Thread: Weather

As everyone surely knows most of the U.S. have been in the deep freeze all week. But here in Vegas, what a dandy of a week, mid 60's every day.

As I headed off to bed the past two nights, the last thing I did was check the weather in Harleysville Pa, about 45 minutes outside of Philadelphia, where a good friend lives. Last night was 2 degrees, the night before, -3 degrees. OUCH! I know other parts of the country have experienced much worse but trust me this is not typical Phila area weather.

So today, I received a text from my friend telling me that it had "warmed up" to a high of 15 degrees. I happened to be at that little nature park, a block away from Aliente Casino, so I responded with a couple pictures of people in shorts and tee-shirts enjoying the park. I received a two word reply from my buddy that was uncharacteristicly not very nice.

I guess the folks in most of the country are a little short tempered about the weather situation. But they have that goofer and his prediction to look forward to tomorrow. Wanna bet that big mouse sees his shadow? (6 more weeks of winter) He sees his shadow EVERY year, even when the sun isn't even out.

Mid 60s or -2, both are frigid to me.

Well of course.....you live in HELL. Or at least you visit here daily.

My brother is like you. He thinks Vegas winters are cold. He keeps his bedroom like a sauna, while I have the heat turned off in mine. (rooms on opposite sides of condo). And in the common area in between we fight over the thermostat.

Warming trend coming: eighty degree temperature swing expected.
    What, Me Worry?

The arctic cold front ran north of Montana then dropped down on the North Dakotans so we missed it. But we have our own cold front moving in next week. Supposed to be -15 by next Tuesday.

I think we are expecting a little cool down next week into the mid/high 50's. Maybe our last little bit of "winter".

Those affected will thaw out soon enough.

Might want to put off sun bathing for another week there Mickster. We've got a snow storm coming in tomorrow. It will be interesting to see if the Californian's beat it over the pass for Super Bowl weekend. Hmmm. Busy weekend, foreigners from California driving on snow and ice? This should be fun.

Vegas winters are literally brutal. Anything in the double digits is, objectively, freezing cold.

Come on, you can't be serious. Where might you be from?

I wear shorts like 360 days a year. I think didn't wear shorts 3 days in January when we had that little cold spell.

I just spent an hour brushing 2 feet of snow off of my second car which won't fit in my one car garage. We had 10 continuous days of lake effect snow totaling 37 inches along with a couple days of 30 below zero wind chills. Here is snow results from the U.P. of MI.

This winter in Vegas has been brutal. I am continuously in long sleeves and pants since the middle of November. I even had to buy a winter coat this year. There is not much difference between mid 50's and freezing. Thank goodness for heated seats and steering wheel warmers.

We have a forecast for possible snow showers (no accumulation, thank heavens) in Portland.

Gosh, snow showers: how can we cope?

    What, Me Worry?

I am surprised some of my Vegas "neighbors" on this forum haven't jumped all over me for this thread. Seems as soon as I opened my mouth our beautiful weather changed. Maybe I should have looked at the forecast first.

But on a positive note, the big mouse didn't see his shadow, so maybe you Midwest guys can call down a bit.

In Chicagoland, a couple days ago, we had a HIGH of -15F. Overnight it went to -27. A few days before we got socked with about 7 inches of snow. It warmed up to the teens Thursday with another couple inches of snow. This weekend we are looking at getting into the fifties - a 70+ degree swing in a few days.

We had a Super Bowl hangover here. Folks couldn't get back to Cal because the pass was closed. I was thinking of you as I've been hurling the white stuff that last few days.

There was one sunny morning in March, I got up and mowed. We have to aerate our lawns every couple of years because the ground is so hard that water just runs off.

So I get done just before the storm hits. The rain turns to snow, then ice underneath the snow. My lady spins out coming up the hill home from work. The only day I ever mowed and shoveled in the same day.

Snow in Barstow, CA (halfway between LA and Vegas) on Tuesday night, which was very unusual.

Also, 28 degrees yesterday morning at my house in the LA area, which is also unusual.

Here's my son's handprints on a cushion sitting in our backyard:
