Thread: MLB network

  1. #1
This question really has to do with sports and sports betting but I am going to post here so people can see it. If Druff wants to move it fine.

I know some of you guys bet sports. Does anyone subscribe to the MLB network?

With more time on my hands this year, I have been betting a lot of baseball. And I subscribe to the MLB channel so I can watch some of the games I have wagered on.

I said some because here in Vegas, all California teams (5 of them) and the Arizona Diamonbacks are blacked out or excluded from the subscription because they are deemed "too close? Even though all are 300 miles or more.

It is annoying because on a weekday after all the 4pm and 5pm games from most of the country we have a few west coast games and I am blacked out from all if them except Seattle.

Just seems weird to be blacked out of 6 markets. Are you blacked out if this many markets in other parts of the country?

How do you play blackjack? I noticed you have been posting on GF every 45 to 90 min from the time you get up to the time you go to bed.

Not that I owe you any answers, but my blackjack play is down considerably this year after getting doxed and having several new entries in the databases late last year. I mostly play during the busier times I used to avoid. I am not going to announce exactly when, but one may note the time of this post at 5:30 am on a Sunday morning.

It was a longshot that anyone here subscribes to MLB and would have a legitimate answer to my question. It is just annoying that games involving 20% of the teams are blacked out, whether they are playing home or away.. I can understand protecting the "home market" and wanting people to watch local games on the local outlets, but Las Vegas doesn't even have a team. How are 6 different teams all 300 miles away our "home market"?

I do subscribe, mainly for the Phillies here. The only team blacked out in my area is the Tampa Bay Rays but I get their games through my Spectrum cable on Bally Sports so it isn’t an issue for me.

I would call MLB customer service and ask how the blackouts work and if this is correct. There also could be an IP issue placing you closer to CA and those cities than you really are. I am much closer to Miami than you are to SF and I still get the Marlins games.

Quick comments on blackouts: I know you think you have it bad, kewlJ, but....

Before I moved out to California six years ago for a two-year stay, I had both satellite and the best cable money could buy. The blackout situations have gotten increasingly worse and led me to cancel the satellite.

Basically, because we are located in northeastern Tennessee, we get a boatload of both SEC and ACC college football games blacked out. It is annoying as hell. With satellite, I had the option of paying $20 to $25 to see a game if I really wanted to, but that was just for a single game. Watching half a dozen games or more like that on a weekend adds up pretty quickly, and in college football, half the time you are paying to watch a non-competitive game.

The local cable doesn't allow single-purchase for college football, so I have to duck and weave and use ESPN plus and various streaming on laptops hooked to monitors.

I'm feeling your pain as my grand television set-up occurs this Monday, which is a day of great hassle and reliance on the tech savvy of others.

So the bottom line is that there was no easy way for me to circumvent the blackouts with cable. With satellite, I just paid a premium per game, but that was too expensive, really, for what it was worth, although I ended up buying one or two games each week, anyway.

And here's a gambling piece of advice. I didn't buy games because I was wagering on them. I bought them because I did not feel that I knew what the games would look like.

I am not a professional handicapper and not trying to be. Sports betting has always been just entertainment for me.

Watching the Phillies has been an added bonus this year. I haven't watched them all that much in recent years because they sucked and I didn't know many players other than Harper and Nola. This year I have enjoyed watching them and seeing them back in playoff contention for the first time in 12 years (I think). They won the world series in 2008, when I was in Philly, lost the world series to Yankees in 2009, lost NLCS to Giants in 2010 and It think that was the last playoff apparency unless I am forgetting.

In addition they also had quite a good run betting wise after fired Girardi. I think they were 21-29 when they fired him and won 44 of next 64 or something like that. I was on them not all, but a good portion of that run. Of course now they are playing the mets last two weekends and can't barely score. Baring a collapse, which as Phillies fans, we have all seen too many times, they will make the expanded playoffs. Don't know that they are going too far but it will be nice to see them in playoffs anyway.

2011 lost to the Cardinals in the heartbreaker where Roy Halladay lost Game 5 to his friend Chris Carpenter 1-0 and Ryan Howard tore his Achilles running to first base. They won over 100 games that year but this was the end of the run. Possibly a better team on paper than the 08 team. And it all went downhill from there as you said.

Yeah that sounds familiar. Sept 2011 was when I had got sick and had my first heart value replacement, so I was going through that at about playoff time. Probably why I don't have a good memory of it. Regardless it is good to see them in contention and hopefully in the playoffs.

Pat Burrell was gone by that 2011 team. He actually won a second championship with the Giants in 2010. he was probably my favorite player from that team because I knew him some. Not good friends or anything, I don't even think he knew my real name. He had a name he called me, I'll keep that private.

I met him when he started attending the bar in Olde City that I drank every Friday and Saturday night. NOT a gay bar a regular corner type sports bar with a club on top floor, that he liked. But when he came in on Fridays and Saturdays after homes games, he would always have a couple beers with us locals. he was a good guy and pretty funny. One very rainy Sunday afternoon, the Phils game was called off early and I was at the bar with a few of the guys when Pat came in. The electricity was off, so the bar was really closed, but about 6 of us, Pat included and the owner, who was my buddy, sat there drinking all day. With no TV to watch any games and no Jukebox, we just talked. Pat had a lot of stories about things that happened during his minor league days in Florida. Apparently, he did not care for Florida as you do. It was a fun day.

Getting ready to watch the Eagles and Phillies. I know it’s preseason but I’ll have it on my IPad while the Phillies are on the TV. Since I have Bucs season tickets we get NFL+ for free so every preseason game is on it.

