Thread: Responses to Anti-Sports Gambling Op-Ed

  1. #1
Bloomberg Opinion published an anti-sports gambling op-ed back in December, written by Timothy O'Brien, a fine writer and executive editor there.

    https://www.pressdemocrat.com/articl...can-bet-on-it/

I responded with both my own short op-ed and a brief analytic follow-up.

    https://theskepticalgambler.blogspot...ddictions.html

    And the brief analysis.

Wonderful. But where are your pre-game picks? You know, like Cincinnati to "win it all"? Or how about what place you would have finished in the Circa Survivor contest if you had the thou to enter?

At some point, who knows when, it will dawn on Rob that I really do not tell people who to bet and have not for about a decade.

Of course, the line above will be a great mystery to Rob. God bless him.

Rob, why don't you tell the folks about the times I tried to "sell you picks?" Let's hear the details.

He's not asking you who to bet on, or to tell him who who to bet on.

He's asking you to post your picks before the games are played...like Druff does,
or screenshots of betting tickets...like monet has done.

What if Druff were selling his pics to some people but publishing his pics here for free? And they found out about it. What would happen?
"More importantly, mickey thought 8-4 was two games over .500. Argued about it. C'mon, man. Nothing can top that for math expertise. If GWAE ever has you on again, you can be sure I'll be calling in with that gem.'Nuff said." REDIETZ

Everyone here knows that when you sell a sports pick you are nothing but a low down scamming son of a bitch.
Selling a sports pick or charging someone a vig if they win from your sports pick is Pure Evil.
I wouldn't even expect that Evil from kewlJ.
    Sickening that its even Legal.
No different than scamming ploppies at the machines with someone tailing behind to scoop up the multipliers or progressives.
    Honest Advantage Players... HA!

Isn't that what the touts do? They publish some picks, and sell some picks.

Does anyone find it odd that Rob Singer is the only poster on all of these forums over all of these years who claims that I "tried to sell him picks?" And that the PMs, emails, text messages, or phone numbers involved have been washed out to sea?

Seems a little odd to me. I mean, of all the posters on all the forums, I target Rob Singer to "sell my picks." Makes perfect sense, I guess. He could probably take those picks and double them up.

It's as Boz says. I'm a helluva businessman.

A wise man once said that unless you have inside information betting sports is purely for fun.

Affleck has a net worth north of 100 million; I'm sure he'll be fine.

My take is that your responses are basically good for how short they are and also the fact that you're taking a nearly indefensible position. The good news is that you're playing offense, since you shot second and are basically just chipping holes in what the O'Brien said.

Also, "PressDemocrat," fucking gag me. Not exactly where I'd be going for my sports, so I'd likely never see the article in the first place.

I'm talking about the same pick being sold to one group but given free to another group. What would the group that paid think about it being given for free to another group

The author called Affleck a drunk but conveniently left out that Affleck has been banned from playing blackjack because he is an effective card counter.

It depends on the value of the pick to those who paid for it, and whether they know what anybody else paid for it.

But Rob didn't ask for picks that have been offered for sale.

Those contest picks from years ago that the ditz brags about being available to the public...did somebody object to them being published?

Excellent, mickey. I should have included exactly that line. Bad exclusion on my part.

Usually, I don't go back and edit anything as a rule of thumb, so I guess I will let my error of exclusion stand. But if I do an add-on or follow-up, I'll state that and give you credit for the observation. It was a bad miss on my part.

So "Singer" knocks me for not providing free picks to him, but also knocks me for allegedly "trying to sell him picks." Hmmm. The difference seems to be price.

Coach, I love you, man. That's a really succinct a way of putting it. Thanks. I'm not sure I would have ever come up with that. I'm dense.

Man, that Singer is one tight AP dude. Kudos to him. That fuel bill for the Newell taught him real frugality.

Note to non-sports bettors: To put things in perspective, most sites "selling picks" online these charge between $10 and $20 a pop, with an emphasis on the low end, and they don't charge you if the game loses.

I don't know how these pile of sports handicappers behave all-around when it comes to their "picks". But it's one thing to perpetually toot your own horn about decades-past performances from obscure contests etc., and quite another to put up some pre-game picks with an explanation or two. The only one I've seen, which was either by mistakenly talking out of turn, or was done with a purpose and a whole lotta prayers, was his touting of Cincinnati to "win it all" in NCAA football. Poof.

