Thread: Sportsbook question

  1. #1
I will be visiting Vegas in November and staying at the Linq. My questions are... Are all the sportsbooks super packed on Sunday? Do I need to get there at 7AM to get a seat. Any recommendations? Was thinking the Westgate or South Point. Thanks

First, a bit of trivia. Back in the Imperial Palace days of the 80's and 90's, the IP's sports book manager was the same Jay Kornegay who now helms the Westgate Superbook. Back then, it was rare to find Jay in a suit. The IP also opened its Legends in Concert showroom on Sundays for SB viewing. Great place for Sunday NFL.

To the present. The Westgate and South Point are two classic football choices. But because they are, you've gotta get there early. I have not watched Sundays at South Point, but I'm guessing 8 AM for a seat. At the Westgate, it may be hard to get a seat in the Superbook itself, what with so many reserved seats for higher rollers. They open one of the showrooms for viewing, however, so I would call to ask when that showroom actually opens for seating. I would head there for about 8 AM, anyway.

Also, since they recently folded the sports betting into the general comp program, be sure to visit the players' club to get a card if you're going to do some serious betting. Last time I was there, you could get a drink ticket for a $100 wager.

Thanks for the info..the last time I was in Vegas I stayed at the IP If it's really a big ordeal I may just hang at the Linq or a nearby casino.

I'll add one comment. The old ways still work when it comes to these type of things. Throw somebody behind the counter some $$$ to reserve a seat for you.

I was out in Vegas two weeks ago with my fraternity brother and part of this particular trip is to spend some time with another friend who takes one annual trip to Vegas with his father and HS buddy. Their trip (not mine) revolves around spending time at a nice strip hotel, with an above average pool, and spending Sunday at a nice sportsbook (without paying for a booth).

The last few years they had gone to MGM Grand. This time they went to Westgate. They loved it. They arrived fairly early and were fortunate to get three seats at the bar.

Westgate reserves the first three or four rows of viewing (not booths) for customers on a first come, first served basis (he did not know this). I am not sure if that is available at 7 or 8 AM. This is what my friend will be planning for next year's festivities. He is hooked on Westgate.

That Westgate bar is something, eh?

A couple of other notes: If you're interested in video poker, there is some 9/6 JoB video poker on a couple of banks behind the sports book near the walkway to the main casino. The retro buffet is next to the sports book. It's about $20 a pop. Also, the Benihana in the restaurant corridor is the nicest I've ever seen. You enter through a pseudo-Japanese village. And finally, for any hardcore APs who want to save a couple of bucks on a beer. The drinks are seven or eight bucks each. You get a drink ticket for every hundred in wagers. But if you have nothing you want to bet, I asked if you could plop down $50 on each side of the same game (thereby donating five bucks) and get a drink ticket. The ticket writer said yes, so I did it. Not sure if there's a formal rule these days, but worth a shot. LOL. I'm sure if Argentino reads this he'll go on one of his, "You don't bet any actual money if you do that kind of thing" rants. He would be incorrect.

Do you think I need to get there before 7 AM? It will just be myself and I want a seat that I'm able to see most the games.

No, no ,no. I talked to my buddy today and he said he could have gotten one of those seats in the sportsbook when he showed up but he did not know if he wanted to be in the "arena" or the sportsbook. He loved the sportsbook area. It may be prudent to show up early to decide in which area you want to view the games. I do not know what time my buddy arrived at Westgate but you should be good with an 8 AM arrival.
