Let me ask a question which might clear up the issue of betting with one's own money.

How do you win this contest? Do you simply have the best W/L results or do you show the biggest $$ win?

If the winner is determined by the best W/L results then money means nothing and an entrant would only need minimal bets, or NO BETS AT ALL if only picks needed to be submitted. If however the winner was determined by $$ results then certainly the entrants bankroll and betting amounts come into play.

So, gentlemen, how were the winners determined?

You must choose two plays a week. Best Bet is worth two points. The other play is worth one point. Once a season, you are allowed a play worth three points. Standings are determined by total points. Games must be assigned by Monday evening for the following week. The contest is 18 weeks, starting (unfortunately) with the first week of NFL football. During the regular season, you can choose college sides, NFL sides, or NFL totals. When the bowls start, you can also use college football totals.

Originally, games had to be chosen by Sunday evening, right at the time lines came out at the Stardust. Now they are chosen by Monday evening. Lines are assigned as of Monday at 6 PM Eastern. Although originally there were ties (pushes), which were worth half value, now the contest coordinators make all lines half points so as to avoid pushes.

With the horse racing contests, the participants deposit the same starting bankroll, then are required to bet a minimum on each race, or each day, depending on the length of the contest.

Contest winners are determined by the ending bankrolls. Sometimes the winners are those that have lost the least.

Let me interrupt this inspiring thread to announce Comrade Bernie is wiping out the field in Nv. today, while the pride of the rainbows--butt boy, aka Alfred E. Newman--is getting clobbered by voters who DO NOT EVER want a president who has their wires crossed.

Let us all thank Nevada voters for doing the decent thing today!

Thank you for the above but I still don't understand if money was involved and how much? Did you actually make cash bets and did the total wins matter or just piling the winner was all that mattered?

    Thank you for clarifying.

Points matter. That's it, except there's an award for Best Bets Overall Record in addition to the top three total points.

Coach--most of our on-line contests require a fee to enter the contest and then use a fictitious bankroll requiring $2.00 win and place bets on a set number of races. Most of us play low cost qualifiers to get into the final rounds of these contests. But you can also pay the high contest fee if you want. I don't think it is a good value to just pay the fee as it is large. The qualifiers are cheap but you have to win that and a second round to get in. Usually those races are mandatory as set by the contest site. Sometimes they are optional from among a set group of races. In major contests like the NHC, they are a mix of mandatory and optional races at a mythical $2.00 win and place.

The Breeders Cup contest is real money and you can bet any amount and includes gimmick bets. It has a $2500 fee towards prizes and $7,500 live bankroll. Many on track tournaments like Keeneland also allow for gimmicks and whatever amounts of your bankroll you like, as long as a certain minimum number of races are bet. Keeneland is a $3,500 buy in and a minimum of $500 per race for 4 of the 9 races (or similar ) with the requirement that you bet at least 50% of your bankroll on one of the last 2 races.

I once played in a contest where you had to bet 50% of your bankroll every race. I hit big early and had a long discussion with management as to what would happen if I locked it up. After much discussion I was disqualified from the prize money but allowed to keep my money (which far exceeded the prize).

I have had no luck at breeders cup or Keeneland as you need to turn that buy-in into huge amounts to be competitive and I haven't been able to do so. I have won on-line cash contests--a 50K and a 75K but they are few and far between. There is a 100K contest next weekend that I have failed to qualify for as of today. Will keep trying rest of the week.

Some corrections and notes, since I spent some time at a number of Boyd properties last week:

    1) The two happy hours at the Main Street Station brew pub were not in effect. Sadness.
    2) The 16/10 deuces wild machines to the left of the south doors at MSS accrue points at 1/3 the rate of other video poker. They now accrue tier credits, also, although I do not have a sense of the rate.
    3) Had a comped lunch at the MSS buffet. Food was good, better than the last few times I'd been there for lunch.
    4) At Orleans and Gold Coast, video poker does now accrue tier credits, although slowly, unlike last couple of times when no amount of video poker appeared to garner tier credits.
    5) In lieu of Ruby card members not being able to accrue points, Boyd is offering gimmick days in addition to Young at Heart. The gimmick days require earning five to 10 tier credits, after which you can choose a prize. Some of the prizes are 1500 and 2000 points. So they've found a way to backdoor points to Ruby members.

    Thanks for the update.
I'm not sure what happened during your visit, but the HH's at 777 were alive and well at MSS's 777 Brew Pub Monday through Friday as of 3/3. To avoid confusion, I'll clarify that the casino bar, Boar's Head Bar, serves 777 beer, but does not do happy hours.
By this point, TC accrual at Boyd has been pretty well documented. You shouldn't expect any TC's on +EV games. Games like NSUD's can be played in such a way that one would never see a TC. Switching machines, switching games on the same machine, switching denominations, checking pay tables on other games, and getting timed out because you took a break or ran out of credits are all speculated to reset the progress towards earning the next TC back to zero. I've been timed out on some machines in the time it took me to dig another hundred out of my wallet.
At some point I'll find some TC earning accrual rates and post them here to void some of the mystery.
The typical Young at Heart prize I see is a choice between 2,000 points, a $10 MP, or a $5 food credit. You can do this at multiple casinos.

I'm wondering HTF red got by without the brew pub happy hours?

Sadness....really? Is this for real? Maybe if you outright solicit more business like you did with me, or post more self-promotion BS you'll be able to buy full-priced beer and food without going into cardiac arrest.

Tringlomane on another site has posted TC earning rates for different games. Examples he gave were 9/6 JOB = $108.70 per TC, 8/5 BP = $60.24 per TC, 9/6 DDB = $49 per TC, and 9/5 DDB = $23 per TC. NSUD's would require more than $170 per TC. I did the NSUD estimate. I have a lot of data points for 9/6 JOB and Tring's calculation is in line with what I receive.
