Thread: Vegas Heat (not casino heat)

  1. #1
Today is day 3 of 6 straight 115+ degree days. Forcast is also for 117 or 118 (depending on what forcast) for today and tomorrow. The all time official record high for Vegas is 117. Should hit or break that.

We usually only have 1 of these 115 degree days periods per year and already had one back in June. I was lucky as I left on a pre-planned trip so only had to endure a couple days of that one, and thought I lucked out for the year. Not to be.

The problem with these 115+ days for a stretch at a time is the night time low is only in the 90's. Last night 95. A night time low of 95!! Then the sun comes up and off and climbing. Central AC in condo does not work great above 110 degrees. Cools off a bit, but has a hard time keeping up.

    Ahhh Vegas in the summertime.

That shit was brutal. I kept going up into the spring mountains during the day since it’s 30-40 degrees cooler up there but then it’s still 110+ when you come back down....finally just got out of there and drove to CO.

Las Vegas beat Portland by only one degree; we hit 116 recently.

Wait a minute: Las Vegas is in the freakin' desert; Portland is near the ocean and is known for its moderate climate without extremes of temperature.

    What's up with that?

What are you talking about? Accuweather says Portland will be 85 degrees today, 86 degrees tomorrow.

Ok, I see it. You are talking a couple weeks ago.

Other than the air conditioning problem I mentioned earlier, it really doesn't effect me that much. Maybe I opt for garage type parking (shade) instead of parking lot at a casino, which might be a few more steps...but in the shade. I can't sit out on the balcony like I do most days because even though there is a little breeze most days, it is 115 degree air blowing. Other than that, doesn't effect me too much.

I live with my brother and a high school friend of his and we all grew up near Dayton Beach Florida. I will take the 110 degree Las Vegas, even occasional 115 degrees, over Daytona 90 degrees, 75% humidity any time. There is a reason why I spent all my time in the summer surfing in the ocean.

The extreme heat event we recently had in Oregon by report killed over one hundred people.

It was very oppressive, especially for we who have never seen anything like it; I mean really, ten degrees or so higher than the previous record high?

    WTF!?

One thing I like about Portland is the moderate climate with its cloudy days and frequent light rain: perfect for growing plants.

Our home was professionally landscaped by a prior owner and has a wide variety of plants which did not do well in the heat.

The ferns and rhododendrons in particular crisped up rather badly.

I have a waterfall into a pond and I feared the heat and sun would cause an algae bloom; it didn't happen, but only because I use UV / physical filtration plus algae preventative chemicals.

Tomorrow we're playing ladder ball in the back yard: cheaper than going to a casino.

Ladder ball is an addictive game once you get the hang of it, but it requires a lush lawn and reasonable temperatures to play comfortably, and those are two things in short supply in Las Vegas.

Why does ladder ball require a lawn at all? You're just trying to get 2 balls attached by a string to wrap around rungs on a stand above the ground.

Maybe croquet would be nice to have a yard.

You may have a point there; I've only played on grass and in my mind playing on pavement could be problematical as the hard surface could cause the balls to roll quite a ways as opposed to being stopped by the grass.

But hey, if that's all you've got give it a shot.

It's what you make it: easy, non-competitive or as my buddy and I play, cut-throat competitive, no quarter given or asked.

Great potential for betting I suppose, but we don't.

I wish there were leagues, I'd play in one.

Beats the hell out of bowling.

"Beats the hell out of bowling." --->

    Battle of the Big Hole.

    https://anagram-solver.net/Beats%20t....?partial=true

The Battle of the Big Hole was fought in Montana, August 9–10, 1877, between the U.S. Army and the Nez Perce tribe of Native Americans during the Nez Perce War. Both sides suffered heavy casualties. The Nez Perce withdrew in good order from the battlefield and continued their long fighting retreat that would result in their attempt to reach Canada and asylum.
Note the reference to Montana. And, the asylum.

So many vibes here and there that it's hard to keep 'em straight. It's like the (nihilistic) "spiritual" peace and tranquility MrV nonsense ended up Crimm's thread, and, versa. Two replies I made at the same time. Lol.

Meanwhile, highs in the 60’s in Lincoln City.

KJ, get a portable air conditioner or two you can push around the condo.

What they call raging hot temps in Montana really ain’t that bad. 50’s and 60’s early morning. Late morning 70’s. High 95 by mid afternoon.By 7 PM temp is dropping. Back down in 60’s by 11 PM, 50’s early morning, 40’s in some towns.

I shouldn't have to do that. It is supposed to be a "luxury" condo building and that includes AC.

And the AC works fine up until about 110 and then it struggles a bit. When I say struggles I mean temp is 80. I like 70-72. lol

Yesterday I found that making sure all windows blinds and drapes are closed keeping the sun out helped a little. By 8-9 pm it is working fine again

Should only be 2 days of this extreme heat.

I thought countries to the north of the U.S. like Canada and Montana were supposed to be cooler. I thought they were the places people go to escape the heat.

That is a joke, I am aware Montana is actually a "territory" of the U.S.

You just figured out yesterday that the sun is hot and warms things up,
and that it's cooler in the shade?

Now that is retarded....what do you have, zero common sense?
