Thread: Hey wait....where's Alan?

Oh that's right, he is throwing a tantrum because MrV has been mean to him dating back years. Give it up Alan. MrV...play nice. Let's see some kindergarten report cards from you guys. "Dosen't play nice with others!"

Hey Alan, I am taking a "vacation" day today. Guess why? Won to much this week. Hey isn't that some sort of stop limit? A win limit? Nope....I don't do stop limits...win or loss.

inb4 Alan says he was out gambling and hit 3 royals back to back for $400k each.

Do you mean 18 royals in a row?

So Alan, I had back to back 5 figure days this week. Both barely just 5 figures. These days are rare at my mid level of play. I guess I get 5-8 a year. So it is very rare to have two such days back to back. Because of my limited rotation, I decided to take an extra day off (long weekend) for heat reasons. Had nothing to do with winning, so it's not a stop limit.

But THIS is the part, you might find interesting Alan: the result of these two winning days...which is taking a day off, makes this negative EV 'long-term' result. A day off means less "accumulated EV" for the year. Come on Alan, surely you have something to say about that!

He doesn’t understand what expected value or advantage play is. Stop trying.

All this gives new meaning to wising up a sucker. Not that Alan is a sucker, of course.

But then think about what it would be like to debate an issue where you say you dont believe something to be true.....and the retort will always be....."says the man who saw 18 yos in a row" or "says the man who saw 18 yos in a row and didnt place even a DOLLAR chip on it"

that is the position he put himself in. Thats the bed he made for himself.

Sure I would like to see him back....the more the merrier......but geez....he made it really tough for himself.

He can blame MrV all he wants...But in the end he has to look in the mirror.

he shot his own credibility in the foot....making what he says going forward easily questioned.

WOW!! What's the point of making a thread just for the purpose of bating someone back? If that doesn't cry,I love drama, I don't know what does.

Sorry KJ, but this makes no logical sense to me other than you are bored and need some extra drama.

So I see Alan really has been taking a break from the forum.

He is welcome to come back when he likes.

Dealing with the "Alan situation" has been a bit tough for me, since I took over this pace from him 2 years ago.

On one hand, I personally like Alan (even though we've had our disagreements). I also respect the fact that he started this forum over 7 years ago, and actively posted on it and kept it going (even after he no longer owned it).

I don't want to be the dickhead who says, "It's mine now, Alan, so you're just a regular user now like everyone else."

I feel Alan deserves more respect than that. If it weren't for him, none of us would be posting here, as this forum wouldn't exist.

However, at the same time, Alan states his opinions very strongly, even when they are backed up by very dubious "facts" or beliefs. So I really don't want to get in the middle of it when Alan gets into intense arguments because people don't agree with his strongly-worded posts. I've always felt that, if you intentionally enter the lion's den of internet controversy, you can't complain when things get heated.

I do insist that there is a degree of civility in the treatment of Alan here. Even if you strongly disagree with him or dislike him, I don't want to see overly harsh personal attacks, nor do I want to see potentially harmful statements about his business or ethics, both of which could have a negative impact on his life outside the forum.

So I have to disallow stuff like that, but at the same time, allow for reasonably angry words to be aimed in his direction when he willingly gets involved in heated discussions.

If you look at Alan's posting history, you will see that he has written many critical things of me over the years, and I've never taken it personally. At the same time, I'm never hesitant to call out Alan when he posts something I feel is incorrect.

I guess you are talking about me and the use of the term "shyster". I hate to give up that term, because I believe it exemplifies Alan to a T. He intentionally manipulates things, people, pictures, words. It is pure dishonesty. And I am not the only one that has used those exact words "that he manipulates". BUT, out of respect for you, I will refrain from using it.

Jesus that must of kept you busy. Calling out things Alan says that are incorrect and false, would be a fulltime job.

I'm sure I'll have a long, boring, multi-chapter tutorial on Mr. Mendelson one of these days, but here's a rambling Cliff Notes version.

First, Arcimede$ and I deserve some kind of medals of honor for holding the rationality fort against Alan and Rob Singer for years. Now that there are some actual APs and people with some math training here, Arci and I are not necessary.

I never figured Alan out. I have a background in journalism, and Alan is a respected journalist with many noted accomplishments. That doesn't absolve him from presenting errant personal speculations as having merit without consulting a probability prof, and it also doesn't absolve him from the dubious although brilliant strategy of using a variant of Consumer Reports' established "Best Buys" as the title of his show/site. It suggests at least the veneer of a Consumer Reports style of analysis, but it's the furthest thing from it. Brilliant, really.

