Thread: Getting Ready for 2nd Wave of Wuhan Virus

Supplies are becoming readily available in stores again. For example, Costco has toilet paper, 20-lb to 50-lb bags of rice, lots of Spam, bulk packages of instant noodles, etc.

I have no idea when the next wave will start but if history is any guide, it should be in the fall like September to October. The 1918 Flu lasted until 1920. SARS lasted from 2002 to 2004. The big question mark is how lethal will the Wuhan Virus be when it comes back, e.g. the degree of mutation.

I expect the US gov’ts to reopen the economy soon. I also expect the hot summer weather to play a role in helping against Wuhan Virus.

When things return to normal in a month or two, I will stockpile and get ready for the 2nd wave. Here are a list of things I will stockpile:
    - face masks
    - hand sanitizer: small 3 ounce tubes as well as 8 ounce to a large dispenser for home use.
    - maybe toilet paper; I will investigate into an attachable bidet to cut down on toilet paper
    - food:
    a) freeze dried food (that I get from REI because of their discount policy) to Heater Meals. (I will take time during to try out various MRE but in the past, I never found a good source of MRE’s for my taste)
    b) protein drink mixes / meal replacements
    c) canned meat products like spam, canned chicken or tuna, Dinty Moore beef stew, etc

One unexpected source of food during this Wuhan Virus was 7-11 since they were open 24-7 and had cheap sandwiches & drinks. Their loyalty program helps.

I already made space in my apartment to store supplies. I got lucky this time around when I saw people stockpiling and hoarding food in late February 2020 as the first case hit Solano County in California. I was driving around looking for supplies before others cleaned out the stores by March 6. I am making sure to be better prepared for round 2.

    Good luck.

So basically, the Spanish Flu mutated and got more lethal in its 2nd wave and wiped out almost 200,000 people in US during the month of October 1918.

Will the Wuhan Virus won’t come back in October 2020? My life is valuable so I am not taking any chances.

Here are some numbers to help put things into the proper perspective.

In the 1918 Flu, people in the US were wearing face masks to help protect themselves from the flu. The US population was roughly 100 million in 1918. If say 200,000 died in October 1918, that would be 20 basis points or 0.0020 or 1/5th of 1% of Americans died that month. That is just 1 month of deaths!

Today, there are roughly 330 million Americans and if that same 20 basis point died in one month, that would be 660,000. Again, I am working with assumptions and future projections.

I don’t know what will happen, but you will see me spending the summer months preparing for it. In the best case scenario (Wuhan Flu never returned), I lost money buying needless supplies. However, I am an a risk adverse individual so I need to minimize the worst case scenario ... wearing two masks at the same time is not cheap.

Lastly, any vaccine in progress would *NOT* be ready in October 2020.
