Thread: Canadian Casinos

  1. #1
Hi, was going to go to Northwestern Washington in a couple of months for work.

Never been and from researching looks like all their slots and VP (Washington state) may be class II or similar set up.

Was thinking of going into Vancouver Canada area to play at some places. Never been to Canada and from researching it looks like there are 4 important things I need to be aware of:

    1. Need a valid passport

    2. Canada does not have taxable jackpots (Although I understand that legally as a US Citizen u are required to report to IRS)

    3. You have to declare any cash you have on you over $10k at border or risk getting it seized.

    4. Canada casinos dont accept US currency and you can exchange US currency at casino but exchange rates may not be favorable there so may want to exchange elsewhere.

Anything else I should be aware of?

    Any tips are greatly appreciated

    Thank you

If you cross at a major high traffic border station, you're much less likely to get strong scrutiny.

If you attempt to cross at a smaller one, make sure you have no criminal convictions (even misdemeanors) in the past 10 years, or they won't let you in.

You don't always need a passport. If you drive into Canada an Enhanced Drivers License will do. I have an enhanced drivers license. It is suppose to be good to go to both Canada and Mexico. I never used it for that purpose so far. NEXUS Card will also work.

Cool, thank you for the replies!

    The currency declaration rule is:

$10k or more USD going out of the US has to be declared stateside (easy to miss this, you have to go out of your way to do it. The normal process of crossing the border does not entail outbound declaration.)

$10k CAD or equivalent (~7.5k USD) going into Canada.

$10k or more USD or equivalent ($13,333 CAD I guess) going back into US.

Or anyway that's what I took away from recent trial and error.

I would recommend to switch to crypto. To obtain some, try OTC exchange for best rates and instant transfers.https://thejingstock.com/

The simple way: change your money before you go. Get a passport card. (what's an "enhanced DL"?)
Don't look for a "less scrutiny" crossing or any way to game the system. You're just asking for trouble. Do everything right and you won't have to worry. Borders crossing is not just some casual thing any longer.

I believe he's talking about the passport card. It is valid for US, Canada, Mexico, carribean, and Bermuda only. It is a conveience option offered now for a small fee. I got it last time I renewed my passport. Has nothing to do with driving.

I always got the best exchange rate by going to a Canadian bank once I crossed the border. Canadian Customs is always concerned with Americans having enough money on them for their visit to Canada so you might get questioned about it. But I would be wary of crossing with 10K or more cash. I just don't trust the authorities to do the right thing.

I don't know if they have solved the problem but before 9/11 it only took a few minutes sitting in a line of cars to get through Customs. After 9/11 it became hours as they were giving everyone much more scrutiny. I used to play Omaha 8 at the International in Blaine, Washington where the I-5 crossing is. It was all Canadian players and they crossed the border everyday to play the game. But 9/11 killed the game because of the long wait time to get across the border.

PS: Since it was all Canadian business at the International the poker game was played with Canadian chips. The Canadians got 100 in chips for 100 Canadian. I got 135 in chips for 100 American.

"More importantly, mickey thought 8-4 was two games over .500. Argued about it. C'mon, man. Nothing can top that for math expertise. If GWAE ever has you on again, you can be sure I'll be calling in with that gem.'Nuff said." REDIETZ
