Anyone surprised that converting the Sahara into a wannabe luxury property wasn't a good idea?

Anyone surprised that a high-end hotel in a bad neighborhood, far from anything else of interest on the strip, isn't doing brisk business?

Who invests in these projects, and how can I get some of their money?

Wow -- I had no idea about the 500K citizenship deals. Was this known generally about the source investors? The carpeting with the movie themes as you enter the place is one of my favorite things in Las Vegas.

Do they push gambling there, or are they trying to compete with the clubbing ,dining, shopping ect. that seems the direction things are going at the strip resorts?
Take off that stupid mask you big baby.

I stop by there every now and then, mostly because there's a William Hill there. As far as I know, they don't really have much if anything for shopping. All I remember there being a gift shop. If there is a shopping area, I've never seen it.

Pretty sure there's a night club there and I've heard club music coming from their pool area sometimes. I don't go to the pool area so idk if it's busy or not.

A year or two ago it used to be REALLY dead in there but I noticed maybe a few months ago it's been significantly busier than in the past.

I really like the SLS. Good food, quiet atmosphere, good games. You’re right—the location is shitty and that’s why they are not doing well.

They opened with the Santa Monica based Fred Segal (very cool, funky high end shop) but they did not attract the business so it shut down.

I met with the SLS lady marketing manager to see if they would be interested in more advertising. They were not. I will miss the dealer uniforms.

You mean they didn't want advertise on your how to beat bubble craps website? Shocking

I was just very surprised that the SLS came into existence in the first place.

Nobody thinks, "Let's go to the north strip toward downtown" when they think of visiting a high-end property.

Someone basically sold investors a bill of goods regarding projections for profits and foot traffic -- something very common in Las Vegas, unfortunately.

It's actually amazing how little major investors know before plunking down many millions for projects like these.

An interview with any longtime Vegas resident or tourist would have confirmed that this was destined for failure.

The location is just very bad. Across the street was one of my campgrounds when I was a street tramp in Vegas.
"More importantly, mickey thought 8-4 was two games over .500. Argued about it. C'mon, man. Nothing can top that for math expertise. If GWAE ever has you on again, you can be sure I'll be calling in with that gem.'Nuff said." REDIETZ

Wasn't there or isn't there a casino "being built" in that area, like Casino Worlds Resort or some such thing? I don't know if there were plans for Lucky Dragon at the time of the SLS being done. There's also that weird shopping/tourist area diagonally across the street.

But it seems like it would have worked out had there been another casino or two nearby, plus the weird touristy area, plus some other attraction or two in the area. I think they'd still have a chance if the area around SLS gets renovated and stuff starts going up. Attract foot traffic.

Decades ago there was a little casino there. I thumbed into Vegas in 1980 and got dropped off on the corner of Sahara and LVB. The sign on the casinos marquis said "free bowl of beef stew" so I walked on over and got a bowl. It was my first time in Vegas. I got a job selling advertising over the phone for a rag called Casino Employee News. I got paid everyday. But I was blowing the money every night on the slots. I knew nothing of casino gambling then. A week later I said "f--- it! I'll never have any money in this town" and hitchhiked on out.

One can only wonder where the unfortunate homeless in the area will get renovated to during the gentrification process (another name for renovating homeless people out of an area) of the north strip . The area around downtown Reno (Silver Legacy, Circus Circus El Dorado etc.) is now one large homeless encampment outside the casinos, but no new properties are getting built around there (that I know of) so fortunately the homeless in the area don't have to worry about getting renovated to a different area.
In Grand Sierra Resort casino, which is not downtown, about 1/8 of the people inside the casino are security (slight embellishment for dramatic effect). They posted billboards all around town saying they now have way more games and better paytables for VP. When checking the new inventory and paytables, I got a nice "may I help you" from Securita ("respect my authorita"), and if I didn't show them my ID, I would have been 86'ed (I liked some of the new inventory, so I showed them my ID, rather than leaving). So they lure people in with their billboards, and when people come in to check out the inventory they get hassled. Classy joint.

The North End of strip, has been supposed to be rebuilding since before I moved to Vegas 8 years ago. Of course the blue monster (Fontaine Bleu) project died 80% finished and Boyd froze it's Echelon project before it ever got going when the financial crisis hit. The lucky dragon is too small to even count, so really all that went on was the SLS renovation. Thinking that alone would rejuvenate the Northern strip was a miscalculation. They should have held off until some of these other projects really got going.

Currently it seems like things are moving ahead on the Northern strip again. There are at least 4 casino projects planned as well as the convention center expansion out to the strip. Resorts World just resumed construction again and the blue monster was sold with plans to finish it. (personally, I wonder how structurally sound it is having sat there for years rotting away). Wynn just purchased some land to do something with. And MGM has land up there sitting vacant if that area ever does take off, I would expect them to do something with. As a matter of fact, IF that area does take off, I would expect MGM to pull the plug on circus circus (overdue) and build something modern at that location.

I mean it's been so long that we have been hearing all this crap, that I am sort of in permanent "I'll believe it when I see it" mode. But am still hopeful.
