Thread: Self exclusion?

  1. #1
Hey, y'all. I know this probably isn't the right place to ask, but I figured I'd give it a shot anyway. My family and I moved to the LV area a few years ago. It was a logical decision, albeit a difficult one to make. My dad got a job with the big industry out in the desert, so we had to move. He started making good money, and everything was stellar for a while.

Then, something changed. He'd come home later than usual, look like he'd been through hell and back, and would often just go to sleep. My mom thought he started cheating, but it made no sense to me. The look on his face was a look of a defeated man. The money became super tight, despite him getting a raise. That's when I knew. He was gambling it all on the strip.

Now, I'm not here to pass judgment, but my old man obviously has a problem. I've been looking into ways of helping him out, and one theme keeps repeating - self-exclusion. Everywhere I go I find guides like this one https://www.casinoshortlist.org/edit...ble-safely.asp where they eventually mention self-exclusion. But, from what I can tell this is a feature only found in online casinos.

Is there a similar mechanism in place for regular casinos? Can I go up and down the strip and have my dad banned from entering these establishments? Can he do it himself? I'm trying to figure out a way to get him away from gambling, at least for a little while, and any advice on how to do so would be more than appreciated.

It be kind of hard to force what seems to be kind of a normal Adult to put themselves on the Self Exclusion. IIRC, someone who had Power Of Attorney was able to put their mentally incapacitated older Family Member on the Self Exclusion list to stop them from Gambling away their Retirement Money. If you can prove your Dad is mentally incapacitated, you have a REALLY good shot at getting him on the Self Exclusion list.

On the other hand, you can just be like,"Dad, you're hurting yourself and us with your Gambling Addiction.. We're worried about you. Please go on the Self Exclusion list," and hope your heartfelt plea for him to go on the Self Exclusion list will get to him and he puts himself on the Self Exclusion list.

Take comfort in the fact that no one is actually backing up his wishes to have you permanantly banned.

Wise is knowing a Tomato doesn't belong in a fruit salad.

Yes, all casinos have self-exclusion lists in Nevada.

However, he will need to put himself on there. You will have a hard time getting him excluded against his will.

I doubt you can get him excluded against his well, absent a court order as part of a conservatorship or guardianship.

Have you even talked to him about it?

    What did he say?

Otherwise, consider an intervention if you and the family feel it is necessary.

Contact Gamblers Anonymous in Las Vegas and start from there.
"More importantly, mickey thought 8-4 was two games over .500. Argued about it. C'mon, man. Nothing can top that for math expertise. If GWAE ever has you on again, you can be sure I'll be calling in with that gem.'Nuff said." REDIETZ
