Thread: Older man with Nevada license plate "ELVIS" getting tons of bogus automated tickets in the mail from states he never visits

    Automated ticketing systems suck.

They aren't about safety. They're about revenue, and often these systems are administered by third party, non-government companies which get a piece of every citation they issue, thus putting a profit motive to falsely ticket.

I've always hated these things, and I hate them even more after reading this story: https://www.reviewjournal.com/local/...ansom-1934227/

Basically, a Vegas-based fan of Elvis got Nevada vanity plates in 1978, just a year after Elvis died. He's had the plates on various cars over the past 42 years.

Unfortunately, Vegas souvenir shops sell fake Nevada plates reading "ELVIS", which some people put on the front of their car in states where a front plate isn't required. (Nevada does not require a front plate either, by the way.)

Unfortunately, states which DO require a front plate will often use the front plate as the identifier to ticket people via automated systems. Every time one of the people with a fake Nevada "ELVIS" plate would get ticketed, this poor dude would get the citation in the mail.

Each citation comes with a picture. Even though he could prove that he was not the driver, and even though he could prove that he didn't own the type of car in the picture, some states were difficult about dismissing the tickets.

Kentucky and Indiana, which do require a front plate and use that to ticket people, were especially difficult, and simply wouldn't dismiss them. Even worse, they threatened the poor old guy's credit. Only when he took it to the media (Vegas Channel 8 news), who got a state senator involved, did those states reluctantly dismiss the tickets.

In reality, it's unlikely they could have harmed his credit, since these states did not have his SSN to report him. However, they could have held up his registration through the Nevada DMV next time he went to register the car.

These automated systems need to be outlawed.

I guess someone needs to react to this.

First, it makes zero sense that Kentucky threatened to hurt his "credit" if they even could. (why's an 82-yr. old need credit anyway?) States have had reciprocal DMV agreements for years now. The other states would go after him thru the DMV, and all he'd have to do is prove he was never out of state at the time along with his ELVIS plate explanation. This would in turn make the Nevada DMV cancel his plates to eliminate future individual and official state harassment.

Automated ticketing does not suck. People want to break the laws then they should be held accountable. The more I drive by people being pulled over for speeding and all other moving violations the more satisfied I become. Speed and red light/stop sign cameras really are a sight for sore eyes. So many assholes on the roads.

It's funny how people run red lights so consistently it's become normal.
Take off that stupid mask you big baby.

Las Vegas is by far the worst city for this I have ever seen. A red light here means there's time for two more vehicles to proceed.

I think I'm going to get rear ended some day for stopping on a yellow.

Then you haven't been to Phoenix, where every leased BMW & Lexus-driving yuppie and hard-working boy in their pickups think everyone else on the road is just in their way. And the 20-something princesses believe whatever texts they're getting and sending are FAR more important than you or your desire to get going once lights turn green.

My answer to all this is to drive the speed limit everywhere, make full stops at stop signs and on right turn reds, and thereby irritate the living PISS out of everyone who thinks what they're doing is more important that what I'm doing. I fully support police pullovers, cameras, and applauding the misery people cause themselves in intersection accidents.

lol this guy goes around through life patting himself on the back for trolling people by obeying traffic laws. It puts his existence on this forum in perspective.
It is official. Redietz will never be on Dan Druff's podcast. "too much integrity"

He shouldn't have ever had this issue in the first place especially not nowadays where Cameras show clear as crystal images of the driver's FACE and the System should know that these people are NOT this guy and the cars are NOT his.

Take comfort in the fact that no one is actually backing up his wishes to have you permanantly banned.

Smart is knowing a Tomato is a fruit.

Wise is knowing a Tomato doesn't belong in a fruit salad.
