Thread: Palms Station A.Y.C.E.

  1. #1
After a few months of renovations the new buffet at the Palms opened in mid/late December. I ended up having lunch over there the first week of January. The room is clean, new, open and pretty. The food IMO has gone downhill once again. I have been going to the Palms Buffet since the Palms opened. I have seen it go from good to bad to worse to great to ok and everything in-between. Once again Stations uses all the money they have to use up to remodel instead of making the food great. The LP cafe (I don't like saying the L word) over there is good for me if I get to go orders and they have nice boxes with paper bags to make it easy to get in and out. However the food at the new buffet was not very good compared to years past. I miss when the Palms first started to do Oxtail Soup on the Buffet. I also miss the self serve coffee machine they used to have and free beer for all patrons... that was a nice touch. I found the new buffet was very keen on greetings and service and smiles and cleanliness but the meat from the meat station was unseasoned and dry. The soup was watery. The salad bar was a nightmare and I have very long arms to reach under the glass to get all my vegetables. A normal person might struggle with the way they have it designed. The vegetarian station... well ok I didn't mess with it except for the Hummus and Pita which was good. It just seemed like they don't have as many choices as before and the quality of the food went downwards to me that is. Don't get me wrong I will eat it. I have never found a buffet that I couldn't find something good enough to eat at and I used to eat at the worst one in town when the Boardwalk Casino had the 24 hour buffet open. I miss those days of riding the bus up and down the strip for 8 hours to get some sleep.

I went to the grand opening and the line was so fuggin long I just gave up

No seperation of Chairmen people from the others.

You can get the free car wash on Thursdays and free movie ticket on Tuesdays with the offer so you can double dip, which is nice.

They do have a Chairman/President line. Perhaps on the grand opening they did not. The problem is that it is high up and you can't see it unless you look up which causes major confusion. The sign is pretty and lit up but nobody is going to look up. I had to ask the cashier where the VIP line was and she said I was in it and told me to look up. They sent us all offers to try the buffet before it really opened but we never went. I am sure you know who cares about food in this town right? I mean we can eat pretty much whenever and wherever we want for free or at least for comp.

Oh and I am sure you all know but Stations finally decided to do away with the Food Court for your comp tickets. My wife was getting upset about all the coffee we have and I explained to her many times that some Coffee Bean counter up in the Executive Offices is going to end this ability to get comped coffee bags, it is just a matter of time since I have seen the Palms do this a few times in the past. Now I look like a genius but having over 200 pounds of coffee that expires in 1 to 2 years could create a problem. They make nice gift bags though.

Donate the coffee to the homeless.
Take off that stupid mask you big baby.

Educate the homeless. Make professional AP's of them.

Have you ever tried that? You make it sound easy. In theory I agree it is easy but rounding up a bunch of homeless and trying to get them to understand how to sign up and teach them what to do turns into a nightmare. At least for me when I was messing about with it. You also run into severe trust issues. I can speak from experience because I spent a few years homeless all over the country. Mostly in Long Beach/Santa Monica, Portland Oregon and Las Vegas. Portland was a homeless persons paradise for me at least. They gave me a free bed and breakfast. They had this place called St. Vincent I think and it was basically a free coffee shop with day old muffins and what not. You would stand in line and sit down to a table of four where the program people would serve you a cup of Joe and a few muffins. I would hang out at Pioneer Square playing speed chess in the summer and watching the free shows at times playing speed chess. Free Water Fountains all over the street and at that time the tram in the downtown area was free to ride. They changed that years ago I found out. Amazing Fireworks show and Free Blues concert during the 4th in the park. I took a trip with the Mission to the beach which was just beautiful. Portland is great... heck being homeless isn't as bad as you might think but for me it was a choice. I wouldn't think it would be so great if you had a family and lost your job and everything and found yourself on the street but honestly in this country it is pretty tough not to climb your way out of the gutter.

I think AxelWolf said it best... you can teach a monkey to play machines but it is another thing to make a monkey into a Professional AP.

What's your beef by the way Bill Yung? Let's air this out? Why have your last few remarks toward me been hostile trying to make me crack. I've learned to be more resilient to attacks on forums after my banishing from WoV.

It isn't a terrible idea but the problem is that if I donate the bags to an organization the "good stuff" never gets to the homeless or the people I am trying to give it to. This is why, what I do, is I buy a bunch of high quality food items and make lunch sacks and bring different drinks to the street. I also hand out tracks with 2 to 5 dollars inside of them. I have always done my own hand to hand combat when donating my goods or time to the homeless which is usually the only way I give back. I will never give anything to an organization.

