Never mind genealogy. I ran into a big problem when I signed up for social security because my birth certificate was made out in error in New York City. My mother's name was listed as her maiden name.

While I am not questioning the above, I have to wonder what difference that would make when you apply for Social Security?

I mean, do you think the Feds give a hoot whether you are legit or just a bastard?

Your mother's marital status at the time of your birth should have zero affect on your ability to prove you are indeed alan mendelson.

I applied for and started getting payments recently. I am getting my 4th monthly check/deposite in a little over 2 weeks.

I did it all over the phone in a 5 minute conversation with somene at SS. I didnt have to present a birth certificate. I didnt have to present or fax or email anything.

this process was the antithesis of the steriotypical red tape that people cry about with govt agencies.

Not only did they do what they were supposed to do in a timely manner(I applied 2 months before by phone with a person at a local office that called me back ...i had to make an appointment for the phone enrolment)...but they sent me a summary of my four 401k plans so I could manage my finances. Of course I didnt need that info...I know exactly whats in my accounts....but it was a nice touch.

I took it early at 62.......I could have waited and got more money...but screw it.....I will take what I can when i can get it.

But no....they didnt need any documents. They had all they needed in their computer system.

Maybe they just like fucking with Alan.

Using modern sensibilities........it shouldnt shock a 30 or 40 something SS worker to see people with way different names than their mother or father.(ALTHOUGH back in my day..it was very rare, and often scandalous )

When I applied I had to give my parents names as I didn't have a Social Security card. Lost it. My mother's name appeared as her maiden name on ALL of her records and I didn't know that. So when I gave her married name nothing went thru. Luckily I had a helpful rep at the Social Security office and we tried to figure it out. Checking maiden names was obvious.

Why my mother had her maiden name used I can't explain. I even asked my siblings if they were sure my parents were married. LOL They were.

Thanks, redietz. In the 19th century a lot of big towns had cemeteries everywhere. But the land eventually became to valuable to have cemeteries on them. The towns would exhume the graves and reinterr the caskets in a consolidated cemetery on the outskirts of town. St. Louis was no exception. Bellefontaine Cemetery is huge.
