Thread: Gambling With An Edge 5 Oct 2017

I also felt like both Munchkin and Dancer were less than impressed by some of the amounts mickey talked about involving his plays. The thing is mickey is of the 'grinder' class of AP's (as am I). We play frequently, accumulating relatively small amounts of EV here and there and playing almost everyday, these amounts add up to a decent living (mid or mid to high 5 figures).

Someone like Munchkin is not of the grinder variety. For those that don't know, Munchkin has thrown in with the likes of James Grosjean in the last few years and they chase much bigger plays. Six figure type plays that they spend weeks and/or even months setting up and scoping out and then go in and whack the casino before they know what hit them. And then boom....the play is history.

It's the shearer vs slaughter mentality. So someone of that "big score" mentality isn't going to be impressed by some 'grinder' chasing and accumulating small plays. That said, I was a little disappointed that it came across as Munchkin "looking down" at mickey (That's the feeling I got anyway). Munchkin really isn't like that, so maybe he needs to work on that a bit.

As for Dancer, I only know him from the show, but I get the feeling he frequently is looking down on other AP's. As is so common with AP's, he has some of that, "I am better", "I am bigger than you" ego to him.

I think their reactions extended beyond the money to the entire setup. Richard in particular has talked about needing the camaraderie of teammates for gambling to be enjoyable. As I recall, the reaction was similar when a guest mentioned his friend relocating to Iowa for a play at the casinos. The money value wasn't mentioned, but Richard was like, it would have to be a hell of a lot for me to move to Iowa. Montana would probably be considered worse, especially with the venues being those shithole bars.
John Hennigan took a big bet that he couldn't spend six weeks in Des Moines, Iowa. He showed up in Des Moines then payed off the bet at a discount and was back in Vegas in less than a week.

The money isn't in the alky bars. Them people don't have much money to blow. It's the classier places where the ploppies create a lot of plays for me.

Mickey aren't they all bars? Does any bar have more than 20 machines?

It says All Indian casinos are Class II video gaming devices. What about the bars, are they class 2 or class 3?

Steve Bourie's information in the link is dated. He doesn't mention video line games which hit the casinos in 2012. The limit is 20 machines per liquor license but not all bars have the full complement of machines. They do what the traffic will bear. There are about 18,000 machines spread out among 1700 bars. That's an average of about 11 machines per bar. But like I said on the show a lot of the places are not really bars anymore, they are casinos that don't have a bar with stools to sit at. Those places all have the full complement of twenty. Here's a couple of pics I took yesterday of the inside of one. One pic is of one side of the room and the other pic is the other side. As you can see there is no bar with bar stools. The table you see in the center is for people waiting on a particular machine. You can see the floor attendent in the pictures. She is everything rolled into one. She's the casino host. You will be greeted when you walk in the door. She's the changemaker. You will be asked if you need change. She's the cocktail server. You will be asked if you want a drink. And she's the cashier. She's cashes your tickets. She can also fix minor problems with the machines like a ticket that won't come out or rebooting a machine because the screen sensor quit working.

The bar/casinos are all class III. The Indian casinos were initially just class II but it was pretty hypocritical of the state to allow them just class II but allow the bars to have class III. So now most of the Indian casinos have a mixture of class II and class III machines. I seen the same thing in Oklahoma.

Another thing about the Indian casinos here. They are the most isolated Indian casinos in the country. And they only have a few hundred machines each. If you walk into one you will see that most of the gamblers are Indians (tribal members). The Indian casinos here win most of the money from their own tribal members.

A bar with 20 machines is a bar. Calling it a casino doesn't change it from being a bar. What's more important is that you keep winning.

But it's a very different environment, targeting a different type of person.

That looks exactly like the neighborhood places in Las Vegas with usually 15 machines. They have female names to appeal to women: Dotty's, Molly's, Joanie's.

I presume everything in Montana is smoke-free, which I would enjoy, although smoking policy should be at the discretion of each individual proprietor, IMO. The Vegas places unfortunately all seem to embrace smoking unless within a ban-hammered location such as a grocery store.

    Great interview, mickey.

Enjoyed hearing your stories, and your description of what you do in Montana.

Would like to meet you sometime.

You were very well spoken, as others here have noted.

BTW, I'm pretty sure that GWAE's appearance on KLAV 1230 Las Vegas was brokered time. That is, they paid to appear there, like an infomercial. Here is an article explaining how KLAV was a station which did that: https://www.reviewjournal.com/sports...-many-outlets/

KLAV is now a Spanish language station.

It also has a weak signal of 1000 watts.

Mickey, I was going to post on WoV about the interview on oct. 5th, but then I saw the link to your interview.

I checked the GWAE website and saw that you were interviewed and it says that it was aired on Sept. 28th, not Oct. 5th.

    Huh?
    What, Me Worry?
