Thread: Roadtrip Question for MickeyCrimm

I have enjoyed your roadtrip photos and reports during the last year. I'll be making the cross country drive via Route 40 in a couple of months. Are there any must-see casinos along the way? And if just stopping for lunch or dinner, do you have any favorites along the route? I'll be traveling with companions, so I will be steering clear of places like The Golden Pony, which I suspect turns into something like the Titty Twister after dark.

I'll probably stop at the El Rancho in Gallup again as that is one of my favorite places, but any other interesting recommendations, casino or not, would be great.

It's a pretty dull drive through Oklahoma on I-40. One detour you might consider is a side trip though the Ozark Mountains. From Memphis drive up to Jonesboro, then over to Fayetteville, then south to Fort Smith and back on I-40. The I-40 and I-25 interchange is at Albuquerque. You might want to visit the largest casino in the area, Sandia. It's on I-25 about 8 miles north of the interchange. Take the Tramway Road exit off I-25. One of the things I want to do the next time I'm in Albuquerque is take the Sandia Peak Tramway to the Top of Sandia Mountain which overlooks Albuquerque. It's at the end of Tramway Road.

Another interesting thing to see is the lights of Albuquerque if you are driving through at night. From certain points on I-40 you can see the whole valley and all the lights of the town. There have even been a few songs written about it.

"More importantly, mickey thought 8-4 was two games over .500. Argued about it. C'mon, man. Nothing can top that for math expertise. If GWAE ever has you on again, you can be sure I'll be calling in with that gem.'Nuff said." REDIETZ

I was visiting a buddy in Albuquerque in 1975; he asked if I wanted to check out Sandia Peak, I said sure.

He fired up his mid-sixties Vette and masterfully drove absolutely balls to the wall from bottom to top, power sliding merrily as we went.

    Oh, what a feeling.

Since this is west to east, I'll do an overnight in Albuquerque the second night and catch the night view. My late wife's sister lived in Albuquerque. I was out there for the balloon festival maybe 25 years ago. I will check out Sandia. It will be leisurely, just 300 or 350 miles a day. Last time I went east to west, I covered 850 miles the first day, and that was a long way driving solo. Thanks, guys.

I wasn't' aware there was road you could drive to the top of Sandia. I'll have to check it out.

Driving from west to east you will definitely see the lights of Albuquerque. That is, if you are driving at night.