Anyways I was thinking about your blackout and I wonder how the bars in Vegas are showing the games? When I had my bar I had to have both Direct TV for the sports packages but still had to keep Comcast for Comcast Sports Net since the Phillies, Sixers and Flyers were blacked out in my area. It was a racket that cost me close to $30k a year but it wasn’t an option as I had over 30 TV’s and packed the place for football along with Philly sports when the teams were playing good.

Assuming the different sports channels like Comcast, Spectrum and Ballys aren’t available on cable there, how are the bars getting the Dodgers, Padres and Giants games? Or are those channels available on Cox (I think that is the Vegas cable company) cable?

Just seems strange that many teams are blacked out in Vegas for you.

As for Pat the Bat, I’ve heard many stories about him during Spring Training down here in Clearwater over the years. Supposedly he loved to party every spring and was well known in the local bars and nightclubs along the beach.

I don't know the answers. Obviously the casinos and sports book have different than me. I think they have direct TV don't they? There are lots of California people here, transplants and visitors, so it wouldn't work for all Cali teams to be blacked out at casinos.

I ordered MLB through Amazon Prime on my firestick connected to the TV. I also have Cox and think I could have also ordered through Cox as well. I wonder if that would have made any difference? Doesn't matter, but if I order next year, I will look more into it. 6 teams blacked out home and away games is more than you think. It can be as many as 6 blacked out games a day out of 15 if they all are playing non blacked out teams. But usually a couple are playing each other so it is 3 or 4 games a day out of 15. And if the Phillies do a swing through California and Arizona or even play a homestand against 3 California teams, I don't see any of those games. That is why I asked. It just seems very extreme to have 6 blacked out teams. SF and Oakland are almost 600 miles away for God sakes.

Maybe you should travel. I’ve been databased, pulled over by state police leaving a casino searched and arrested, narced on to casino security by broke scarab hustlers , had team members threatened by organized crime, and former drug cartel members yet we still press on. I think Gone are the days of Just setting up shop in one casino. This is also why when I do play BJ I never utilize cover. Yes I play when I find good games in my travels. Mostly at places I’m not hitting for other things, and not as much as you. The professional narc community seems to growing. Mostly made up of broke gamblers and failed Or jealous APs. There seems to be no loyalty to the craft anymore

Well Glory be to God. A decent post and discussion without all the name calling. I hope you don't have some 24 hour bug and we can have more of these productive discussions.

I did some traveling and hotel stays before I relocated to Las Vegas. During my time playing Atlantic City and living in Philly, I made multiple trips to Connecticut and I don't know 6, 7, 8 trips to Las Vegas, one lasting 5 weeks. I also stayed in casino hotels in Atlantic city 2-3 nights a week every week for the final couple years so as to minimize travel back and forth to Phila.

I know some AP's like you and mickey and even some of the blackjack guys I network with do extensive travel, and spend many nights in hotels. When I made the move to Las Vegas, part of that decision was because I really didn't want that lifestyle. I prefer to spend my nights in my own comfortable home, surrounded by my own possessions and comforts. What traveling and frequent hotels stays I did for a few years was enough for me. I mean I do a little traveling each year but it is minimal compared to some of you traveling AP's.

And that is why I picked Las Vegas. I knew the quantity of games would allow me to play a pretty big rotation of games, so I wouldn't be making too much of a nuisance of myself and seeing the same people too regularly and if I made the trade off of not playing too high of stakes, I thought I could achieve some longevity. And I have. A big part of that process is figuring out just what stakes are tolerated at different places, at different times and different days. This is what Las Vegas really is, quantity vs better quality elsewhere, especially in blackjack terms.

There are still occasional backoffs and occasional databasing, but these things minimize it. As a matter of fact in the past couple years some of my worse database incidents have occurred following some out of town play, one at Valley Forge and one in Reno. So I might be even better to stay in Vegas where I have a pretty good read on things for my style of "milking it" play.

And of course my problems this year are not because I mis-read anything. It is strictly a narc type situation that you mentioned. And yes, there seems to be more and more of that. I guess the answer to that is not to participate on any public type forum, but I just have an issue with myself or any real player that wants to participate, being driven away by trolls and narcs.

    I subscribe, and can answer.

Vegas gets a raw deal because it doesn't have its own team, yet is in sorta-driving-distance from 6 different teams -- the Angels (Anaheim), Dodgers (Los Angeles), Padres (San Diego), Diamondbacks (Phoenix), A's (Oakland), and Giants (San Francisco).

The latter two definitely shouldn't be in the Vegas market, as they're over 500 miles away. Even the first four really shouldn't be, as they are all 250-300 miles away.

MLB doesn't enjoy doing this. They're contractually required to do so, as each team is given a "TV market", and they must black out that local TV market in order to protect those huge cable TV contracts.

It's a very stupid thing to do, as it drives young people from watching games, making it impossible to watch your local team on handheld devices! MLB already has a very aging fan demographic, of which I'm part.

The only way around this is to use a service which fakes your location. Smart DNS Proxy is one that works, as does another called Unlocator. These will NOT work on your handheld devices unless they're jailbroken, but they will work on a computer without any kind of modification.

So if Vegas had a MLB team, say the on again, off again rumored A's, that would be the only blackout, but with no team there are 6 different teams that claim this market and we are blacked out of as many as 40% of the MLB games each day? (6 blackout games if each team was playing a non-blacked out team)

    How ridiculous!

Yes, if the A's move to Vegas, it is likely no team will be blacked out except the A's.

So I’m in Tahoe this week and the Phillies are blacked out because they are playing the Dbacks. WTF? I figured it this weekend against the Giants, but seriously against Arizona?
