Thread: Mt. Charleston weather and snow report

  1. #1
Mt. Charleston is a mountain about 45 minutes from Las Vegas, by car. It's northwest of Vegas, and is around 30 degrees colder during most times of year. It can be nice to visit in the summer to get away from the sweltering heat. In the winter, they have snow, and even a small ski resort called Lee Canyon.

One challenge I had during the winter was trying to figure out if there was snow on the ground This was important because I liked taking my son up there to play in the snow, but it wasn't worth the drive if there was barely any of it.

I recently found a site with both a webcam and weather/snow report for the 8,000 foot level. There are some places you can drive to around 8700 feet, so that part should have a little more snow.

    But here it is...

    Weather forecast: https://mtcharlestonweather.com/forecast/

Timelapse webcam last 24 hours (great for seeing the way the snow looks): https://mtcharlestonweather.com/timelapse/

Snow level at 8000 feet: https://mtcharlestonweather.com/live-snow-conditions/

Live webcam (turns off at night): https://mtcharlestonweather.com/webcam/

The Ellis family from Ellis Island purchased the Mt Charleston Lodge this year and is planning on putting a good deal of money in it. I have never visited it, but it is in my future plans once they fully get it up and running.

I know how some people feel about Casino Owners and such, but the Ellis's are good people and are now bringing their daughters in to the business to ensure they continue to grow the business for future generations. And they still offer decent locally brewed beer at a good price.

I really enjoy Lee Canyon snow boarding and skiing. AND Snow TUBING. Fun for all ages. Last year, myself, my brother (mid 30's and late 20's) and my mother and late partner (who were/are in their 50's) went snow tubing 3 times. I was surprised at how much fun my mother and late partner had. And there were many others in their age group laughing and enjoying themselves. It really is a good fun for all.

My brother and I also went snow boarding several times, once probably just a little to soon after my heart surgery. But no harm, no foul.

The best part is that it is close enough to enjoy but 40 minutes later, we are back in the valley and temps in the 60's.

    Ellis Island Good People?
They threw out almost every AP they could years ago.
I had to constantly duck and dodge the place when it had Full Pay Machines everywhere with good promotions.
They were nipping at my heels with the Coin/FP Promotion.

2005 had some amazing snow for skiing.
Unfortunately in January an avalanche killed a 13 year old boy and the place had to shut down.
The avalanche followed a winter storm that dumped 8 feet of snow in 2 days.
The mountain usually receives 10 feet of snow in an entire season.
The events of January 2005 were of an unprecedented magnitude that could not be predicted.
I have been going up there for over 20 years.

I never thought of bringing my skis to Las Vegas.

Tahoe maybe, but not Las Vegas.
    What, Me Worry?

Lee Canyon isn't worth visiting as a destination. The resort is small and the skiing isn't that good.

However, if you live in the Vegas area, it's the only option anywhere nearby.

You can drive 300 miles to Mammoth and have much better skiing.

Monet, Merry Christmas. Iím looking at it from a business owner standpoint. No different from buying a pizza, beer or bag of weed. Of course they are in business to make a living. And Of course every business is in it to make money. But in the overall casino industry they are good people.

If you bring in 5 free Big Mac coupons with the purchase of a drink every week, i donít want your business.

And face it, most of their customers donít care. They are locals, happy to have a place with cheap food, beeband gaming. They donít want you, me or anyone smart enough to take advantage of anything they offer.

And in the spirit of Christmas maybe Iím wrong about you. Thanks for all the information you have put out there.

You can go skiing and it roughly takes you an hour from house to slope.
You can run up to Tahoe or Cali or Utah and find much better skiing.
This is if you want to take time out of your hectic life and drive many hours and miles.

Mt Charleston offers skiing to an individual or family who can get it all done in one day.
The slopes are enough exercise for myself and others in my age range.
They offer a decent season pass that cuts down on your cost if you use it.
In 2005 I had the pass and the snow was unreal.
Avalanche hit and they shut down but they reimbursed everyone.
You either got prorated or a full refund depending on when you purchased.
The skiing was unreal that year.
If you live in Vegas, Mt Charleston is a nice get away in the winter to enjoy some snow.
It is a good spot to run up to when the summer hits as well since you can get 70 degree weather when it is 115 in Vegas.

Almost 14 years later... New Lift... Fresh Man Made Snow...

Well I wasn't suggesting that Lee Canyon was a top notch Ski resort. I was sort conveying what Monet just said. Less than an hour outside of Vegas, you can go skiing and other fun snow activities. I am not really a skier. I grew up 10 minutes from Daytona beach. Not a lot of skiing going on there. I was a surfboard boy. I never even saw snow until I moved to Philadelphia as a young adult.

Like I said, both my brother and I practically grew up in the surf at Daytona. Snowboarding is fairly similar (similar skills) to skiing, so we enjoy a bit of snowboarding at Lee Canyon. I suppose top notch ski enthusiasts wouldn't find Lee Canyon to their liking.

Good beer and bbq close to the strip for sure a good value for that.

Casino side there’s a quite alarming story from a gambling with an edge episode with rxgamble (part 2) about 14-15 minutes in regarding multiple Ellis island employees involved in the assault and illegal detainment of a 24 year old woman/patron. Perhaps it can be attributed to poor training or a random poor hiring choice, but it happened is fair criticism and reflects on the business.
