Thread: SoCon Tournament

  1. #1
If anyone can make the Southern Conference tournament this weekend in Asheville, NC (50 miles from Cherokee Casino), you're in for some historical treats.

ETSU leads the nation in rebounding margin at a remarkable 11.1 advantage. Their performance in the tournament will determine whether they can hold on versus the UNC Tar Heels, who check in at +10.2. Unless something unusual happens, you're looking at a SoCon team leading the nation in rebound margin.

Even more surprising is the opportunity for Wofford's Travis Magee to set the all-time record for made threes. That's an all-time record for the NCAA, period. Considering that the line will probably be moved back to the FIBA distance, this record may be more or less permanent. Magee currently trails the all-time leader by 14 threes. He's roughly 50/50 to break the record during the tournament. Of the top 100 threes-made players, Magee has shot the highest percentage.

The SoCon has four teams in the top 75 in the NET ratings, so there should be plenty of top notch basketball.

For those who didn't see the results:

ETSU beat Chattanooga 68-64 Saturday to give coach Steve Forbes his 100th win in four years at the school, which is a rare accomplishment.

Wofford then beat ETSU Sunday, with Fletcher Magee making 6 of 7 threes while closing in on the all time three point field goal record. The made threes were from all angles and distances, with people draped all over him. Magee needs six more threes to tie the all time NCAA record, held by Travis Bader of Oakland.

Wofford's Magee now has a lifetime three-point field goal percentage of 43.9, which is outrageous. Ironically, ETSU coach Steve Forbes, when an assistant at Tennessee, coached the player second in three-point percentage on the all-time list, Chris Lofton. Lofton finished with a 42.2 three-point percentage, also outrageous.

Wofford meets UNCG tonight at 7 PM for the SoCon title. Win or lose, Wofford is in the NCAA tournament. Wofford is a seven point favorite.

For those following, Wofford's Fletcher Magee shattered the all-time three point field goal record in the first round of the NCAA tournament vs. Seton Hall. And ETSU finished with the top rebounding margin in the entire country.

Magee will go into the record books first in made threes and first in three-point percentage for those on the all-time top 100 list. Those records will stand for a long, long time.