My point of departure with Mr. Mendelson was his relationship with Rob Singer. I have no idea if Mr. Mendelson had or has an ongoing contractual relationship of some kind with casinos or Singer. That would explain much. But maybe that's too rational of an explanation. The tipping point for me was when Rob somehow felt his dominant posting position on Alan's forum was threatened by me and started claiming I wasn't me. It was very weird and easily disproven. Alan, in what appeared to be a moment of impulse, said I should send him my bio stuff and such. It may not have been impulsivity. He may have been testing to see if I'd actually do it. When I responded with a "Yay!", he immediately reversed course and didn't want to read or see it.

Since that point, Mr. Mendelson has done things that are increasingly tilt-ish and mean spirited. The running to the casinos and taking blurry photos with an "Aha! I caught you!" regarding kewlJ. Months later, I went and eyeballed and tape measured the tables. Visually, it can be done. But Mr. Mendelson never re-tested his photos with his eyeballs or a tape measure in the intervening months. I wonder why. Then he decided I had misled the forum by not proclaiming my "having clients." Another weird "I got you! Aha!" moment. He evidently never stopped to figure out that someone monitored for decades in something called "Tipsters or Gypsters?" or in something called "The Wise Guys Contest" was a professional. Now Mr. Mendelson simply cannot be that stupid if he actually read my posts, and if he didn't read my posts, why would he even comment?

This latest stuff with Singer and "girlfriday." I got a kick out of it. Mr. Mendelson went to bat for girlfriday and Singer -- at least until I explained I had been informed that Singer had been booted from the LVA forum for posing as a mortgage broker. Quite an (aha! I caught you!) ironic moment. Mr. Mendelson, in my opinion, knew what was going on.

Mr. Mendelson then excused himself from the table. Somewhere Mr. Mendelson went off the tracks, and I think Singer being exposed as a "mortgage broker" after Mr. Mendelson stood up for Singer and "girlfriday" finally ended it.

Thanks for holding down the fort redietz...the calvary has now arrived. But you and Arci ARE still necessary. It is important that people call out Alan's nonsense. The more the better. I want him to be on an island, isolated, simply because it is my hope that he will realize that it is him that is wrong and not everyone else. But really, I think Alan already realizes that in many of these situations. He is too smart a man not to know that. But he refuses to acknowledge it.

I don't dislike Alan. I don't know him, except for a few months of interacting on this forum. But I do HATE his agenda. He in cahoots with Singer has an agenda to discredit AP's. No ifs ands or buts about it. I don't know what that's about, but it is a real thing. And even with Singer gone from the site, Alan was still taking his ques from Singer. You can tell because some of the things he says aren't even his words. They are word for word (minus some obscenities) the words of Singer.

The girlfriday thing was a fiasco for Alan. I think he is embarrassed and should be, so he manufactured a reason to leave (MrV has picked on him for years...so what).

If someone is "x" then what is wrong with calling him "x"? If that hurts that person's reputation, wouldn't that be a good thin, since that person's reputation is better than it should be? For example, a con artist shouldn't have the reputation of being honest and fair, if his reputation drops to the level of a con artist, then that is a good thing. Of course, that's based on the things being said are true and not made up.

Fun as it has been, at times arguing with Alan was like wrestling a pig; you get dirty but the pig loves it.

Then again, sometimes it was sort of like wresting a tar baby.

He was intellectually dishonest. You could make a point, that is rock solid in reality, and he would respond in a way that had no logic to it,

For example, he was arguing why would an AP keep betting and not stop with a loss limit.

Someone gave the example that something to the effect...that if he were to bet on a coin flip....and everytime he won he got +120, and if he lost 10 flips in a row....why would he stop when he had such favorable odds going forward,

His answer was NOT.....I see your point but this is where I dont see how it applies...or this is where it falls apart.

    NOPE

his response was.....I dont bet on coinflips.

How the heck can you debate someone so intellectually dishonest. He knew full well that no one was asking if he spends his time betting coin flips. Who the heck spends their days betting coin flips. So really hoe can you have an adult exchange with someone like that.

Isn't it obvious? Alan left the WoV forum, years ago, and this one has become the prodigal son version.

Some people never grow up, and the others grow old too fast. In the twilight zone from one to the other, mysteries stay mysteries as the old soul stays young at heart. Say, the very rare creative personality type that is the playful professor. Puff the Magic Dragon. Alan in Wonderland. Where the two-dice problem, Singer's system, and eighteen yo's can harbor a deeper meaning.
