Because superstition is better than science at uniting a group to pursue a common goal, and encouraging altruistic behavior. Most people are not capable of handling the cold hard truth of reality.

Mormons, despite the silliness of their beliefs, are far more reproductively successful as a group than Dawkins-style atheists.

I guess I can sum up my view by saying God isn't real, but we evolved to believe in him for a reason, and objectivity/too much intelligence in many cases can be a maladaptive adaptation.

I agree, but there’s nothing incompatible about science and believing in God. AFAIK science has not disproved God. Many scientists believe in a supernatural, personal God and of those who do not few are hostile toward religion. Objectivity.

This is the most offensive post I've ever read. It's really got me thinking about what I'm doing here. I think the cause is lost. The confederacy of dunces is winning. This forum has gone totally back to the sewer. The way of darkness, unenlightenment, bottomless ignorance, and infantile stupidity is winning out here. All threads have been wrecked. Singer has pretty much wrecked the road pic thread. The genealogy thread is now not being used for it's intended purpose. They've all gone to the sewer. The name of the forum is Vegas Casino Talk but you can't write about gambling at all without Singer and his dunce crew wrecking it. And a dopehead lawyer is offending my faith. Blocking the offending parties does no good. They are still free to write offending posts about you or your beliefs behind your back. And they can do it without being challenged by you. It's just not the correct way to do things.

I signed up on Twitter a few days ago and I'm already impressed. If someone offends you then you can block them from following you and seeing your posts and you won't be able to see theirs. This is the way things should be done.

I'm pretty much disgusted with this forum. I'll be doing my posting on Twitter where I won't have to tolerate the likes of the confederacy of dunces. I'm sure they will all be glad to have gotten rid of me. Now they can freely wallow in ignorance and stupidity.

Now that I'm a little further removed, I'm still an atheist but I understand that, despite the fact that it isn't true, it is evolutionary advantageous for a tribe to believe in it as a whole, that tribes with strong religious beliefs outcompete those who are more rational, and understand the wisdom of the proverb "the simple believe the gods to be true, the wise to be false, and the rulers to be useful".

Religion does have a benefit.....even if there is no proof of god...and that is that it keeps a certain sector of people on the straight and narrow and perhaps keeps some people from crossing the line into antisocial behavior.

It may keep people from going over the edge....from going insane.

For example the mother who losses a child.......being able to convince herself that its gods plan, and the child is with god etc....will help her mental health. Jeep her from deteriorating mentally, allows her to be productive and compartmentalize the pain.
For anyone who endures a hardship......if they are religious, they will probably endure it better than I could. And that is a big deal. I dont begrudge the mom or dad of a soldier that died in a war the ability to make it more bearable through leaning on a perceived god.
Or someone who lost all their possessions in a hurricane, falling into "faith" to help them cope with the pain. anger, helplessness .
Again, they would get through something like that mentally better than I could.

So in that respect I envy the people who actually believe in their particular perceived god and can get through hardships easier with that belief.

whether they believe in a god, or in an alien spacecraft that rules the universe.......it doesnt matter....they do get something real and of substance from something that doesnt exist. What is bad about that.

Its only when people like MC start telling us that their particular god, or alien space ship is "the one" and that we are destined to hell if we dont believe in their worldly ruler that the belief turns from comforting people...to making them feel superior to others.

Evolution is a fact of science. That being said, it's probably a fact that should never have been taught to the masses, as it's better to have the masses believe there is something watching them that will reward and punish them even if there is no earthly force watching them, to keep them inclined to behave in ways that benefit the tribe at the expense of oneself rather than vice versa.

There are no intermediary stages visible in the evolutionary cycle- that and reverse evolution examples such as the bombardier beetle which shows they would have destroyed themselves in normal evolutionary stages. Nevertheless, a horde of truths cannot sway some..
