Thread: Cautionary Tale Fantasy Sports Betting

  1. #1
    It is incredibly difficult to actually win a given FanDuel contest that allows unlimited entries. The single entry contests, despite much smaller prize offerings, are likely the way to go.

    A case in point is my entry in the FanDuel golf contest this weekend. You pick six golfers using a salary cap. I had five golfers make the cut, which hurt, as six is almost a necessity to have a significant cash. Having said that, as of this moment, I have the top three golfers -- Schauffele, Cantlay, and Theegala. That is almost impossible to do. Yet I am sitting in just 132nd place out of roughly 16,000. Because the prize money is ridiculously top loaded, like poker tournaments, I stand to make just four times my entrance fee. I have the top three guys, and my chances of a significant cash are pretty much nil.

    It frames how these fantasy contests are essentially Powerball type lotteries as long as the prize money is skewed in such a top heavy fashion.

    Honestly I thought you would have figured that out years ago. It’s been that way since the start when the smarts figured out how to game the system. What was the stat? 5% winning 95% of the cash or something like that on the daily’s?

    Oh yeah, I know this. I've written about it every year in the blog. I quote some of the exposes in the blog.

    The reason I mentioned this in particular was that it was about as incredible an example as one could ask for. Right now I have the first and second place guys (and really, who has Theegala) and I'm 120th. So that is a hell of an example as to the number of entries being put into play by the big players.

    For the amounts I play, which are tiny, it's semi-educational. I'm actually ahead lifetime at FanDuel now, but the only sports I have a profit are MLB and NFL, and my "being ahead" is less than a thousand dollars.

    Thanks in advance. Ha

    P.S. Oh, gotta love that Red, always with the 132 = 2*66 = (1 + 1)*6*11 ---> 116_611, and, 16,000 = 16*1000 ---> 116 ---> 911 stuff.
    Just in case you decide to delete.
