Thread: Casino NBA arena planned for south strip

  1. #1
Who are they people? The Oak view group is planning a casino and 20,000 Arena for a future NBA team at Blue Diamond and LVB. Blue Diamond is a couple miles south of Mandalay Bay. It is the road the Silverton is on, for reference. This site is right at Las Vegas Blvd and Blue Diamond.

I also wasn't aware that NBA and NHL teams no longer share an arena and teams need their own arena. When did that start being the case?

Looks like sin city has hit "critical mass" size viz. siting professional teams.

Today NHL and NFL, tomorrow NBA: can MLB be far behind?
    What, Me Worry?

I think yes and no to that size thing. The Vegas metropolitan area is just over 2 million people. That consists of the small city of Las Vegas (downtown area), all of the strip and surrounding area which is technically Clark County Unincorporated, the growing suburban areas of Summerlyn and Henderson which is much bigger than the little town of Henderson and the North Las Vegas area.

So this 2 million people Metroplitan area is very compatible with most other major cities. The problem is there is nothing further out. Take Philly for instance, the 2+ million metropolitan area consists of the city of Philadelphia, 4 suburban Pa counties and South Jersey. But the sports teams draw from an even larger pool. People come from as far away as Harrisburg to the west, and Allentown/Scranton to the north, Wilmington Delaware, and the Jersey Shore area. That is like a 75 mile radius.

It is that extended area that Las Vegas doesn't have. Once you get outside the metropolitan area of 2 million, there is nothing but ranches and cacti.

KJ, you are overlooking the obvious.

Thousands of visitors come to Las Vegas daily, and many of them will want to see a game, and the casinos will comp preferred players generously.

From what I can tell NHL and NFL are doing fine, so why wouldn't other sports do OK as well?

Football, I don't think is a problem. There are only 8 home games. Fan's from Oakland are currently making the trip like it is still their team. Also visiting team fan bases will plan a Road trip around a game at Las Vegas. I saw that last year, when I attended an Eagles Game vs the Raiders in Las Vegas. A quarter of the fans in the stadium were Eagles fans dressed in Eagles garb.

In Hockey, the Golden Knights lucked into a surprisingly good situation, as they were the first professional team in Vegas and went all the way to the Stanley cup finals in their first year. Nobody thought they would be that good, that fast. Now they are not as good. Struggling to make the playoffs. Put together a few of these mediocre or even bad seasons and we will see if they are still such a hot ticket at those high prices.

Hockey, basketball, baseball. These sports have 40 home games, 80 in the case of baseball. That is when you find out if the city can really support the teams., especially if there are more than one team in town. That is when those fan's dollars start getting spread a little thinner.

To be honest, out of the 4 sports, hockey is the one I would have thought would not be that well received. And it still may turn out that way once there is competition from the other sports. My reason being, Vegas population is a lot like Pheonix, which doesn't support their hockey team very well. Large Latino population. There isn't a lot of ice hockey played in Mexico and central/South America. It is not their "natural" sport. But again, the Golden Knights had the advantage of going first and being good right away which built a fan base.

Call it the Robert Sarver Syndrome (owner of the Phoenix Suns) who refuses to play nice with the Coyotes. Which is why they play a huge distance from each other. It’s about 10miles roughly. At one time they did play in the same arena but the downtown arena had some issues for hockey and they got a good offer to move to Glendale and then the Suns were sold by Jerry Colangelo to Robert Sarver who refused to go into business with the Yotes when the subject of finally renovating downtown or building a new arena came up. I agree it’s stupid and dumb. Most cities with both NBA and Hockey including Washington DC, Boston, Philly NYC all have shared arenas (the exception being the Nets no longer share with the Islanders who built a new facility to replace Nassau after the team decided playing in Brooklyn just wasn’t going to work).

Problem with the Yotes isn’t lack of support it’s the same damn problem the Capitals had in Dc Metro for years. Shitty arena location making getting to games during the week due to traffic was a nightmare. I know I dealt with it. Going to a Caps game when they were playing near the current FedEx Field where the Redskins/Commanders play it was hell due to traffic. Same issue here. The arena is clear across the west side of the major urban/suburban area when the money and support including most of the snowbirds live in Phoenix and East Valley. They finally build closer to where folks who go live and especially if it’s close to being light rail accessible it’ll be huge. suns and diamondbacks faculties are downtown on the light rail barely two blocks apart. It’s easy in and out.

Explain to me why Circa forces everyone to show ID to enter their establishment but the D and Golden Gate do not?
Is there any other Casino in Vegas forcing scanned ID to enter the buidling?
Are they trying to start a new trend?
Talk about Crumbling Empire with Gestapo Tactics... RIP.

They claim it's a 21 and over place. Although, there might be some kind of laws around that for a hotel, I doubt it. I imagine it really drives away quite a few people.

    I don't understand.
Is the D and Golden Gate not a 21 and over place with hotel rooms?
Are they not all owned by the same entity??
Why is ID only required at Circa and not the other two properties?

I don't believe D and GG are over 21 only, but I'm not sure. At Circa I did ask why they require Id before hotel entry. They said it was so there wouldn't have to be carding anywhere in the casino and especially at the pool area, where they would find it difficult guessing everyone in a bathing suit's age. They do however allow children into Barry's.

    Monkey See, Monkey Do.
I figure this will be the new trend for all Casinos.

    I'm a retard though.
I didn't understand what max was saying till rob chimed in.
For some reason I couldn't understand 21 or older only allowed in the building but the D and Golden Gate will allow minors on the premises.
Just didn't compute because of the change and I suppose what we might be calling the new normal.

They are not over 21. I have seen kids in both. Why people would take their kids downtown is beyond me.
