Thread: movie reco

Hi Monet, I took in the Driver at https://lookmovie.ag/movies/view/the-driver-1978 for free on my laptop. I enjoyed the movie, thanks again for the reco.

    Observations:
    1) The Driver sure plays a mean game of Chicken
    2) It's always great to know that in the movies boosted cars are always in exemplary shape - no rods about to snap, engine belts are tight, etc.
    3) Love all the 70's scenery and stoicism (try getting a room at a daily/weekly/monthly for $5/night these days, LOL).

    Cheers M8, TP.

    No Doubt on all points.
I've lived in those types of places/rooms in Las Vegas and Atlantic City.
Most of them have either been condemned or tore down
Shower/Bathroom at the end of the hall and it was a luxury if you had a sink in your room.
Reminds me of the scene from the Hustler when Eddie is renting a room for a buck and half by the night!
If things got really bad you would have to opt for the locker that cost only 3 dollars a week.
Oddly enough that is another scene from the Hustler as Eddie is living in a locker at the Bus Station.
In those days I always found that a Gym Membership was invaluable.
Those were the days they were moving away from monthly cash and forced members to have a bank account or credit card.

In 1999 you could actually play as "The Driver" on the Play Station.
They copied the Garage Scene... too bad they didn't use that beautiful Orange Mercedes!

Funny story about that movie as I was working in Cleveland at the Ritz Carlton when it came out.
I went to the theater killing some time one afternoon and it was the only movie on the board that caught my attention.
I had no clue what it was about or who was in it.
Great Movie as I suppose I would classify it as a Dark Comedy.
I'm not sure you can find too many bad Bill Murray movies.
I've owned the DVD a few times over the years and watched it plenty.
Kind of loses its charm after you know what it is all about and what is going to happen.
Great First Viewing but loses its replay value for me over time.

Yes, that's a fair statement (I'm glad to hear you have already seen it). Recall that Neve Campbell was the shit back then. I guess she was just too much of a smart ass for Hollywood or didn't want to play ball, since that was the Zenith of her career roughly.

Couple of other things. I lived out of a weekly in Reno for 3 years (working Northern Nevada casinos - mostly vulturables with a very small amount of non-vulturable VP mixed in under certain conditions), but in our much more luxurious contemporary times where there were no cockroaches, bed bugs or shared bathrooms in that experience (I did tape up some cracks to keep the ants out) - the whole nine yards were required; credit card (I'm sure there are spots where you don't have to have this), ID, damage deposit, and I think they probably did a background check on me. 40 years ago I could have just handed someone at the front desk some cash and said my name was Joe Blow - I would have much preferred to be an adult then (before the government was cracking down on people who wanted to go through life anonymously) and doing just that; oh well.

The other thing (I did say a couple): if you're going to claim the bagman got away with the cash don't kill him on a train with a gazillion witnesses (The Driver) and then expect to get away with it. Ahh Hollywood. Anyway, like I said, great flick. thanks again.

I'm too tired to watch it right now but plan to watch it tomorrow.
It's refreshing to find a movie that I haven't seen.
Subject Material seems to be in my wheelhouse.
Romantic Comedy with plenty of Gambling Adventures.
Warren Beatty is pretty good IMO but it does only garner a 6.0 Rating on IMDB.

It seems that Smart Cars have been around at least since the 60s.

Full Movie Free on Youtube it appears...

Thanks m8 - since it's on youtube and for free I will watch it tomorrow afternoon on my friend's smart tv since it has the youtube app (and internet connectivity) rather than on my laptop.

This movie ran similar to A Thomas Crown Affair.
Speaking of that movie, I like both versions (68 & 99).
Usually I detest remakes but I find it hard not to like Remington Steele.
This movie "Kaleidoscope" is worth a Free Viewing.
I'm not in a hurry to add it to my DVD Collection but since it seems obscure and forgotten that alone makes me think about adding it.
I am never upset at some movie about "Cheating" a Casino.
When I watch this movie, I think about how naive Zenking claims to be.