Why am I the only one of maybe TWELVE people to get solicited by redeitz' sports punks? Well guess what--he didn't expect to get excoriated for that nonsense that quickly, so he had his team pull back the reins like any wounded businessman would do.

It also makes no sense that he wouldn't accept my amateur vs. pro 32-game NFL challenge that had no money or conditions involved other than he pick the source of the lines for both of us. How much simpler could it have been anyway?

Agree with the poster who called touts who sell picks as the scum of the earth, who need other people's money because they lose their picks. After all, if their for-sale picks are such "locks", then why not just bet MORE on them instead of selling them?

I don't know what, "Most," do or don't do, but the, "Guarantee," on most of the ones that I have seen is that they will toss you a free pick if the pick you buy loses. A Free Pick, of course, that could also lose.

Singer, can you stop saying shit I mostly agree with all the time? It's getting really annoying. JK

As far as Redietz soliciting you, you're making the accusation, so screenshots or it didn't happen.

I don't think he was specifically touting Cincinnati to win it all. If I understand his angle on the Cincinnati thing, it's that he believed they had a reliable enough path to the College Football Playoffs which is what caused the futures line to be undervalued and would, if they indeed were to make the Playoffs, set up a hedge (either by picking other futures lines or by hedging directly against Cincinnati by taking the opponent on the ML) that would enable a profit to be locked up. It's definitely still a gamble, don't get me wrong, because if they take an L early in the season that would prevent them from even making the Playoffs, then the futures ticket becomes worthless in all respects. Redietz can certainly correct me if I am misunderstanding what I think his angle was.

He could certainly have accepted that challenge, but 32 games is too insignificant a sample size to conclusively prove anything. I posted my very solid lifetime record (with Picks all being posted in advance of any games kicking off) over 671 games, but someone who doesn't even watch football could easily out pick me in 32 games. I don't think a high percentage of people are going to out pick me in 671 games, but I don't KNOW that (my record over 671 has a roughly 3% chance of just being variance) and I also don't sell or even offer any picks, obviously.

Why sell Picks as opposed to bet more on them? You've got me, man. I have no idea. The only argument that some people have in their defense is that they might have difficulty getting the money down or getting as much down as they want to...there have certainly been documented instances of winning sports bettors being cut off or given absurdly low betting limits.

Has a Man the Right to Let Himself Be Put to Death for the Truth?

    https://anagram-solver.net/that%20Si...0?partial=true

The first essay is entitled Has a Man the Right to Let Himself Be Put to Death for the Truth? The essay outlines the idea and practice of martyrdom in Christianity and whether or not the martyr has the right to die for truth. The argument in the essay parallels both Kierkegaard's relationship to Regine Olsen and the Christian image of Jesus's crucifixion.

The essay's conclusion is that humans should not die for truth but instead be lovingly concerned for others. Kierkegaard would later address this problem again in his essay Armed Neutrality, which is signed under his own name.
But, what when the truth is that all that matters is our relationship with others?

My previous post on the matter, from just yesterday.

Every one /everyone knows it all; yet, no thing /nothing is truly known by any one /anyone. Similarly, the suckers think that they win, but, the house always wins, unless to hand out an even worse beating.

Rob, tell you what, you provide the PMs, emails, text messages, phone numbers, or any proof that I ever, just once, "tried to sell you picks," not only will I give you 5K, I'll never post another word.

Rob just likes attention. This offer has been on the table for what, three years now? C'mon, man, at least make some shit up and post photos of the bills of sale. I mean, you have as much evidence of me "selling you picks" as I do of you "offering to lick my ass after I've eaten jalapeno nachos."

Mission, I can't vouch for your exposure subset, obviously, but the Playbook standard set-up, which was the dominant reasonably above board company, was a pay-after-you-win arrangement. They publish their own full-size pre-season football issues that sell nationally. You can pick one up on a newsstand and see if they still feature that as SOP. If you check them out, they are the highest profile, legitimate business doing this stuff.

Note: I've explained on this forum, half a dozen times, why handicappers sell selections. It's AP 101. if anyone actually wants to know, PM me. It basically flips the odds, which is pretty obvious.
