Thread: 24-hr Supermarkets are cutting hours

  1. #1
I went to the first supermarket and it’s hours of operation changed to 7 am to 11 pm or a reduction of 8 hours.

The second one had new hours of 5 am to 11 pm or a reduction of 6 hours.

The shelves for toilet paper, paper towels, etc in the second store is starting to be bare. I was walking down the food aisles like soup, frozen foods, etc and it’s clear to me there are either supply issues and/or people are starting to hoard food for a 14-day quarantine.

The reduction in hours could be a manpower issue of not enough people showing up for work, e.g. claiming they are sick (when they are not and taking advantage of new, liberal sick day rules). You never know.

It’s scary how it’s like a recession in retail, restaurants, bars, etc. It’s almost like our economy is going into a deep freeze for a few weeks.

Lastly, there’s noticeably less traffic on the roads. Typically, I have to drive 65+ mph to keep up with traffic at 5 am last month and this morning at 5 am, I had my car on cruise control at 55 mph and few cars passed me. It has some elements of being in a ghost town.

As far as the new, liberal sick day rules, the terminology is employers of 500+ are exempt. Screw the little guy, large corps do what they want, doesn’t matter if it’s an R or a D all the politicians do it.

I was talking about employees abusing or taking advantage of the new sick day policy that led to the reduction in store hours.

If I was working, I would call in sick if I wasn’t 100% since preventism is now the goal in the age of COVID-19.

I was ready for a 3 AM run to the 24-hour Kroger around the corner tonight, because Monday early AM is the least busy time, but just discovered they reduced hours today and closed at 10 PM. So I will get there at 7 AM and hope it's relatively empty.

I remember the joke about small town life in the south "Get an RC Cola and a Moon Pie and go down and watch the A & P truck unload." Well, I guess now the joke is "Watch the Walmart truck unload."

I went to Walmart last Friday after getting out of the hospital. It was about 5 PM when Walmart is normally busy as hell. There was hardly anybody in the store shopping. I quickly seen why. All the shelves had been raided. Canned goods were all gone. But the produce section was full. I went back to the toilet paper isle. The entire rack was empty. I was about to walk off but here comes this Walmart employee with a big load of toilet paper and starts stocking it in the shelves. I look around and there is no one back in that section of the store to see it but me. So I loaded the cart with several 12 roll packs of Angel Soft. Got a trunk load. Next was the frozen entree's section. The inventory was low but I was able to load up on TV dinners.

So I've been pigging out mostly on TV dinners for the last week. The shit is starting to taste pretty bland. But I've still stopped by Walmart a few mornings. You have to get there early to find anything. So far haven't had a problem getting romaine lettuce and a good steak or two. But in the frozen food section two of there long freezers are shut down.

"More importantly, mickey thought 8-4 was two games over .500. Argued about it. C'mon, man. Nothing can top that for math expertise. If GWAE ever has you on again, you can be sure I'll be calling in with that gem.'Nuff said." REDIETZ

Stopped by Walmart this morning about 9 AM. Produce section full except for potatoes were very low. Frozen foods section about half stocked. Meat section about half stocked. Canned goods section still empty. Except no one likes the Chef Boyardee Beefaroni. Me either. Tried a can of that shit once. Nasty. Plenty of bottled water. Toilet paper section bone dry. Plenty of bread.

When I went to our local grocery store that has trimmed their hours. Open 2 hours later, close 4 hours sooner. I noticed there were no gaps where things were missing. I then noticed the granola bars I buy are no longer anywhere to be seen. They've basically put different brands out and replaced the labels on the shelves. So they're not just restocking, but reorganizing by what stock is available. All in all very impressed given how few things were missing.

We couldn't buy eggs so we settled for a carton of egg whites. Oh yea and we're making sandwiches out of hamburger buns.

We have about two months of dry goods stashed and are just replacing them as they are used. Have gone to picking up at Kroger instead of shopping in store. Certain kinds of produce get wiped out here. Others, such as tomatoes, raspberries, bananas -- plenty available. Paper goods are gone. Canned soup maybe half the usual stock but available.
