I think he was also a substitute teacher. He picked up on AP'ing and built up a pretty good bankroll. He worked a lot of the video poker progressives on the river and employed others to play.

One time the royal on this bank of machines along the wall near the men's room got high. He threw his team on it. They were on it for a long time. The damn royal just wouldn't hit. He got buried for more than the royal was going to pay but the cheapest way out of a spot like that is to continue to play until you hit it. He started calling it the WALL OF PAIN.

They finally got the royal but he took a huge loss. He was well known by management and I guess the name stuck. They actually put up a sign calling it the WALL OF PAIN.

PS: Axel knows the guy. His initials are R.M.
Ya, hes a nice guy and very pleasant to hang with. He certainly knows what he is doing. I talk to him once in a while, but it's been a while.

That prog has been there for as long as I can remember. I would play it when the Aces got up of I happened to be in Laughlin at the time.

I'm not sure what the Pioneer plans on doing, but they better upgrade some of their VP. Did you happen to notice they didn't have one multiline game in the place? Sure, they should keep some of the old school stuff but they need to add some UX, low limit 50 play etc.

    P.S. No more Sigma there.

    Thanks Dan.

Mickey, I hope you continue on with your Laughlin trip report. You never mentioned anything about the Riverside casino. The Riverside is where I have to do all my machine play in order to build up enough points for a comped flight. On my last trip to Laughin I managed to breakeven at 9/6 JOB and still earn enough points for a free flight. Then I concentrate on blackjack to make my money.

Mickey, did you get a lot of comp offers from Laughlin yet. Just about every place will send some kind of an offer for a free room. On one of my trips there, I was saying at the Riverside, but walked down to to Golden Nugget and instead of walking back to the Riverside used a free room offer there and waited until early morning to head back.

I thought you mentioned once you are from Montana. For some reason the Riverside flight map is not showing any red dots for Montana, but the non flash version is showing an upcoming flight from Billings MT to Laughlin on Oct 28th. If you call them, they can tell you if you qualify for the free flight.

I checked the flights from Montana when you first put the link up. My next time in Laughlin I'll probably be driving as I spend time in the winter in close proximity to Laughlin.

At the Riverside the best dollar video poker is the NSUD (99.73%) that can be found in the North Tower bartops and there is a bank of four next to the gift shop. There is also dollar 9/6 Jacks (99.54%) just off the pit. And $5 9/6 Jacks in the Riverview bartops and North Tower bartops. I wanted to run a 30K wager to quickly make the Emerald card level so played the $5 9/6 Jacks for most of it then switched down to the NSUD.

    $5 in action = 1 point
6000 points = Emerald card level.

The slot card is worth .2% cashback/freeplay and .16% meal comp. Plus the Riverside has discretionary comp. You can cashout any points you have on the cashout kiosks located around the casino. Limited to $100 per day.

Things I like about the Riverside: Parking garage, cable television in the rooms, Don's Celebrity Theater with top name acts, bowling alley, several screen movie theater, large sports book, several dining options, large smoking and non-smoking casinos.

With the video poker games offered I think the Riverside is a pretty good deal. I'll have to wait to see what the mail brings. It looks like there might be some changes to the players club on 1 Feb 2019.

Another restaurant that caught my eye was Guy Fieri's El Burro Burracho at Harrah's. Guy bill's it as "Nacho Average Taco Joint." The salsa was so so, chips a little different than anything I had seen before. The taco's, rice and beans were good. I like the little stand the taco's were on that made them easy to grab. What I didn't like was the price, $26 with tip.

I got my first piece of mail from my Laughlin trip. The Pioneer just re-opened the hotel. The November Special is two nights for $38-Sunday thru Thursday-Receive $40 in Freeplay.

I forgot to cover the Laughlin River Lodge. Dotty's owns the place now and there is even a Dotty's casino located where the old bingo room was. Its actually a pretty interesting looking place now. The downstairs in now a bowling alley and restaurant. And a part of the main floor is set up like a Dave & Buster's. It looks like they are going for a younger crowd. There were some hot chicks in the joint, Dan.

I searched their video poker inventory for something close. vpFREE2 lists NSUD but I didn't find any. Consequently I didn't run any action to see what they would send me. They have a few vulturables.

