Thread: The Lone Wolf

  1. #1
I recently stumbled across an old TV show I'd never heard of: "The Lone Wolf."

Produced in the early fifties, starring a guy I'd never heard of: very gritty and film noir.

Here is a link to an episode filmed in Las Vegas back in the day:

Cliched? You bet, but still and all an interesting time capsule.

    Thanks MrV
I had never heard of that one either. People sure did dress better in those days. And seemingly everyone smoked. Maybe another reason why they weren’t as obese as people generally are today.

There are many contributing factors, for the obesity crisis of the last few decades. The biggest culprit, is the cereal industry demonizing fats, especially saturated fats. Fats in general with the exception of Trans fats, are a lot healthier then the sugar laced, little to no nutrient cereals that most children and a lot of adults eat on a regular basis. If the average person would substitute cereal and other junk, like toast/jam for bacon and eggs and ditched empty calories like soda, the obesity crisis would be ALMOST non existent.

People spending all day on the Internet or in front of the tv doesn’t help. Complex carbs aren’t bad people just don’t move enough to offset consuming many calories. Less healthy foods are just plain cheaper too because of the way farm subsidies work, subsidies for crops used to produce corn syrup but not for things like fruit.

It's my understanding that the combination of sugars and fats is what leads to arterial damage. So, eat one or the other, if either, but not both.

Beyond this, well, get yourself to enjoy eating less, and exercising more. Including, of course, the brain.

The obesity epidemic is a global issue and shows no signs of abating, while the cause of this epidemic remains unclear. Marketing practices of energy-dense foods and institutionally-driven declines in physical activity are the alleged perpetrators for the epidemic, despite a lack of solid evidence to demonstrate their causal role. While both may contribute to obesity, we call attention to their unquestioned dominance in program funding and public efforts to reduce obesity, and propose several alternative putative contributors that would benefit from equal consideration and attention. Evidence for microorganisms, epigenetics, increasing maternal age, greater fecundity among people with higher adiposity, assortative mating, sleep debt, endocrine disruptors, pharmaceutical iatrogenesis, reduction in variability of ambient temperatures, and intrauterine and intergenerational effects, as contributing factors to the obesity epidemic are reviewed herein. While the evidence is strong for some contributors such as pharmaceutical-induced weight gain, it is still emerging for other reviewed factors. Considering the role of such putative etiological factors of obesity may lead to comprehensive, cause specific, and effective strategies for prevention and treatment of this global epidemic.

Most fat people are that way because they're lazy. Amazon.com probably contributes more to obesity than McDonald's does.

While I avoided posting on gambling boards for quite awhile, I was able to scratch the itch via investing in stocks and mutual funds: it's not the same, but it helped.

I have drastically curtailed and now eliminated casino play due to covid-19: hope to resume once I get vaccinated.

Lot of pent up demand here; it's like the "fever in my mind" that Black Oak Arkansas sang about when I was in college:

Interesting old time show. I'm surprised more of these don't show up on cable TV. Infomercials probably make more money.

Nick Kohler played by De Forrest Kelley, better known as Dr. McCoy of Star Trek.

I seen BOA at the Coliseum in Jackson, Mississippi in 1972.

I think that you must have already had the "fever", to begin with. For one thing, I don't get how others have such a hard time with the social distancing. For another, I have a lot more fun thinking about stuff, and getting some fresh air on a nice walk, than going to any casino and the like.

You should write that "I saw" BOA. I'm very surprised that no one pointed this out to you, yet.

I have no difficulty maintaining social distancing (I'm aloof by nature): I don't enjoy doing it, but I do, given I wish very much to avoid contracting the virus, mainly for my wife's sake (not the greatest of health).

No, I chafe at no longer gambling in casinos due to the virus: I want to gamble yet I choose not to.

There are a couple tribal casinos I could frequent, although my favorite 'go to' tribal joint is closed due to covid-19.

Thinking about stuff and going for walks are things I've been doing for decades anyway, so that's nothing new.

What is new are the restrictions on my choices which are both imposed upon me and voluntarily undertaken due to the virus.

It fucking sucks, can't wait for things to open up.

Being away from my son and his family hurts more than not going to casinos.

The only ray of sunshine is that I'm not losing money in the casinos like I typically do (not always, which kept me coming back).

Whatever, got to keep hunkering down and weather the storm.

The American obesity problem is a dream-come-true for the multi-billion-dollar, completely ridiculous and extraordinary time-wasting "weight loss" industry. It ends up being all nonsense and BS once people finally realize that all you have to do is MOVE MORE & EAT LESS. Very simple, yet most are too stupid to comprehend.

Move more eat less certainly would improve things immensely. The daily nutritional choices that most people make, who are suffering from obesity( legitimate obesity not STUPID inaccurate BMI) are MORE important then activity. I'm not knocking the importance of physical activity it's surely necessary, but what you put in your pie hole, has more effect then people realize. The numbers are only the beginning, there are a lot of skinny fat people, walking around who are healthy on the "scale" but look like shit with there shirt off. On the flip side, there are "obese " people who are 6"2 225 with a 34 waist such as myself who are on the cusp of "obesity". Classic example, of numbers can be deceiving and the situation is more complex, then just MOVE MORE EAT LESS. Physical activity as important as it is, takes a back seat to overall NUTRITION.

I’m not fat I’m just big boned.

A lot of people, still have the old school view of scale weight determining how fit you are. Body fat percentage and Waist to Height ratio, is way more relevant then total body weight. How you feel/look, clothes fitting properly, matters most. Bone density, muscle mass can skew the scale a tremendous amount.

Same. 6 miles and my feet start to hurt a little. Finding the right shoes is a challenge, what’s good for one person’s foot completely different from another.

Check out the variety of orthopedic insoles available, e.g. on Amazon, to cushion your feet.

    my favorite: Superfeet.

Spenco is fine also, at half the price.
