Thread: Covid-19 by the numbers

I just read a report where there are no new infections in China today. I think that's pretty good news.

Another item: South Korea's mortality rate is 1%.

Rob, just once could you put a cap on your hate and biased comments because you don't like someone. I am analyzing the numbers as I see them. And others have come to other conclusions and shared things that I haven't considered. I appreciate that. Can't we just have a reasonable discussion about this epidemic that many of us are concerned about without the usual biased takedowns?

Now could you explain your "effective flu vaccine" comment, because I certainly acknowledge there is an effective flu vaccine. I think that is what it is going to take for us to come out of this Covid-19 problem and that probably means a year of this lockdown / shutdown / social distancing stuff. I fear that will be a year or longer of this status quo.

Take care of yourself, Rob. Be healthy.
Sure. The flu vaccine is very effective but not everybody chooses to get it. That means covid comparisons are OK to make, but in an apples to apples comparison where we have a covid vaccination, the Kung-flu would be FAR less prevalent than influenza. I saw that on a news show, and it makes a lot of sense.

You take care of yourself too, especially with your pre-existing condition.

I ran around all day yesterday and today stocking up on just about everything.
The Armslist website was back up so I met up with many people and bought more guns and ammo.
Easier to find that compared to toilet paper.
I don't really care about the numbers of the virus.
If you catch the virus and die that is what happens.
But this shutdown of the world is going to kill billions.
They have already claimed the supply chain is taking a hit and most likely will collapse.
75% of the supplies are transported by truck.
Once that collapses it will be game on or game over depending on your perspective.
I would rather take my chances of everyone getting sick and recovering compared to shutting everything down.
I am expecting a national quarantine with checkpoints everywhere.
    Long Live Big Brother!!

I did see something that made me laugh as I was driving around.
This guy has handicapped tags with a lifted truck.
I am sure he/she has a good reason but I found it humorous.

    That's the thing, is non-covid+covid+shutdown deaths < non-covid+covid+ "no shutdown" deaths ?
I sure hope they thought this through before they decided to shut everything the fuck down. I mean deaths from not-eating (supply chain as you wrote), people shooting each other dead to get food (supply chain again), deaths from bank runs gone bad, deaths from dental infections (untreated abscess infection going into brain or bacterial heart attack) as a result of dental offices being shut down, and on and on and on.
Remember, these are the same characters that would cut you off in traffic to beat you to a red light when times were good, and now you have to deal with these very same characters with everything shut down. It's smart of you to get more guns (and more ammo).

My next run is going to be more on precious metals.
I enjoyed your post very much as it made me laugh.
The point about dental offices is spot on.
I certainly don't understand or have the answers but I know for sure if you close everything, like they are doing, it is going to be mass body count.

I figure the run on the banks is coming very soon.
I used to be able to withdrawal 3000 from chase eATMs.
A week or so ago I was having a problem as it would only let me take out a thousand.
I haven't tried to take out a large sum at the window but I heard some stories of the banks putting on new limits.
I actually need to make a low 6 figure transfer to another account and turn it into liquid.
It requires some paperwork that I might not be able to acquire since like you said... everything is shut the fucked down lol.

I figure the banks are going to just close and steal everyone's cash.
Of course all this won't matter if it gets that far but I would like to consolidate while we still have some freedoms.
Years ago people were investing in this and that and I told my wife I think guns and ammo is the best investment you can make.
A friend of mine used to show off his expensive watch and I showed him my cheap gun and said I can just take your watch lol.

Because of the fractional reserve system in place, the banks keep less cash on hand than the total electronic deposits (the ledgers so to speak) as you probably already know. Who knows what will happen when people try to get THEIR money out and they can't because all the money that was on hand has already been withdrawn (bank runs gone bad). Not much different than no food/toilet paper on the shelves of the grocery store (no money in the vault or in the tellers' drawers).

I think you guys are overblowing things but I think I will start paying for stuff with a CC and keep more cash around.

I don't think supply chain is going to collapse. I have little doubt that some things wont' be impacted but not the stuff we need day to day. My biggest concern would be medication that is imported from China. I do not have any idea to what extent that stuff is made in china.

If I have enough time I am going to buy a used battery from a wrecked tesla and about 1k in solar panels. That'll get me 1500 watts and such. I might be able to run an AC on that for a few hours a day. A lot more useful than a big truck or what have you. Need an electric car once I get that. The solar setup I have for a variety of reasons, but there is no power where I'd put it. So I have to pay for power if I want it anyway.

I don't believe that they are going to shut things down for 14 to 30 days.
I find it hilarious when they shut down America for 30 days and tell everyone not to panic.
They say it is all normal and to just vegetate for 30 days and all will be well.
Obviously the public hasn't fully panicked since most of us are still civil to each other.
It is obvious they are shutting everything down and they had someone test positive in a grocery store yesterday here in Vegas.
Now that whole store closed it's doors until further notice.
I find it funny how a few weeks ago they said its not that bad and now you are saying its not that bad.
It is obviously bad and they keep telling us it is going to get worse!
One moment they say don't worry, don't panic... just relax.
And right after that they say this is just the beginning... things are going to get far worse.
Explain to me how everything else will shut down but the supply chain will be fully operational??
Workers in Amazon Warehouses have tested positive as well.

