Thread: Strange Week Continued

  1. #1
I mentioned in another thread that I had a very strange Monday. I bet more on Monday than I have any day in two years, and none of those games were underdogs (I take many more underdogs than faves). I didn't take these teams because I really liked the games. I took them because the lines had to move, in my opinion.

So tonight the first one goes off. I'll report how they do. I have Coastal -3 (-120) for a full normal wager, then I bought back 60% of the wager on Appalachian State +6 (-120). This will likely be a series of asymmetric middle shots, so we'll see how much money I blow this week trying to hit one. Most will be slanted to the original wager.

Appalachian State, by the way, is a short drive from here, over the proverbial hill and dale. They call their defense "The Legion of Boone," which is a take-off on the old Seahawks defense "Legion of Boom" moniker blended with the fact the town is Boone, NC. Being a comic book buff, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that both have their origin in The Legion of Doom, which is a DC comics super-villain group.

I don't normally post plays, but this was a very strange week with some odd opening lines that really had to move, so it'll be an interesting thing to follow. I cannot believe after Appalachian State was drilled by Louisiana a week ago that this line didn't open a tad higher. I would have frankly put the line at -6 to start. Yeah, perhaps -5 1/2.

Coastal is a mean bunch, and if they get a chance to tag on a late score, they generally go out of their way to do it.

Well, that wasn't helpful. I took a half-unit loss on the asymmetric middle shot last night. Appalachian State played a wonderful game. Brice played his best game at QB this year, and probably of his career. App State pulled off a fabulous onside kick trailing 14-7 mid-second quarter. It was a thing of beauty, requiring a cross-field 20-yard kick to a particular area that App State knew would be vacated a count early. And finally, I don't think Coastal's defensive starters had played nearly this many significant snaps in a game. It looked like App State was much better conditioned down the stretch.

I have a bunch going tonight that I will lay out later. I took all college faves, as I reported earlier, except I did take a stab at the NFL underdog on Tuesday. I realize that NFL games almost never middle (and that therefore any attempt is a bad idea), but understanding Mayfield's injury, I was pretty sure no matter how much Mayfield said it was his decision and that he was playing...he wasn't playing. So taking Denver +4 knowing the line was likely to nosedive was the easy part. Now we wait for the line to bottom out. It's actually a bit tricky, as Bridgewater is also banged up and not a lock to play. But Drew Lock can play, so we'll see where the line goes.

I got my $1,000 bet on this game tonight. I have Denver at +5. I just looked at the sports book now and Denver is now at +1.

Well, you got a helluva number at +5. I don't often get beaten in terms of shopping, but you did it.

I got very lucky with my wagering on these asymmetric middles thanks to that Denver game. I mentioned I'd try to middle this in the earlier post, and I wound up buying back 30% of my bet on the money line at -120 and 30% more at -125. And hit the damn thing, which is a real NFL rarity.

So I picked up a tad more than 1 1/2 units on the Denver/Cleveland game. I picked up four-tenths of a unit on an ugly SMU -13 (-120)/Tulane +14 and +15 (-120) mess with more on SMU. Then I picked up four tenths of a unit on a Florida Atlantic -6 and Charlotte +8 (-120) asymmetric shot. But I lost six tenths of a unit on a ULL -17 (-120)/Arkansas State +19 attempt. I thought all of these lines would move more than they did, especially on game day. But no -- they froze this morning and started dropping.

Tallying it up with the previous 1/2 unit loss on the App State/Coastal game, that comes to:

Up the rough equivalent of 1 1/4 games for the week. I will certainly take it. None of these lines moved quite as much as I thought they would.

I still have two more asymmetric middles shots that'll wrap Saturday. I took Michigan -21 early and Ohio State -19. So I'll hedge substantially with both of those and see what happens.

Can't believe the Denver thing middled. As Hannibal Smith used to say, "I love it when a plan comes together."

Yeah, I won $952.38 on my bet. I thought Cleveland was going to score again, but they ran out the clock. Even a field goal would have made my bet lose.

Oh, I watched the end. You know, for a game where Denver never really stopped Cleveland, it was a very low score. Something to keep in mind when looking at totals for these two teams down the road. The Bronco defense is playing lousy. Surtain, the corner, has less interest in tackling somebody than Deion in his prime. Anytime you run to his side, you are essentially running against a defense a man short. I saw him make zero effort on a couple of plays where he was within two feet of the running back and simply stood there without closing at all. Seriously, he just stands there if you watch the replays.

Picked up about 3/10 of a unit on the Michigan/NW asymmetric middle attempt. I had Michigan -21 for a unit and bought back NWestern +24 (-120) for 2/3 unit. The final shot is Ohio State -19 for a unit with Indiana +22 (-120) for 2/3 of a unit.

That's a wrap for line move wagering this past week, which was my heaviest in two years. Got all seven line moves correct, and got extremely fortunate with the Cleve/Den middle to post a nice profit.

    And on we go....

Redietz, do you consider yourself a professional sports bettor. Have you made money sports betting?

I came across this sports betting job to get an idea what they make. It appears this is working for someone else and not someone out on their own, but still interesting.

While ZipRecruiter is seeing annual salaries as high as $102,500 and as low as $20,000, the majority of Sports Betting salaries currently range between $42,000 (25th percentile) to $84,000 (75th percentile) with top earners (90th percentile) making $100,000 annually across the United States.

I just won another $1,000 free sports bet playing another great blackjack promotion. I bet it on the Packers game tomorrow. I took the under at 48. I see the under has now dropped to 47.5.

I'm a professional sports handicapper. I founded something called Integrity Sports back in 1979. I've been in The Wise Guys Contest, which is invitation only, for about 30 years. I actually worked with/for Billy Walters about 20 years ago.

One of these days, I'll get the old copy of Who's Who in Sports Gambling from 1984 and post some of the bios on here. If you go to the wayback machine, there will be pages from my old IntegritySports.com site that answer most questions.

I think most of the "sports betting jobs" listed are probably working for various tipster companies and trying to sell selections to people. I don't think they're referencing income from actually betting.

Best of luck with the Packers Under. My various angles have no opinion on the game, but I can't knock the Under. That was a key number to get for your Under, a really big deal. One thing I mentioned to other people doing the free play thing is that you have to verify what happens with a push -- do you get the free play back for another use, is it forfeited, or is there some other arrangement? That's something to check in advance since different places may have different rules. I know one offshore that automatically gives you the free play back, and I know another one that also will, but you have to specifically email them with the details and request it. If they don't get the email, you miss out.

Just pick a half point line and make a $500 cash bet on the other side at some other site. Profit regardless of the result.
