Thread: Are there still "loose slots" in casinos?

  1. #1
Going back a decade or more, there were casinos that seeded their slot floors with machines that were "loose" or tended to pay more. But that was a decade ago. I haven't heard anything in the last couple of years about "loose machines" although the subject still comes up for discussion every once in a while.

Here's a summary of what did happen in the past:

Certain machines that paid "better" were placed in high visibility positions-- usually by an entrance or at the end of a walkway-- where passersby could see winners collecting.

Then casino managers got the idea to move the "loose machines" to places further inside the casino to force players deeper "inside" the casino.

The "loose" machines didn't necessarily pour out jackpot after jackpot, but their "hit frequency" was more generous. Sometimes they did pay more jackpots but these weren't necessarily "casino buster" jackpots -- they were more in the range of $1,000 or slightly higher.

You just don't hear much about this anymore and I think it's because it was something done in the past. Today, most slot machines are video display terminals and probably are 1-cent machines with multiple lines that in reality need $1 to $3 for a maximum play and payoff. And as we know these "penny slots" are the least generous.

The old rules still apply: if you want the slots with the better payoffs and lower casino "holds" then the higher the denomination you play the better games you'll find for the player. But if you do hear of a "loose machine" or a casino that does plant loose slots let us know.

Casinos do want winners -- because if there weren't winners there wouldn't be customers. But I think the strategy of having certain loose slot machines is something of the past.