Whatever though... I say just open everything up and take our chances.
The general public can't take lock down lol... you'll see

I don't think it'll get that bad because so many people don't have symptoms or the symptoms are relatively mild. I think enough will be able to carry on. There won't be mass chaos. People won't be able to buy so much shit for a few months and might not have their 2% lactose free available at all times. I bought the wrong toilet paper and gf screamed at me. It is all crazy white people with money panicking and they do it because they have no power in their lives. Not just white people, but go to a Mexican grocery store and it is full of meat etc. Likely even has eggs!

I never said it'll be fully operational, it just won't be some crazy end-times shit. I bought a small thing of generic aspirin the other day because thats what they suggest you use. Once people start catching it, it might be low. There was tons of it sitting around.

What we're trying to avoid is the stuff that is discussed here. https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/d...emic-could-get

I think some things will become hard to come across, but i don't think it will effect the vast majority of people in any noticeable way.

hmmm the Mexican Grocery Stores here had to change their hours.
    They have been getting swamped.
I went in but the checkout lines were so long I didn't go to the back to see if they had chicken, eggs, milk or beef.
I looked at everyone's carts and didn't see those red bags for meat but I only seen about 10 carts so that doesn't mean anything.
One Mexican Grocery Store here in Vegas did close its doors.
    Hopefully you are right.
Yes, I am one of those WASPs that is starting to panic and buy everything in sight.
Kinda fun to me actually as I enjoy the panic/chaos.
However, I really do believe that you will start to see shortages of everything soon.
I missed out on all the TP but I figure I can use the shower or wash cloth.
I mean they closed NY and San Francisco (Thank God for closing San Fran) and put up a Quarantine Zone!
Do you really think they are just going to go back to the way it was??
California just said that it is possible that 50% of their population is infected!
    Possible mind you.

I don't really have much else to comment on except I suspect there is a huge difference in a place like San Francisco and say somewhere that has little public transportation. I'm a big fan of public transportation. Not a fan of smog and such. However it is a clear advantage with the virus when everyone drives their car around. Maybe it has just hit things harder in Vegas than the South.

I even have n95 masks for when I go out. Have ones with the valve and those without the valve. Hanging low trying to avoid it as long as possible.

Here are the numbers I just read on this site:

    242,713 confirmed cases
    9867 deaths
    That would be 4%

However, unknown cases are not in this equation.

I don't think any of us realize how important China is to our current Supply Chain.
I am not sure we have enough time to correct putting all our eggs in the Chinese Basket so to speak.

On the flip side... China did lie about this virus and made matters far worse.
I don't doubt that it was planned.

    LA issuses Public Health Order

"This will be a moment when everything changed." Mayor Garcetti said. "The data is crystal clear. We're at a point where the rate of increase based on the tests that we're getting back ... is the same rate that we see at a place like Italy." Garcetti wants to act now to save lives and flatten the curve.

"Nobody is locked down," Garcetti emphasized. "This is safer at home because you're safer at home."

The order goes into effect midnight on Thursday and Friday morning for businesses. Almost all businesses will be closed unless it's an essential service.

They say nobody is on Lock Down but Don't Leave Your Home unless you need food lol lol lol
So we just infect each other at the Grocery Store.
It won't be long before they Ration the Groceries.
That is Fucking Lock Down and it won't be long till its Policed.
    Police State Coming Soon.

It’s times like these that I’m glad we live in a rural less populated city. More of a gun rack in the truck stereotype. Although I’m a bit more optimistic than you might be Monet, you’ve given me some ideas. Tomorrow I think I’ll go to the bank and pull a few thousand out just to have on hand and then debit everything else from the store. My wife and I were both raised to have a well stocked pantry. You know, buying back ups for the back up type of thing. Have plenty of guns and ammo so that’s not a problem.

  18. #38
I think it is better to be in a rural setting.
Especially if you have a working farm that can sustain oneself.
Of course not being able to buy supplies would crash that as well.
I wonder how the Amish Community is doing.
I need to see if I can find some information.
Some of them still use horses for plowing and such.

Personally I wanted to start a farm about a year or two ago but I never made it lol.
I have the truck and the guns but not the gun rack... I need to work on that

Seriously though closing all business for 2 weeks is one thing but they even said they expect months of closing not weeks.
They closed many schools for the whole year now all over the country.
Like I said before... when the Casinos complied to shutting down all over Nevada you knew life was over as we knew it.
It is starting to get real lol... As serious as it is I find it funny but seriously the Shit Has Hit The Fan.

"Wuhan study offers new insight into fatality rate of coronavirus. About 1.4 percent of people infected with the virus in Wuhan, China, where the outbreak originated, died, a new study indicates."

    https://www.nbcnews.com/health/healt...virus-n1163881

They are likely still under reporting people with very mild or no symptoms. So let's stop with the sensational unscientific speculation and go with the science and the math from people who understand what they're doing.

  20. #40
Not that I believe some Chinese Report telling me everything is under control but that doesn't even matter anymore.
The Virus has spread worldwide and perhaps you are right that it only has a 1.4% mortality rate.
Once again that isn't the point.
How long can the American Public or World be shut down before it causes massive death??
We all understand Starvation but I am thinking about people losing their minds under house arrest.
People can't handle staying indoors like that, especially Americans.
How long before Mass Suicides start from Fear, Panic or Depression?
I could care less about the numbers of the Virus.
I want some thoughts about how long the world can sustain under lock down??
We don't have a Joseph telling us to store wheat for 7 years because of the famine that is on the way.
