Thread: casino etiquette

I am playing VP at a local casino. It's not very crowded. A guy sits down at the game next to me. Now, as I always do because I have a bad back from 40 years of hockey, I stand up and continue playing. I see out of the corner of my eye the guy keeps giving me dirty looks. Finally he says "sit down--you're annoying me".

I look over and say "what?". He starts yelling at me that my standing is distracting him and I should "sit the fuck down". I think about engaging with him but instead just ignore him. Also, I am getting good cards so I don't just walk away. Now I feel a sneeze coming and I turn my head completely away from him to the other side and sneeze into my sleeve. Now he starts screaming at me about washing my hands after I sneeze so I don't spread germs.

At this point I look at him and ask him if he really wants to start something here. He says he does. I'm a lover, not a fighter I tell him. He F bombs me a few more times. So I call my friend who let's just say is a debt collector, and ask him to stop by. He says is there trouble--I say maybe.

My friend comes and sits down next to me. The guy turns green when he sees this gorilla and cashes out and goes elsewhere.

Long story to a short question---is it really distracting to another player if I switch between standing and sitting every 10 minutes or so?

It wouldn't bother me, I tend to get locked in on the cards. I'm not a pro, and I double and triple check myself on each hand. Stand up, sit down, twirl, I don't care. Smoking next to me is the only show stopper, light up next to me and I hit the cash out button and move on. No hot machine is worth breathing that shit for any length of time.

    I personally don't care.
I will get up and move for the people who hit the screen hard or who talk/yell at it. If I'm doing well I will try to hang in there but if I'm just doing ok I will cash out and move on.
I also will cash out and move on if someone sits next to me who gets in my space. That is more specific to slots than VP. Some people do this weird waving their hands over the screen like its going to make the wilds or whatever come out. They can do all they want to their machine but when they start doing it to mine too I cash out and move on.

It can definitely be annoying/distracting, yes. But it doesn't meet the level of raging and wanting to fight over it.

The only things that bug me are people who talk to themselves but who are actually aiming the "talking to themselves" at whoever's around them. Performance art.

Standing/sitting? Naw, not unless you're wearing a pink tutu that lights up when you move.

RS-I am curious as to why standing would be annoying/distracting. At a BJ table where you may be counting there are people standing and sitting and coming and going and that never distracted me from the count. Why would it matter at a VP game?

I have also had people complain about my standing on an airplane. But I am just unable to sit for long periods of time. In a movie I sit in the last row so that I can stand whenever I want.

Obviously depends on the situation, but someone standing in your peripheral vision gives off the vibe that they're watching you. Happens on table games too, to an extent, like when someone is just standing there watching....but not that bad since I'm probably concentrating more on blackjack than I am a machine.

I am always aware of people milling around MY (<- ) blackjack table. The concern is for security, casino pit who wonder outside the pit and other casino 'suits', but in keeping an eye out for them, you notice everyone.

There also is a secondary concern for non-casino people milling around watching my play, especially when I have one on a little runs, winning most of my bigger bets and chips are piling up. You want to be aware of any characters milling around that seem interested in your win. The casino environment draws these clowns too.

Its distracting, but there is no rule against it so its up to me to leave if Idont like it,

Its distracting when someone sits next to me and talks to the person on the other side of me
Its distractng if some talks on a cell phone for any length of time
Its a distraction if a person talks to the machine, orconstantly talks to me as if I am his new buddy
its a distraction if someone sits next to me wearing a heavy fragrance...man or woman
and the same if someone stood
    and smoking as well.

BUT....its up to me to leave if I dont like it. No rules or laws are broken. And people who are weak on etiquette or common courtesy, dont want me to educate them...so its not worth saying something. And if the machine was treating me welll...then I would stay and put up with it.
