Thread: Jean Scott Retiring

  1. #1
I just got the news that Jean and Brad are retiring from casino visits and video poker. They are going to move to Columbus, Georgia to be near her daughter, grandkids, and great-grandkids. Brad is 87 years old and has been in failing health. I don't know how far out of the loop she is going to be but as a 100% players advocate she is going to be irreplaceable. Hopefully, Brad recovers from his ailments. I think they will be sorely missed in the video poker world.

She recently wrote of their last trip to Harrah's Cherokee and how they didn't give action but collected about $2500 from freeplay since they were retiring. Putting together incomplete information in her blogs it looks to me that she and Brad were playing $5 NSUD at $10 per tier credit at Cherokee for a number of years. I wonder how this play escaped Dan Druff.

Unfortunately, age beats everybody into slowing down. At 87, Brad's probably just succumbing to aging issues. And Jean's not much younger. I'm sure casino environments and having to deal with the hustling LV atmosphere finally wore them both down. They actually lasted for a pretty good stint. Here's where having that generational family really helps out.

I've been reading up on this story today and it's now a lot easier to understand.

First, Brad looks awful, he's 87, and he has several serious medical conditions which guarantee he isn't going to be around very much longer. It's not genius to suggest they should have left LV and the casinos much earlier.

Next, Jean is preparing for his passing. When he goes the majority of their retirement income goes with him. Being with family ensures a comfortable remainder of whatever time she has left.

Finally....the kids aren't stupid. Having the grandparents around means automatic babysitters. Especially when said grandparents are nearly immobile.

Like I said, they've had a good run. Now, it's out with the old/in with the new!

Also---I know nothing about NSUD because I've never bothered with it. But it's a -EV game, just like everything else country-wide at CET properties. I've been to Cherokee at least 8 times, because my wife's parents live in Asheville. I never found anything decent to play there, especially not enough to pour thousands of dollars thru. My expectation is that with their airfare reimbursements and all those comps and freeplay, they did the same as any other 7-Stars player in the sucker CET system does: they've been losing their asses for years.

Jean's grandkids are adults with their own children. You might get your momma to babysit the kids. They are still young enough to keep up. But you don't get your 80 year old grand momma to babysit the kids.

Rob, if you've followed any of these CET threads the 7 stars gig was about finding 9/6 Jacks (99.54%)with just $10 per tier credit to get to 7 stars status. Here's Brad and Jean playing $5 NSUD (99.73%) with just $10 per tier credit. Dan had created lists of the best CET casinos to play for 7 stars status. I don't think anything was put up about playing Cherokee NSUD. Did anyone even know the game was there besides Jean and Brad?

I know you don't buy it, Rob, but NSUD with decent freeplay is easy to beat. Jean used to write in her blog about visiting her kids and grandkids in Columbus, Georgia and taking them up to Cherokee on full comp.

Pfffftt..... that's nothing when the world is your oyster from years of playing the DoubleUp bug...Jean and Brad are pikers compared to Rob.

How dare Rob show them any respect.

I agree. Having people who are in their 80's babysit little kids is just begging for trouble.

IIRC, Dan had visited Cherokee, and mentioned the NSUD play there.

Cherokee was my home casino for several years; the $5 JoB there was how I earned/retained 7 Star. I was able to cash 4 figures in freeplay there monthly for awhile, so it was a pretty good play while it lasted. Given how cheap CET is with their VP offerings, I'm surprised it wasn't axed earlier.

In her latest blog Jean called the NSUD with freeplay at Cherokee an advantage play. But she also mentioned that they had just changed it to $25 per tier credit which prompted her and Brad to call it quits and retire. At their age they had probably been intending to do so for some time.

Edit: Just went over her Sep 27 blog again. Jean called it "the best advantage play in the whole Caesar's empire for quite a few years. It was surprising it lasted as long as it did."

Good run by Jean and Brad, they made good coin.

Jim and Lois still on the hustle in Vegas and show no signs of slowing down.

I'm looking at 80-somethings babysitting grandkids or great-grandkids from our point of view, not theirs or anyone like them. We're not expecting to be any less alert or capable 15 years from now because of our health status now, so yes, we expect we'll still be doing it at a high level then.

There's several reasons why NSUD (or whatever it is) at Cherokee is no big deal. The place is a headache to drive to from anywhere, with much of it from at least 50 miles away on twisty one lane roads. Even coming in from Asheville, the closest civilization area, is a PITA. Coming in from Georgia or any of the surrounding states is a no-brainer hundreds of miles waste of time. And if people want to believe that playing a -EV game where they lose money but see all that sunshine because of free play or any of that slot club stuff is worth while, good for them. This play would be marginal with very little meat on the bone even for someone who lives in LV and could play it in LV. No thank you.

If a casino gives you 4K a month in freeplay to run a 100K a month wager on NSUD its a pretty good deal for some people. It's a theoretical $270 loss on the game to get the 4K a month. The reason freeplay has been cut dramatically in so many casinos is because of the sharper gamblers doing this.

Another point, Rob is that if a machine is gaffed up to not yield the intrinsic value of the payscale then everyone is going to lose, even those that run a progressively higher wager on a machine.

Yes, theoretically and technically. But it's not worth the trip. There's no guarantees on the positives, and the realities are the expenses, the trips, the tax issues from playing $5, and not having the proper bankroll to play that game, which would be at least $50,000. RoR is way too risky, especially for having to go to such an out-of-the-way place.

From following her blog I think Jean used that place to take her kid and grandkids on free vacations. One of the things I like to do is take fall foliage drives. I hear that area of North Carolina is good for it. You're right about the distance thing. I'm looking at the Ozarks here in a couple weeks.

Fall foliage in NC is perfect this time of year. Also a great place for vacations with kids. I'm sure Jean will be able to go back to Cherokee at least a few times.

Lake of the Ozarks can get out-of-control when colleges are on break. But those people have more teeth than the ones in Appalachia

That game has been listed in the vpfree2 database for years.

Loser Rob making assumptions about Jean and Brad is right in line with this character of comedy.

    Wise up, dopey.

Jean and Brad, plain and simple, are the stereotypical long time video poker addicts. As a very good comparison, arci and his wife also moved to LV to be able to satisfy their craving of playing -EV VP--also using slot club benefits as the bridge to being able to claim +EV.... until the Mrs. became too ill to continue. So they moved away.

Jean and Brad did much the same thing....although she found the time to write. Now, they depart. Again, illness gains the upper, sensible hand.

These VP plays that get some forum hack like Piggy all wet are not what a real VP AP would call being worth their time. While the Cherokee play may have been the best in CET's empire, knowledgeable players know that ain't saying much. And guess how much it cost the two of them to make those trips from LV to Georgia to Cherokee and back. For NSUD with "sensible TIER CREDITS"? Get real.

I find it hard to believe that you have had any individual success in life, like you claim. Denigrating someone that has done no evil and is heading into the grave is about as despicable as it gets. You deserve whatever evil comes your way. Just a poor excuse for a human.
