I was at CBS News in the late 1970s. I didn't get the chance to work with Mike Wallace but I was able to sit in on some of the meetings where the top execs discussed having Mike replace Walter Cronkite as anchor of the CBS Evening News.

Mike didn't want the job. He wanted to stick with 60 Minutes.

I wonder how television news history would have been altered had Mike taken over when Walter retired? I wonder if the later upheaval at CBS News would have been averted?
