Thread: Two men banned from all Nevada casinos due to 2012-14 craps scam at Bellagio

They were making "hop bets", where the player bets on the numbers on each die. Here's an explanation of hop bets: https://www.888casino.com/blog/craps.../craps-hop-bet

The scam involved collusion with a craps dealer. Since there is no place on the craps felt for a hop bet to be made, the bet is verbalized after placing chips on the felt, and it's up to the dealer to fairly pay it. It's one of very few bets at Vegas table games which are not explicitly clear by where the chips are on the felt.

The player would say "hop bet" and mumble something that sounds like numbers, and then whatever lands, the dealer will pretend to have heard those numbers, and pay the players.

The article says that the guys hit a "452 billion to 1" bet, but that's not possible on hop bets, are there are only 36 possible combinations on 2 dice.

I'm guessing the 452-billion-to-1 thing was the fact that they won a super-improbable succession of bets where the odds were 1-in-36 each.

They were arrested and convicted already, but the bans just came down this week.

Since this happened many casinos have changed their crap layouts to actually have places for the hop bets.

Station Casinos, Boyd casinos, and all Caesars casinos have layouts now with the hop bets. I don't know about the MGM properties.

Hop bets have different probabilities. Hitting 12 is a 1/36 chance but is paid 30 for one. 11 is a one out of 18 chance but is paid 15 for one. If you "hop" a six, you must specify the exact combination. 4/2 and 5/1 are paid 15. But 3/3 is paid 30.

The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good.
    Greed is right, greed works.
Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit.
Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind...
and Greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper but that other malfunctioning corporation called The USA.

    LOL quahaug!

Public’s out there throwing darts at a board, sport – I don’t throw darts at a board. I bet on sure things. Read Sun-Tzu, The Art of War. Every battle is won, before it is ever fought. Think about it. You’re not as smart as I thought you were buddy boy. Ever wonder why fund managers can’t beat the S&P 500? ‘Cause they’re sheep — and sheep get slaughtered. I’ve been in this business since ’69. Most of these Harvard MBA types – don’t add up to dog shit. Give me guys that are poor, smart and hungry. And no feelings. You win a few, you loose a few… but you keep on fighting . . . and if you need a friend, get a dog . . . it’s trench warfare out there Pal.
