Thread: Fontainebleau

  1. #1
Recently sold, Fontainebleau, or what I call "the big blue monster", is once again in the news, with a new completion date of 2020 ad a new name of "The Drew" oddly named after the new owners dead son.

The story also suggests that Resorts World as Vegas, just up the street also now has a completion target date of 2020. Color me skeptical that either project will open in 2020. I'll put the odds of both projects opening in 2020 at about the same as 18 y.o.'s in a row. But if it were to happen, somewhere in that timeframe, it could be the beginning of the long awaited North strip revival. Again, after a decade of hearing this talk, I am in permanent "I'll believe it when I see it" mode.

Named after a young man who OD'd at 22 on OxyContin?

Well now, that's the new Las Vegas, baby!

Will "Drew" experience the same fate as Henry Ford's epic fail named after his son, "Edsel?"
    What, Me Worry?

    Any updates on this eyesore?

Absolutely none. Looks worse than ever. Sitting there fenced off with pieces literally falling off it.

Meanwhile, Resorts World across the street is starting to actually look like something. Growing bigger almost daily. It is going to be huge. In the last couple weeks, they started to put some of the outer "skin" on some of the lower floors. Oddly, they seem to have chosen the Wynn color. A shiny copper-ish color.

Ground has also been broken for the convention center expansion in that same general area. Most of the construction has started at the Paradise Road side, but it is supposed to connect through to the strip where Riviera used to sit, right by the big blue monster.

update: after posting the above, I goggled Resorts World Las Vegas, looking for a completion date. What popped up was an article 1 day old where Wynn is suing because Resorts World has chosen the same colors. That's funny.

Yeah, I saw all that about RW on another site. Somewhere I saw a link to "The Drew" opening in 2020 and read it was this place (didn't notice you mentioned it in your OP), and that's why I had asked.

Wynn probably has a decent case for suing over the usage of the same color. Essentially, a company can't use another company's colors if they're in the same market. If they're in different markets, then it's okay. For example, a home improvement type store wouldn't be able to use Home Depot's orange or Lowe's blue color. But a cell phone company could use either color because they're in different markets (assuming, of course, that color isn't already used by some other cell phone company.....I think Target and Netflix use the same type of red, and that's fine because they're in different markets).

I think there's some other weird shit about it too, like Wynn may have to show/prove that the other company using the same color would damage Wynn. But since they're right across the street, that may not be too difficult to do. On the other hand, if a certain industry is known for using a specific color (or range of colors), then it gets more murky. Taxis for instance are known for being yellow, so it'd be tougher for an original taxi company to sue a new taxi company over their usage of yellow, since that's the industry standard.

Worst case scenario for Wynn is they tie up Resorts World for a while and slow down their construction....and I don't think it's like they can necessarily keep constructing a lot of stuff, if it all goes in with the bronze/copper theme (esp. interior). Although I'm not some construction expert and have no idea how long all that stuff takes compared to the rest.

Since when are colors protected or trademarked? Now if someone uses the same colors in a particular pattern (logo) that can be trademarked. But colors?

I'd like to see the actual wording of the complaint. It must go beyond colors.

It took me one minute to find out the lawsuit is about more than colors.

Of Course it isn't about colors.

This is just people wanting to find fault with what other people do because they can. A judge will throw this out.

They’ve been protected for a while now. You can literally google search “are colors trademarked”.

I wonder if another casino was built to look like Caesars Palace if a judge would throw that out?