I had to comment on this as it brought back memories. I have also eaten at the Palms buffet since it opened, and it has gone back and forth wildly. I haven't tried this new incarnation, but I'll give it a whirl in early February. I miss the old self serve coffee/hot cocoa/espresso machine, too. Always took a cup to go.

Also, I remember as a young man trying to decide which buffet was worse -- the Boardwalk or Circus-Circus. And I decided Boardwalk was the worst buffet in Las Vegas. I think the breakfast buffet at the old Sun-something downtown was bad, also, but Boardwalk edged them out.

    Thanks for the memories.

Which are the better buffets these days?

I assume Bellagio and Wynn are at or near the top.

Wicked Spoon at Cosmo and the Baccanal at Caesar’s Palace are both good. Both are big on the small prepared plates as opposed to everyone grabbing out of a steam table.

Without regard to price, I think the Wynn is the best, although to my uncultured mind, it's really not a "buffet." I'm biased to the Paris breakfast buffet with crepes made to order. Planet Hollywood for lunch used to be a favorite of mine (Middle Eastern dishes done well), but they've backtracked a bit. I have not done the Bellagio.

I think, value-wise, the buffets at Gold Coast and Orleans are good on "non-special" nights. Specialty nights are overpriced. Orleans buffet has been renovated. I do not recommend the Orleans for breakfast, but lunch and dinner are fine. Gold Coast has a serviceable breakfast. I did the Harrah's buffet for lunch last time. Modest layout -- you get your own drinks -- but the food was really fresh. Drawback was a $25 price tag for lunch.

Downtown -- if you're looking for a beautiful workspace and a place to wake up for the day, Main Street has a lovely buffet room. Food is just okay, but it's a really good-looking space. The Fremont has a 1950's-vibe combination buffet/coffee shop. It's a good place to time travel to Las Vegas 1955.

Oh yes, Red Rock has Stations Casino buffet prices, but the food and layout are better. Very nice.

Don't take it personally, monet. This site has a large anti-AP group and bias. And it is really weird. When we get rid of one, either by banning or they just quit another one pops up to fill the void, sniping and taking shots at the various AP's on the site in an attempt to discredit them. And the weird part is it isn't necessarily a new handle that joins to fill that void, often it is a handle or member that has been on the site for some time but mostly dormant. It's like it is their turn to wake up and come up to bat. I have a couple theories about this, but am not going to go there right now. So it's just your turn. You are new and because you are knowledgeable and share some experiences, you are a target right now.

Yeah, I posted about buffets, so I halfway expect Singer or a sockpuppet to go on about his tenth rant explaining that since I eat in buffets, I must be a low-class make-believe sports bettor who can't possibly bet thousands of dollars on sports. There are strange assumptions that say more about the anti's than the AP's. Some people post if you play video poker for quarters, you must be a low roller or not a "real player" (as one dude likes to say) in general. Another long-time poster, whose actual data/informational contributions can be summed up in about half a dozen lines, uses the mantra that if you're incorrect or lie about one thing, everything you say is suspect. He basically never says much of anything, so his rep stays clean, at least in his mind.

Anyway, monet, thanks for the memories.

The homeless AP is an interesting concept. We know mickeycrimm's very interesting story. Few, if any generate the kind of success that mickey has. But at both locations that were my primary rotations for a number of years, first Atlantic City and now Vegas, I have witnessed a significant group of homeless, at least quazi-AP's. they are playing some things with an advantage. Maybe they play more at a disadvantage and that I why they are stuck where they are, or maybe they drink away their profits, or maybe just food and "housing" costs, eats up their small profits.

In AC, this group often rode the buses back and forth from Philly and NYC to Atlantic City, playing the bus bonus game among other things. In Vegas, you will see some of the same people, usually white guys in their 40's, 50's, 60's. at many promotions and small AP type plays (I don't know why it's "white" guys, but just seems to be). They are big on abusing coupon plays. I think that used to be a bigger thing in Vegas years ago, and that's why many of those coupon deals dried up. Some of the things they do are just regular promos, like the Boyd Wedensday senior promo, 50 points gets you a free breakfast or lunch buffet and 150 points gets you a second free dinner buffets. That is an actual cost of less than a dollar. Just many, many low limit hustles or deals that cost pennies.

If you listen to these guys you will hear that they are not the "traditional homeless", sleeping in the drain tunnels or sidewalks. They often pull resources and share comped rooms, and even lower end paid motel rooms or weekly. And often their belongings are in one backpack or bag that they carry with them. So it is sort of a step up from really "homeless". I find it sort of interesting....from a distance.

