Thread: Alaska trip

  1. #1
Photos from my Alaska trip I recently returned from. Was one of the few places I’ve never been in the US along with Hawaii, which was the original 2021 plan. But since Hawaii was dicking around all year with testing for Covid and other regulations, we bailed. Alaska is open for travel and semi affordable with no masks other than public transportation.
Flew into Anchorage from Dallas on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner with layback seats and sleeper cabins, then spent days in both Denali along with Seward. Did a lot of the tourist stuff but also hit 5 breweries along with a few other bars. Other than pull tabs Alaska is one of the few states left with no gambling.

And for Axel and other fisherman, the Salmon were running and spawning.

Great pics ! I found it to be very expensive overall bang for buck wise ( value). It was worth going once, I will not return, too many other areas and countries to travel to. I rank it 3rd nicest state overall after Colorado and California( never seen Hawaii only state).

Thanks, I have a few states I never visited but not in a hurry to make a special trip to hit.

North Dakota (but love SD), Iowa, Minnesota (no hurry), Indiana, Arkansas, Washington state and Hawaii. We were going to do Seattle a couple years ago but couldn’t justify the room rates.

Our goal is to drink a beer in all 50 states so planning a trip over from Idaho on a northern Montana trip.

The problem is we end up loving places we visit and keep going back. Like Wyoming, so much to see.

Great pics, Boz. Gambling in private is legal in Alaska. No laws against playing cards or dice with each other for money. But it's illegal for games to be raked or to sell anyone drinks while they are gambling. Plenty of illegal gambling in the bars, pool, cribbage, dice games, that no one ever gets prosecuted for.
"More importantly, mickey thought 8-4 was two games over .500. Argued about it. C'mon, man. Nothing can top that for math expertise. If GWAE ever has you on again, you can be sure I'll be calling in with that gem.'Nuff said." REDIETZ

Boz, you should put a cruise ship tour of the inside passage of southeast Alaska on your bucket list. Very scenic part of Alaska. Hit towns like Ketchikan, Wrangell, Sitka, Juneau, Haines, Skagway.

Definitely would like to do that in the future. I knew Alaska was huge but seeing a sign that said 967 miles to Dutch Harbor helped put it into perspective. That’s basically Philadelphia to Miami and it seemed close. Crazy.

Also didn’t know you couldn’t drive to Juneau even if you wanted, no roads get there. Did see some private tours that take you to the Arctic Circle, long days drive but sounded interesting. Not many people can say they visited it.

Really liked Seward, small fishing town that almost totally shuts down 9 months a year other than locals.

Also Thanks to everyone for the comments.

Ketchikan, Wrangel and Sitka are on islands so no roads to them either. A road could possibly be built to tie Juneau into Skagway which would tie it in with the north american road system but it's never been funded. Possibly because of the Alaska Marine Highway which is the ferry system that ties the towns together. The ferries haul people and cars.

There are two roads out of southeast Alaska. The road from Haines up to Haines Junction on the Alaska Highway about 150 miles west of Whitehorse, Yukon. The other road is from Skagway up to the Alaska Highway at Whitehorse. An oddity is Haines and Skagway are only 17 air miles apart but it's a 400 mile drive by the road system.

I was up or down the Alaska Highway 11 times, and I used the Alaska Marine Highway quite a bit, back in the 70's and 80's.
