Gosh I really feel sorry for the failures. Now that I'm retired I can do what the APs do... except I don't have to gamble... just use my pension.

You could've done, and can still do, what we do. You and other gamblers just choose not to. And that is ok.

I think you are suffering from "AP" outlier-narrative syndrome. For the remainder of us, it's called romanto-intellectualism. If no one in your life is normal, then you are not normal, but special. We are all average or normal persons, when it comes right down to it, over the population of all who lived and will live.

Gosh, ever enjoy a dinner on the couch in front of the television, and have something harmlessly roll of your plate, only to watch it immediately dart all the way behind you underneath the couch? Everytime. How is that even possible?

Pensions are not free. Everyone pays for them in one way or another. AP's can stick a lot of money into a pension plan if they care too. Some working stiffs will say"yeah, but my boss pays for most of my pension plan." No the fuck he doesn't. It's part of the wage package. You work for that shit.

KJ, I do not dislike you, nor do I typically question the veracity of what you post.

My earlier concerns were based on what I'd call a level of "excessive drama" in many of your posts.

An objection more to tone than to content.

Perhaps it's calmed down a bit, and perhaps I'm just getting inured to it.

The question of whether to buy insurance or not most certainly is a form of gambling.

although since obmama changed health insurance into a something way differet than insurance.......a person can be diagnosed with needing bypass surgery, and all he has to do is wait a few months for open enrollment and sign right up. Pay a few hundred for his low income premium, and get scheduled for a couple hundred grand procedure. The antithesis of "insurance". Sort of like having your home burn down and then walking into allstate office and plopping down 300 dollars demanding a policy that will cover the burnt down home.
Totally agree. Obamacare did change insurance into something else...not insurance. Insurance is risk pooling. Paying out to any member should an adverse event happen to them. Health insurance that covers pre-existing conditions is not health insurance. The fire analogy with the house burning down and trying to collect after the event is spot on.

Before anybody gets wound up I am all for helping people with pre-existing conditions, but upending the entire healthcare system, forcing people off their plans, getting rid of catastrophic plans - because they didn’t cover “essential” items was not the answer.

While I am not anti-AP I must disagree with your thesis.

You are attempting to romanticize AP's and that dog just won't hunt.

You err in setting AP's up as being independent cowboys.

    AP's are NOT independent!

Fact is you are captives of the casinos.

You AP's spend all your working hours in the casinos, obeying their rules (stretching, not breaking them), breathing their air, playing their games.

How is that any different, really, than a guy clerking at a 7-11, or a fireman, or a pharmacist?

We all have to bow down to THE MAN one way or another.

It's not like you can do whatever the hell you want 24-7: you've got to put in the hours, same as the rest of us.

No, you're not special, unique, or exempt: I neither admire nor condemn AP's, they're just a bunch of swinging dicks trying to make a living.

I've never criticized health insurance per se. But I have criticized the ACA. The middle class is overpaying in order for the low income and welfare class to have health insurance so cheap it is almost free.

I've never criticized pension plans but I have criticized those that have crazy ideas about AP's and pension plans. An AP is a self employed person. Pensions plans are available for the self employed, like construction subcontractors, restaurant owners, lawyers....and AP's. The kind of pension plans they buy might depend on their level of success. Advantage gambling is like any other occuption; there are those that don't make it just like 90% of restaurant startups don't succeed. There are failure rates for every form of business. There are some AP's that barely survive....and then there are those that thrive (just like any other occupation.)

Alan, the blanket statements you make about AP's don't apply to all AP's.

And yet people work until they are 65 so they can retire and go hang out in casinos for the rest of their lives. Check out all the little old ladies playing the machines in between bingo sessions....and all the old geezers in the poker games.

I suppose the truly "sad" thing is that many folks upon retirement find themselves bored and feeling irrelevant and not needed any more by society.

In some cultures the elderly folks still live under the same roof as the younger generations and help out with all chores and aspects of day to day living; they have a purpose.

We in America value "independence;" we have our own homes and try to give our kids "space."

This however has a price to be paid, and the bill comes due the closer we get to our final dirtnap.

Who can blame retirees from gambling?

    Not me.

It is stimulating and they get out of their homes to interact in the world.

Much better than sitting at home day after day watching TV.

Unfortunately APs do not produce goods and services for the common good. And if they can't care for themselves when sick or old then it's a double whammy on society.

The burger flipper provides a service while the AP does not.