I also thought about the 1967 British TV Show called "The Prisoner" when I watched this movie.
That TV Show is pretty wild if you can find it.
I recently seen a few episodes on some obscure channel I have that I can't remember the channel name lol.
It seems youtube may have all the episodes.
I am going to buy this dvd set now as I have only seen a few episodes of 17.
I like when he says: "I am a Free Man, I am not a number!" lol lol lol

Hi Monet, PBS used to run the Prisoner series and that is where I saw the episodes. I enjoyed the series so I'm glad to hear you will be picking up the DVD set. The series is especially valuable for younger viewers since it will teach them that a person must not let the corrupt psycopaths in authority intimidate or bulldoze them. Obviously most of the populace has not seen the Prisoner since they all think this Covid garbage is worth destroying our entire way of life.

I'm pleased to hear that Kaleidoscope has similarities to the Thomas Crown Affair, because, like you, I enjoyed the movie (Pierce Brosnan;didn't see the older one).

Yah it's weird that Zenking finds it surprising that casinos cheat.

Hi Monet, I completed my viewing of the film. I thought it was pretty good. I think we both realized that as soon as the rules at Dominions' casino mentioned (by Dominion himself) that the decks could be switched when the person dealing was changed during the stud and draw 5 card games, that he would have to rely on his wits rather than marked decks during the final stages. I liked the old school pips and faces only cards. Back then you could depict women as completely useless in all facets except as a love interest - she was a non-stop detriment to his success until the end. But of course there would be no story if that were not the case. How he knew that the freshly printed marked decks had no latency (or if there was latency what that latency would be) between delivery to the casino and when they hit the felt is anyone's guess ;-).

Thanks again for the reco, TP.

You make a good point about the woman interest.
Most likely Feminist Pressure to be written into the story.
I read some other comments about the movie and they had the same gripe about her.
The movie is a bit goofy but I enjoyed a few parts.
I like when he was going all cat burglar.
I couldn't figure out how he kept getting naturals.
I'm guessing the glasses could see through the cards but still naturals almost every time?
The point was he knew when to bet on the bank and win.
Obviously he was being far too greedy and not milking it.
Of course that is true to real life as many players who find an edge like this burn it out.
I'm guilty of doing it a few times myself.
You can't think too much with this type of movie though... just have to enjoy it for what it is.
Better than the Avenger Movies of today.
I enjoy the cars, scenery, 60s atmosphere and the architecture.

The movie has some parallels to what Phil Ivey and Cheung Yin Sun did in real life for millions.
The movie is definitely a solid 6 out of 10 IMO... perhaps up to 7 depending on what you compare it to.

If you really want to get into a debate... lets talk about the best James Bond movie of all time IMO...

    ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE

    George Lazenby is really good.
He even breaks the 4th wall making a reference to Sean Connery.
The movie is Epic and it has the real life Vegas Fixture Telly Savalas as the Bad Guy.
It also seems to go with this 60s kick that I am on!

(It appears the Full Movie is on Youtube in 18 parts)
Recent Upload... probably get struck down by copyright.

Yes he could not control what cards were dealt - he could only make betting decisions based on the marked cards he saw, so we have to suspend belief as you say and just go with it. I was thinking exactly what you said about shearing the sheep and not torching the play as I was watching him blow out Monte Carlo.

Yes I remember On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Bond got married and his wife was shot up while they were driving. This movie was definitely a period piece. I thought it was pretty good. My favorite Bond movie would actually be a pair: The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker.

Now here I am about to write something weird. I remember Dolly (Jaws' girlfriend in Moonraker) having braces (I saw this movie in the theater when it first debuted and even got the little mini fold out poster with the full cast and promo artwork they handed out as you entered on the 1st day of the showing) - she showed them when she smiled at Jaws (the late great Richard Kiel) after the sky tram "accident". But if you watch the movie today she smiles and does not have braces. I have not heard of different versions of the film being shown so I will chalk it up to stereotypes rather than the Mandela Effect.

    LOL... you think that's bad?
I just sucked myself into watching this bond movie that I posted lol.
If it wasn't for you responding to this thread I would be like Ex-crement and his/her never ending flood.

