was in the Castaways once, putting in entries for the original SuperContest (before it was called the SuperContest and was called simply "The Castaways Contest"), and I saw a woman come staggering in. She was crying and a mess, and had one shoe in her hand and torn stockings. She was 30-something. Well, she used the pay phone near me and called her bosses. Evidently, she was a TV reporter (I think it was ABC), and she had been wandering about the Sands across the street. Security had come up on her, mistaking her for another kind of working girl, and had asked her for ID. She had told them, she said to her boss, to go f*** themselves. Well, they grabbed her and physically carried her to the front of the Sands and, she said, tossed her bodily out of the front door onto the sidewalk. Out of everything she had to be upset about, she was most upset that her other shoe was broken, and she had just bought the damn shoes.

Ah yes, the days of the boys in Las Vegas. I have not seen the Neon Museum, but I'll schedule a visit. It's in a somewhat rugged neighborhood, is it not? Sort of a Thai neighborhood?

They ought to do that with some Fox reporters.

There was a "bad element" hanging around the area. I had hoped to walk to the downtown casinos from there but decided against when I looked around. It was also 10:30 at night. Cab or Uber it and I wouldn't hang around the area.

Also cool that they took the old LaConcha (spelling??) Hotel from next to the Riv and moved it there to use as their office.

Regnis, I stayed at the Convention Center Lodge, next to the La Concha, a couple of football seasons way back when. Great place, as you could just walk across the street to the Stardust. The Convention Center Lodge had a lot of retirees who were originally east coast and Chicago guys. It'll be great to see the La Concha again.

    Thanks for the feedback, guys.

I agree the price seems high. Maybe I will put off visiting this until there's some promotion to get in cheaper.

I have some moderate interest in seeing it, but it's not something I feel is a must-see.

I am a fan of old Vegas, though. I'm old enough to remember seeing these old casinos from the street in the '70s and '80s, but too young to have played in them.
