Initially, when Mission posted his link to the other website, I though he was using numbers to support a cause. I was wrong. All he has been doing is using math to state that an event is mathematically possible. Period.

Personally, the phrase I love to use is that the event is possible but improbable (jeez, does that cover both arguments?).

If we asked TV/Movie characters about this subject; Spock would state, "Highly unlikely.", while Archie Bunker and Dirty Harry would say, "Impossible.". Individuals can pick their favorite response.

Then again, 120 years ago if the argument was about landing a man on the moon, the mathboys would say, "Highly unlikely.", while others would state it is impossible as no one can get something in the air for 100 yards.

Personally, there are many things stated on this forum that takes time for me to digest, but math is not one of them.

I do not care about what could have occurred at the craps table, I care about ignoring the math, even if you disagree with it.

this goes back years ago when alan could not hide behind "mis-remembering". He was called out when he mentioned it..and he chose not to back down so he is stuck with this lying story. Sometimes you have to fold em. He never did. Instead of folding he doubled down and stormed away from wov as if to say...fuck everyone if they dont want to believe me.
When in reality...he made his own bed and he knew it. A bed mad for lying.

I don't really know how it started, to be quite honest. I don't know which forum was the first upon which he made his claim, nor do I know how long after the supposed event occurred that he made the first such claim on a forum.

Let's consider this: What other condition would cause someone to storm away from a place and say, "Fuck them if they don't believe me."? I know, if you think you're telling the truth. If you think you're telling the truth and you have a bunch of people accusing you of lying, eventually you're going to say, "Fuck those people."

So then if the percent of not rolling 18 yos in a row out of 100 of rolling 18 yos in a row is 99.99999999999999999999 against......Its ok to round up. Its just that in instances like this sane people know its ok to round up. The math boys like you will agonize over that .0000000000000000000001 as if its important in the real world.

It is important in the real world. It's the difference between a thing literally not being able to happen and a possibility that a thing could happen, has happened or can happen.

You worked in the medical field, in general terms, so I'll take for granted that you have a passing knowledge of how that works. Imagine if there were no known fatalities associated with a specific medical procedure. Now, imagine two parents who take their child in for this medical procedure and the surgeon counsels them and says, "It is impossible for there to be a fatality as a result of this procedure."

But then, for the first time ever, a child dies as a direct result of the procedure. Imagine the parents can prove the doctor said, "Impossible." Now the parents say they only agreed to the procedure due to the surgeon's consultation in which he said a fatality is, "Impossible." Those parents are going to sue the shit out of that surgeon, and quite probably win. Again, assuming proof that the surgeon said, "Impossible," and that the death was a direct result of the surgery.

Now, you might say a surgeon would never use a word like, "Impossible." A surgeon would say, "Anything is possible." In my opinion, a good surgeon (or at least one who wanted to cover his ass) would use very specific language like, "There has never been a fatality, to this point, associated with this procedure."

And, that is because words have meaning.

Oh yeah in the world of numbers you can have an orgasm discussing the value of that infinitesimal amount...you can argue about it and talk about all the possibilities, calculate it out, make a portfolio of possibilities and probabilities.

In the world of not being a fucking idiot, yes, words have meaning.

While sane people go through the day having rounded up and moving on to draw real conclusions based on reality that matters...not based on mathematical insignificant shit

The difference between possible and impossible is, effectively, whether a being or event can exist, have existed or has the future capability to exist.

Look at outer space. How many planets are we aware of that do not have the necessary conditions to sustain humans? I can tell you this, it easily rounds up to 100%. Does that make humans impossible?

Anyway, if you don't want words to have meaning, go talk to someone else. We can't have a debate on equal terms. When I debate, I at least try to do it in such a way that words mean something.

I'm not calling Alan insane, but one example is that it can be argued that truly insane people are incapable of lying, though they may make many incorrect statements about physical reality.

Again, you should read on memories a little and the way the human brain works. I'm sure you have. If you have, then you are aware as I am that it has been found that people often misremember events in a way that is much more dramatic...even occasionally in terms of objective facts...than the event that actually occurred.

Once again, the way that I read Rob Singer's OP, which you might try doing again for context and comprehension, is that he accused me of not acknowledging the mathematical possibility of the event.

I then posted a very short post with a link informing Singer that I made the, "Mathematically possible," argument over five years ago.

I really had no further intent to participate in the thread (other than read it) until Half Smoke addressed me with his 500 Yo's question, at which point I maintained that such is one of many possible results in a five hundred roll set.

You were not satisfied with that and chose to attack that position. Why? I have no idea. I never once said I think Alan's story actually happened.

Anyway, that's the answer for why I posted the link in the first place, because my interpretation of Singer's post was that he was saying that I didn't acknowledge the proper math.

I disagree with her assertion, but I get where she's coming from, to an extent.