Kaleidoscope and On Her Majesty's Secret Service were both filmed (in part) at Pinewood Studios (easy to do since Pinewood had so many films done there in part). The memory plays odd tricks with us and so I really thought it was weird that I would have such a strong memory of something that never occurred and that many other people share the same memory of braces. But of course she simply didn't have braces and that's the way of it, even though it is much more entertaining to think some people such as myself jumped timelines. I guess it's like those optical illusions that a lot people interpret the same way like the wire-frame box that can be looked at in two different ways, etc.

I hope the upcoming new Bond movie is good Monet. I look forward to watching it on putlocker or 123movies (as I just did a couple weeks back with Tenet).

We have had around 57 years of James Bond movies.
I'm ready for it to end lol.
I heard they want the next Bond to be a woman and I have no interest in watching a woman as 007.
The recent installments of woman like Bond movies have been terrible.
The only reason I enjoy Atomic Blonde is because of the 80s, the soundtrack and that character played by James McAvoy.

As far as spy movies go, I suppose "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" is what I want or enjoy the most.
However, I want my Bond movies to be filled with corn and cheese.
I need my Bond to Kill people, always Win at Gambling, drinking Shaken Martinis and Sex Crazed for every Woman.

Yes Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy was exceptional. Like Miller's Crossing, it fully illustrates the power of the thinking man. If they jump the shark with Bond, I too will no longer watch the future Bond movies (like me, I'm sure you're done watching Star Wars movies and look at the sewage remake of Ghostbusters). I think the next one though (No Time to Die) still has Daniel Craig. When it hits putlocker/123, perhaps I will screen mirror it from my laptop to my friend's smart TV and enjoy it with some pizza and a just-above-freezing can of Coca Cola.

You guys probably watch or have seen A LOT more movies than I, but there was a movie I saw with a buddy in 77' or 78' at a drive-in in Brentwood Ca. called The Farmer. It's a classic 70's revenge flick that apparently is ultra rare to find now.
Wondering if either of you have ever seen it.

Appears to be a Swedish Movie.
Seems that people either love it or hate it.
Must be the reason for the low rating score.
Thanks for bringing it up though as I don't believe I have seen or heard of it.
I'll watch it and let you know.

    As I mentioned before.
I watch this movie a lot.
A movie that had both real life cops and robbers as technical advisors.
A good one from Michael Mann.
    James Belushi's first movie.
Supposedly his brother Jim was on set enjoying the party and his brother.

Tuesday Weld makes sense as she has done these types of movies before.
One of those being the Cincinnati Kid.

Some amazing quotes in this movie...

I'll whack out ya whole family. People'll be eatin' 'em in their lunch tomorrow in their Wimpyburgers and not know it.

Lie to no one. If there 's somebody close to you, you'll ruin it with a lie. If they're a stranger, who the fuck are they you gotta lie to them?

Probably the best "safecracker" scene of all time using a torch.

Thanks Monet. Yes Thief is a good one.
Good luck trying to find The Farmer. As I said before it’s supposedly super rare. I’ve read that in the 77-78’ range it had limited showings, mostly around military areas? Me and my buddy were in our mid teens then and we caught it twice in the span of about a week. I remember it played with The Boys from Company C.
    Wish I could get it.

This is good because I found the Trailer and I found another movie I haven't seen that is supposed to be comparable to Thief.
So I have 2 movies that I haven't seen to track down.
The Farmer might be impossible but am hopeful as it seems many people wanted a copy back in 2008.
The other movie is "The Sorcerer (1977)" with Roy Scheider who is always good in these types of movies.
This also reminds me I need to find a copy of the original movie called "Man on Fire (1987)" with Scott Glenn.
I enjoy the Denzel/Scott version but always wanted to watch/own the 1987 version.
So that's 3 movies I get out of this conversation, so thanks again!

From what I read the movie has a copyright problem with the music.
So if a company wants to release the movie they have to pay the bill for the copyright.

    The Farmer
    He never gets mad.
    He gets EVEN!

Starring: Gary Conway from Land of the Giants