Hostility? Crack? Target? To list only a few.

Wtf are you guys talking about? All I'm seeing is a bunch of nostalgia and feeling sorry for yourselves. Is this like a deap-seated gambler psyche or archetype? Always talking about childhood experiences, television and food from years ago, old rivilaries and theories, etc. Time shares? Another dinosaur from past decades.

On my walk home, today, it hit me that AM spells Nelson Mandela. How cool is that. I was running some new physics models through my head, and that popped out. Yes, silly as it is, it is new and fresh.

And btw, when some new guy spouts off about joining an illegal baccarat team with dealers, I have to laugh and call BS. You would literally poop your pants? And, yes, 'knowable' is a word. Why wouldn't it be?

Now that I think about it, perhaps the AP's suffer from not realizing what they don't know, and then going on to think they know more than most. How will they rationalize the fall of this site?

You might be right. I am older now. I dunno I made a pretty good living skimming off the Casino for years and I never told anyone that I have always wanted to be part of a Baccarat Team. I was told long ago that nothing is illegal if you don't get caught. Perhaps that isn't true. I only mentioned it because some guy was all upset about nobody wanting to talk about a Phony Baccarat System and I figured that perhaps someone on this board would have interest in a Team. Heck I have asked forums before if they want to get together with a poker crew but nobody responded to that as well. As a matter of fact I would only get involved with poker again if I was on a crew working together.

After your post I get it though... don't post about the past. Don't feel sorry for myself. Don't talk about timeshares. Don't warn other players about Heat. Don't talk about Television or Movies. No old rivalry talk. Don't talk about food or Buffets in Vegas. These are some pretty tight handcuffs. I am not sure what topic to bring up next but I will try to think of something better that is in your wheelhouse. Although Physics is too advanced for me so I am not sure we can find common ground.

LOL -- pretty good response there, monet. Somehow I doubt Mr. Yung has a PhD. Just a guess from someone who hangs with people who do.

I'll try to restrict posts to world affairs and research regarding the illusory nature of volition. It may not belong on a vegascasinotalk board, but Mr. Yung may approve.

I admit it... I had to look up illusory nature of volition.

I ended up reading a short summary and since I never graduated high school my reading comprehension just isn't strong enough to understand what I just read 3 times.

I read it again this time and it seems we are talking about Free Will or the definition of it and how it works in the brain?

The idea of free will is a conscious awareness of the brain concerning the nature of the movement that it produces. There is no evidence for it to be a driving force in movement generation. This review considers the physiology of movement generation and how the concepts of willing and agency might arise. Both the anatomical substrates and the timing of events are considered. Movement initiation and volition are not necessarily linked, and one line of evidence comes from consideration of patients with disorders of volition. Movement is generated subconsciously, and the conscious sense of willing the movement comes later, but the exact time of this event is difficult to assess because of the potentially illusory nature of introspection. The evidence suggests that movement is initiated in frontal lobe, particularly the mesial areas, and the sense of volition arises as the result of a corollary discharge from premotor and motor areas likely involving the parietal lobe. Agency probably involves a similar region in the parietal lobe and requires both the sense of volition and movement feedback.

Perhaps William Yung can enlighten myself and others on this forum who now have a new found interest in this topic?

For the Record... if you read my post to Maxpen on the Westgate thread you would realize that I admitted that I was far behind most AP's and that I certainly do not have good enough information to trade. As a matter of fact I have posted on WoV that my normal hourly is 20 dollars per hour and that most of what I do is considered grinding. Such is Life in general I suppose. This doesn't mean that I haven't found or been on great plays that have netted me 5 and 6 figures over time but for the most part it is a grueling lifestyle for me earning an average of 20 dollars per hour. However, one advantage is being able to eat for free but I don't want to upset you talking about food again. I suppose it isn't eating for free, it is more so a perk that goes along with the grind.

I first read Bill Yung's post on my cell phone. And I was like...."WHAT?" I though maybe I was missing something because I was reading it on a small screen.

But NO! Not the case. It makes just as little sense on my laptop. Alan Mendelson spells Nelson Mandela....THAT should have been a clue. Actually, maybe the bigger clue was the second word of the post.....CRACK! Me thinks Mr. Yung has been smoking too much crack.

More important to you, how will you rationalize YOUR fall from this site. You make nothing but troll posts. Dan has a history of banning those that make only troll posts. You are on short time here so make the most of it. Troll away.