All my free flights have been with the Riverside casino. I use a combination of blackjack and video poker to get the free flights. I wasn't getting free flights until I started playing some video poker. Machine play will get you free flights faster than blackjack. I think I'm just on the border line of qualifying for free flights, but in the last two months I qualified for two free flights which I turned down. A lot depends on how full the flight is to qualify for a free flight. They will lower the standard to qualify if the plane is not very full. In fact, once I called and they said I only qualify for half fare rate, but the plane was not very full so the lady told me to call back in a week or two and they will probably lower the standard, and that is what I did and got the free flight.

I never ever got an offer in the mail for a free flight from the Riverside. They like to see if the plane fills up first, but in the last week I did get a phone call from them offering me and a guest a free flight and room. However, don't wait for them to call you. Call them and ask if you qualify for a free flight from where you want to fly from. It can be from any city they offer flights from. On a free flight, you can cancel up to two weeks from flight date. If you cancel after that I think there is something like a $25 or maybe $50 charge. Anyway, not much.

Oh, almost forgot. I think on video poker I earned only about 500 or 600 points. I don't remember for sure. I think $5 in play gets you one point so I probably ran $2,500 to $3,000 through the machine. Then add to that maybe 10 hours of blackjack play on $10 to $25 min tables. Most of the folks on my flights had either reduced or free flights and they are primary machine players.

$38 a night is an outrageous price for a hotel in Laughlin. One thing Laughlin is good for is its inexpensive hotel rooms. If you are paying $38 for a hotel room at the Pioneer you are getting ripped off. Go to Expedia and check out the rates on hotel rooms. You can get a hotel room for $18 a night (weekday) at Harrahs and $20 a night at Pioneer and that is for no prior play. Heck, you can get a hotel room at one of the nicer casinos like Aquarius for only $31 a night.

Sounds kind of like Vegas 10-12 years ago, MWP.

I moved to Vegas in 2009, and in the 3-4 years prior to that I made 3 trips or so a year. Prices on the strip for the lower end places like Imperial palace were like $19 during the week. Slightly higher were flamingo, harrahs, ballys in the $29-$39 range. This was pre- resort fees.

Conventional wisdom among some AP's at the time was you tune down your spread (so as not to get backed off) and give 3-4 hours play for a comped room. I did this once and then took a look at the math. Toning down my spread was costing me like $40/hour from my normal EV rate, so it was costing me $160 in EV to get that $29-$39 comped room. No thank you. From that time on, I just played my regular spread and paid for my own damn room.

Now if prices were higher, as they are today in Vegas and comped rooms included comped resort fees (as they did for a while....not sure about currently), then that toning down spread might be a beneficial strategy.

Anyway, just seeing the prices you posted and amount of play required at fairly low limits reminded me of my early years.

I think Caesars still comps resort fees for Seven Stars and sometimes for Diamond players. But verify this as o haven't been to a Caesars property since New Year's.

It's $38 for two nights, which is $19 per night. And you get $40 freeplay which can be run off on the video blackjack that is right at 100% with the card. This makes the rooms essentially free. I have a friend staying there 4 nights a week.

My wife is Diamond Club for Caesars properties. They still comp the resort fees.

Quick question for everybody: I'm going to pick two locations to pump in some money. I'll be in Laughlin for 24-36 hours. I want the priorities to be good games and probable offers down the road. I figure Aquarius will be one. Suggestions for the second?

If you think this is a good deal by Laughlin standards it's not. The Pioneer is rated as the worst hotel in all of Laughlin, and if this dump can't at least comp a couple of free nights like all the other places do, it isn't saying much for the place.

All the places I have played rated in Laughlin have offered me free rooms. The Riverside has offered me free flight and room packages. All the places except for the Riverside, I didn't give any machine play, just blackjack. I have stayed at Aquarius and Golden Nugget on totally free room comps and had free room offers from Tropicana and Harrahs with only blackjack play. Speaking of Harrahs, just recently I received an offer for two night Sun-Thur free stay along with a dinning credit for Laughlin. I haven't played at Harrahs in Lauglin in over 3 years and then it was only for a couple of hours of blackjack.

Machine play should earn much better comps than blackjack. I'm kind of curious what other comp offers you received?
