"More importantly, mickey thought 8-4 was two games over .500. Argued about it. C'mon, man. Nothing can top that for math expertise. If GWAE ever has you on again, you can be sure I'll be calling in with that gem.'Nuff said." REDIETZ

    Mattress Mack annoys me.

First off, it's important to understand that the mattress industry has a bit of sleaze to it. It's one of the few retail industries left in the US where there's bargaining at stores, and where you get a horrible deal if you DON'T bargain. The same mattress is sold at different stores under different names, in order to keep people from price shopping. Many mattresses claim to be "back supporting" when they're the opposite. They try to sell you overpriced, poor-value "protection" plans. The list goes on and on...

Anyway, Mattress Mack is a walking gimmick. The large bets he makes on major sporting events are simply just a hedge against a "your mattress is free if X team wins" gimmick, and is really no different than a bookie laying off action at a casino. When it's all said and done, you're not getting a good deal at Mack's store, as the price of all of this gimmickry is figured into what he charges you.

It's annoying to me when I see articles about his huge Superbowl or World Series bets, because he's not risking anything. He has a "bet" on the other side regarding giving refunds for mattresses, so either way he comes out the same. So why is this news? It's not like a really rich guy laying $11 million on his favorite team.

And while his generosity regarding opening up his showroom for people displaced by disasters seems nice, this is also a calculated business move. It gets him great press, which translates into more profits later. It doesn't really cost him much, other than the cleanup of the place when it's all over. The showroom pieces are always sold for a discount later, so it's not like he's letting people degrade the value of new furniture.

In general, I'm not impressed by anything "nice" someone does if they have a history of gimmickry and attention whoring.

I guess it is impossible for bad people to do nice things once in awhile.
I suppose once you go too far, you have no chance of redemption.
Where is the line drawn in the sand and who gets to say which side you are on?

It's not really about bad people doing nice things. I don't even think Matress Mack is bad... just a hustler.

It's more about calling out a supposedly selfless act as something more likely to be self-serving. I'm not saying it's bad that he's doing it. It's obviously helping people, but it's also helping Mack. When I read a story like this, I think, "I'm happy for these people having somewhere warm to go, but I'm not getting on the 'Praise Mack' train!"

Well okay, Mr self-righteous Dan Druff, who appears to be drawing a line in the sand, and has his limits pertaining to other's morals. Meanwhile back at home on the range "vegas casino talk" Dan finally gives an opinion on Rob Singer's stories but is completely silent when any mention of the word MDawg is brought up. I'm glad Dan that you question the morals of the mattress Mack's of the world, but in my mind, your word is rather shallow as was suggested in post #4. Just like mattress Mack business is business right Dan!

Dan, okay; Wizard, and ilk, not okay.

Poker, at least, requires half a brain. On the other hand, talking shit ... .
Every one /everyone knows it all; yet, no thing /nothing is truly known by any one /anyone. Similarly, the suckers think that they win, but, the house always wins, unless to hand out an even worse beating.
