Thread: Social media Vegas tip shaming back en vogue

  1. #1
VitalVegas, aka Scott Roeben, has been doing a fairly good job lately bringing Vegas rumors to the table. Sometimes he ends up being wrong and/or getting bad info, but he's increased his accuracy rate, and he has indeed been the first to report a lot of casino and Vegas-related news.

However, I have been unimpressed with his recent tip shaming routine. He's been at it for a little while now, perhaps because his girlfriend has been working recently at casinos in service positions. (I've communicated with her somewhat, and she seems fairly nice.)

He blew up somewhat when he broke the story that some Raiders players were being rude to service employees and being super stingy with tipping, despite their large contracts. He got shout outs on mainstream sports shows, such as Jim Rome, which understandably got him excited.

Unfortunately, this has led to even more tip shaming, like this bad take:

I really, really, really hate entitled slot attendants or dealers who feel they're entitled to 4-figure tips just because someone wins a "jackpot". This is incorrect thinking for so many reasons.

Imagine laying out $200 to someone just processing paperwork, and then they go and bitch at you behind your back to someone like VitalVegas. Brutal. It's likely that Vital found out about this because he's at Circa a lot, as he seems to have some deal to help promote them.

I think I've mentioned it before, but I know a woman who is a (now former) Indian casino dealer, who bitched on Facebook that she "only" got a $500 tip when a guy at her table hit some big jackpot. I couldn't help but respond and tell her how wrong she was, but she just wouldn't "get" it.

No need to legitimize/acknowledge that piece of human shit.

Someone's net worth shouldn't be any indication on how much (if at all) one tips another. Screw these tip whores I say.

LOL for using the word horseshittery, but what a complete entitled asshole for scolding the anonymous woman for tipping "only" 200$. Next time they should be given " Crowe Diddly" squat instead of 2 hundy.

2 totally different issues at play here. The slot clerks do not depend on tips and are paid a salary. Any tip should be appreciated and is a bonus, regardless of the amount of the jackpot won.

But the issue with the Raiders players and other tourists not tipping servers and bartenders absolutely should be called out. I agree with Scott and his stance on this. It has been a huge issue since last year as lowlifes are stiffing bartenders or leaving a dollar or 2 on bar tabs of large amounts. Anyone in America knows a tip is expected at a minimum of 15% and more if you appreciate the service. Sounds simple, but if you can’t afford the tip, don’t visit the bar or restaurant. Go to Walgreens and drink in your room.

If anybody thinks I will tip them on a $100+ meal that cost $7 or less to prepare and serve in high end joints has another thing coming. Time for jackasses like Gordon Ramsay to split HIS net worth with his employees!

    Fuck them and their "expectations."

Tipping is NOT required, and failure to tip should NOT be deemed inappropriate.

    Tipping is OPTIONAL.

    What, Me Worry?

I used to tip $20 on hand pays. Now I tip $0. Because too many of the attendants would show their unappreciation. So I figure if they are going to be mad at 20 they may as well be mad at 0.

Really, the customer should receive a tip for the inconvenience.

I tip in restaurants because it is expected. Usually 20%. But I would sure like to know how Europe is able to pay their wait staff and we can't in the US. Meals don't cost more there.

For real tho the tipping topic had been beat to death on every gambling forum ever

I give what ever I feel is justified depending on certain variables. Fuck a certain percentage based on societal norms. I also don't hesitate to give her/him a big fat goose egg if it's warranted.

I agree with that. I really don't see the difference between someone bringing a $100 steak or a $10 omelet to the table. So, I kind of came up with $5 regardless of bill and a $20 cap. For the most part it tends to work out to about the 20%. But if I go and have some $250 comped meal I am not leaving $50. I leave the $20 cap.

    This is per person.

$2 or $3 is plenty even if it costs $200.

A new thing they are trying to pull here in Chicago now. I have encountered it twice. First time a moderately priced higher end place that had just re-opened after COVID. I had received an Xmas present gift card for this place. Great meal-about $150 each for gourmet meal and wine pairing and absolutely great service. On the bill was a 20% charge for health insurance for the servers and other employees. At first I thought it was the tip added on. But as I read it I told my wife I adored our server but I am not tipping 40% on a meal. So a great server got stiffed because the 20% was already on there.

Second time wife and I were guests at a dinner where it was $275 per person plus a wine pairing of $175 per person. Luckily, not on my dime. Again, impeccable service and food--14 courses if you like that kind of meal (not really my thing). This time the bill added the same 20% and an explanation that this went to health insurance etc. and specifically stated that the server does not get a cent of it and that you should still tip. I do not know what my host did.

I dare you to keep going back to the same restaurant over and over again while you keep stiffing the wait staff.
Stiffing Slot Attendants isn't so bad because they don't handle your food.
But keep doing that constantly in the same place for months on end and see if it doesn't create problems for you.

    100% my attitude now.

I was also tipping $20 and getting sour looks and grunts as they walked away. I figured I'm not tipping someone $20 to hate me and talk shit behind my back. They can do that for free.

I'm going back and forth with people in that VitalVegas thread regarding the tipping.

Some are just acting absurd, believing that 10% is the proper tip amount for any jackpot (lol), and that anything less than 1% is completely rude and inappropriate.

    Get the fuck outta here.

Jackpost handpays are NOT a service. It is something required by federal law. While I'm not against tipping a nominal amount to these people, I'm not handing them hundreds of dollars (especially not thousands) just because they happen to be processing paperwork for a larger amount of money. Either way, they're still processing simple paperwork that takes a few minutes.

Here's an essay I wrote about American tip culture, and why it needs to go away. I wrote this last year, just days before people learned about COVID. Ah, the good ol' days!
