Very rare do I read anything interesting here or at WOV. But you have to give Mission146 credit for making that “Third Party Hotel Booking Scams” thread interesting.

Throughout my life I traveled often mostly up and down the east coast for mostly business. Of course, planned family vacations could’ve ended up anywhere on the globe, but for the most part were concentrated on the east coast. As my boys started to grow older depending on where I had to go with business on many trips, I would include the rest of the family if there was a fun weekend able to be had.

My head office made and handled all of my travel plans. They always checked if there were special requests, but for the most part as long as they were reputable places and not fleabag hotels I really didn’t care. I think I may have complained once or twice about something obvious. I always took you get what you got gracefully and moved on. If the food was bad, I would just go to a restaurant next meal. If the place was to uncomfortable to stay for a couple of days, I would call the girls and they would set me up some place else and I would just check out.

Of course, my traveling days were during a different time. Today travel plans took on a whole new meaning with the internet. Mission146 did a hell of a job explaining what actually goes on behind the check-in desk in today’s market with firsthand knowledge.

I think it’s worth reading and, in just one of the ways how the internet can convince people of one thing when actually are costing the people more in an effort to line their own pockets via the back door.

AP’s will call it just another Advantage Play, and say good for the clever thinking. But it also shows there’s a lot of smoke and mirrors going on to squeeze every buck from anyone willing to believe the nonsense they read on the internet.

For the average person traveling to Vegas this knowledge could be an Advantage Play. More of the type of things you once read about here when Alan owned the site.

Mission is a good dude and has always offered to help me with things he knows. He’s a regular guy in life and one of those people you want to like. He’s as real as they come, both good and bad and readily admits it.

While I don’t agree with you the site being better when Alan owned it, each and everyone of us has the option to add quality content to the site based on our life experiences.

In fact, I always did my own instead of piling up a month or two worth of receipts and personal statements (many 3rd world and some other countries don't supply receipts for transportation, restaurants, etc.) and handing the mess to my secretary. The best part of the trip was spending hours on international flights making several passes thru my reports until I got them to where I wanted them.

I didn't read Mission's "3rd party" reservations thread but it wouldn't surprise me that scams run wild within the industry. I spent much of my time whenever I was in my office in Europe making my own reservations wherever I travelled to rather than having my administrator get bogged down with all my "special requests". It was also much easier to set my flights up in first class while paying for business class using slick maneuvers I picked up over the years. And I favored Hyatt Regency Club floor rooms and suites, having stayed at every Hyatt on the planet at one point in time. And when no Hyatt was available I picked the best available. Plus employees got to keep the points and miles back then. I doubt much or even any of these true "advantage plays" could be worked effectively today.

I noticed a number of derogatory posts about the Wizard lately. I'll limit my criticism of him to two things: he doesn't want to believe I played the DU bug for 5-1/2 years--which makes little sense since I've explained more to him about the play than he ever dreamed of knowing--and how he's a fan of going to that worthless, hippie and low-lifes-infested Burning Man "festival" up north of here.

Anyone who even cares a smidgen about that very stupid event has a serious screw loose. On my visit there a few weeks ago I learned how disturbed most of the attendees have to be to get involved in something so foolish and pathetic. And you know all those libtard "celebrities" are said to attend this joke of a gathering? Well, the locals of Gerlach told me that they ALL helicopter in to make an appearance for 6-8 hours and then get the hell out of that shithole of a mess while no one's looking. So if you think you're going to get laid by Gweneth Paltrow or Jodie Foster, think skank chic instead.

Back in the day when I traveled often it was the owner me, and 3 or 4 of my reps. who also had to get around often. Everything was done through the girls in the office and with corp. credit cards. The rare times actual cash had to be used the reps would hand in a receipt if possible, if not we would just take their word for it and immediately reimburse them from the petty cash safe. There was no need for anyone to try and weasel a few extra dollars out of the company.

Everything was meticulously accounted for through the office, especially since we were always under IRS scrutiny. It was a waste of time especially when trying to relax during travel to make several passes thru any expense reports trying to manipulate them to take advantage of the IRS. That’s one of the jobs the girls and accountants got paid to handle and was way to petty for any of us to be bothered with.

I’m not sure what to make out of your comment saying that true money is made through travel expense reports. Maybe you’re referring to all those $100,000.00 dollar jackpots you hit during your gambling career, and the need to fudge bullshit expenses for tax benefits.

No, it sounds like a different set-up at aerospace industry companies--esp. those with offices overseas.

We had corporate AMEX and Visa cards, but the creative parts of crafting lucrative expense reports came with how expenses were reported from countries where receipts aren't available, and cash was paid. +$100k might be a good number....over time. Hard to remember how many dinners I hosted in Laos, Uruguay, Tasmania, Nigeria etc. that "included 15-20 employees of their ATC industry".

Why would I give money to help fund something I am no longer a part of and not by choice(I thought I was getting a one month Suspension, not a Nuke when I did that cussing rant which I apologized for multiple times.) Interestingly enough, I helped fund 2019's Soring Fling and was given the boot about a month after the Spring Fling. Ironically, Spring Fling 2019 was canceled due to the unexpected Coronavirus, and there was talks of a Fall 2020 Spring Fling Event but Wizard says he has doubts that even a Fall Fling Event will happen and thinks this year will be skipped entirely. He says he thinks Spring Fling 2021 is definitely happening. It is still awful that people thought I would financially help a place that I got booted out of.
